My mom and I thought about joining an IM service, but they wanted too much personal info from us and wanted to put too many cookies in our computers for comfort. <_< We're perfectly happy using e-mail or the phone.

Who cares about giving the IM people them the *correct* information? :P I use MSN usually, although a few friends are trying to get me converted to Trillian (it combines AIM, IRC, MSN, ICQ, etc). But usually, I'm on IRC channels, so all i really have to give away is my email address. And I rarely check email. /me eyes his 400 new messages... x_x

i prefer instant message systems over phones. silence is more awkward over the phone than online. i use aim and msn. and rarely yahoo.

Yahoo is the best messenger of all really. MSN is unstable and doesn't deliver half of what you type and AIM is just the worst thing after ICQ.
I prefer talking over the phone, it's more personal and you can often hear better by the voice whether a person is joking or not.

I use both AIM and MSN, and about equally as well. I rarely have problems with AIM, but I do seem to have more problems with MSN.

I use MSN, and only MSN. I don't talk on the phone at all anymore, as I'm finding it difficult to speak to people on the phone. *shrug*

Żou do realise that if you're so used to instant messengers that you can't talk to someone on the phone properly that something's wrong and that in fact you're kind of sad?

I use MSN messenger and AOL messenger, but I think they're quite sufficient and so don't use Yahoo Messenger. They're really good because they're free and you can talk within group conversations.

I use AIM and MSN sparsely... I'm with Angelic on this one; you really can't have serious conversations on IM. It's fine for playing around though. I use Jabber at work and IRC to keep in touch with my friends in colorado.

That is very untrue. If anything, you can have even more serious conversations on AIM or MSN. Some of the most serious conversations I have ever had have been on AIM or MSN. With a chat program, you have time to think out what you wish to say, and form the message just how you want. You can take the time to articulate the most understandable message your able to.
On the phone, everything is instant. You cant take your time to think of a good response, you say it right away. Of course, since one can speak faster then he can type, you can discuss things more quickly, but I still prefir a messanger over phone anytime, simply because I am given time to form the best answer I can think of. I can edit and re-edit, delete, and correct over and over till I am satisfied. On the phone, if you say something you didnt mean to, you cant take it back.
Note this doesnt mean I am unable to talk on the phone, or that I dont enjoy conversations on the phone, just that I dont prefir the phone.

i have my best conversaitions on MSN, because the phone calls are usually full of silence and cost heaps

Oh, I forgot to mention, if you need to use the restroom or something, you can just type in a quick "brb, restroom", while on the phone, you typically need to end the conversation and say good bye. Well, unless you use the restroom while on the phone, and I would hope that most of you dont do that.
Everytime you call someone, it costs you money. Everytime you message someone, it is free. You can do it as many times as you want, for as long as you want. I mean to say that Internet isnt free, but using MSN or AIM under the Internet does not build up charges.

Angelic, I think you owe Chi-Chi an apology. She doesn't dare speak up against you, so I'm intervening on her behalf. And it's just that we found your comment to be slightly offensive, even if it wasn't meant to be. There was no need for you to be so straight-forward about her problem, especially when she hasn't done anything wrong and broken any rules, and especially when you don't know everything about her life and situation.
~~
For me to stay on topic: I use msn and aim. I have lots of cousins in the states, otherwise I would just stick to msn.

If she has a problem with it she can contact me over PM about it. You're the last person on this forum who I'll listen to when being asked for an apology.

I prefer it too, but not for that.. I like MSN better because I'm a lot less confident for some reason, in speaking to people....... o_o

Yeah - not to mention that when you're on MSN you have a bit more time to think about what you're saying, which makes it a lot easier to converse without making yourself look like a complete prat. Happens to me from time to time but much less often than it does when I'm talking to people in real life. I hate that - I'll say something and people will give me an odd look or go all quiet and I'll feel really embarrassed. At least on MSN I don't have to worry about that so much :\

Yes, that's part of the reason I prefer MSN, it is awful when people suddenly stop speaking and raise their eyebrows at you. -_-

Indeed. So therefore it's not a matter of being so used to IM that one is incapable of conversing on the phone - it's more a matter of never being comfortable on the phone or in company in the first place and IMing opening up easier avenues of communication. Doesn't mean you stop using the phone, or chatting to a group of friends down at the cinema, it just helps improve your confidence a bit and reduces the number of opportunities you get to make an idiot of yourself ;)

I have problems like that too...
Im a very fast speaker, and people will rarely understan me, but on the internet, you cant tell if im a faster talker or a slow one :P
Also, in MSN and things like that, you can spell things wrong, and people wont care unless its so bad no one can read it. In real life, people will be life people will pause and
poke at the one letter you forgot to say.

A few years ago, I had a problem with people not being able to find people who could type as fast as I could (In places such as Yahoo Chat, etc). But now i am finding that is less of a problem when I talk to people using on IRC. Those who use IRC tend to use the computer far more often than public opinion dictates. And friends made from there usually make it to my MSN buddy list.

Yeah, that happens to me sometimes too.. helps when you can think things out before "saying" them. I still prefer phone or facetime when I'm having a conversation with someone I really care about though.

I use my mobile far too much. I rack up £100+ phone bills every month, and I got a contract too. £30, 1000 mins x net calls and 300 texts. Thank god for student loans B)
I rarely come on MSN messenger anymore. I'm probably not very interesting on it.
Edit: No wait, it's actually 500 x net and 150 texts. Bloody 6 month arrangement..
