I think they show locations where you can zoom in more than usual.

Here. Actually not *too* far east of the sun-shaped symbol. ^_^

Also note: to the south of the sun-symbol is an airfield that looks somewhat similar to Area 51's.

I found some of those too. I only saw the first image when I did, so I thought they could be nuclear silos but, after seeing the closer images, I have no idea.

Yeah I thought they might have been silos or something too... but seeing them up close, they look more like some factory type thing...
