It follows the manga, all the episodes that followed the manga in the original are just condensed, and every episode past those are new stories if you don't read the manga...

Sorry to revive this, but I'm just about finished with this incredible series. 51 episodes is a daunting task in a week, yet I only have 5 more to go for today.

Anyway, never read the manga or watched the first TV show, however, after hearing a recommendation from somebody, this is a really amazing show. Very dramatic and intense... I swear the story and characters brought out tears from me many more times than once. Sure, sometimes it may be a little cliche, because the protagonist HAS to win (but then again...I'm following watching this after just watching Neon Genesis, and the alternate-ending movie too).

But this is awesome, can't wait to see the end!
