So I've recently formatted my computer and installed Windows 98(again) and I'm having massive issues with my computer crashing... I've been told to format it and install the other Windows 98 disc in the house (which is apparently newer... ) thing is though, as they're both INSTALLATION discs (and not upgrade) My only option seems to be formatting the computer and installing the newer Windows 98 disc... thing is, how do I uninstall Windows 98 (that I have now) so I can actually install the newer version? It says you can do it in the startup disk, but when I try to, the EXE doesn't show up... Help? @_@

So can't you just format the hard disc from the installation screen?

you hav eot boot from the CD and you should be able to wipe the HD from there.

You've got it all wrong...

Problem:
My computer keeps crashing

Possible cause:
Wrong 'version' of Windows 98

Wanted Solution:
Uninstall old version and use 'newer' version...

It helps to be simple :heh:

You could try renaming the "win.com" to "win.old" (use MS-DOS mode for this) and then try to install the other Windows 98 CD.

There are two versions of 98 btw, the regular one (which is crap) and Windows 98 SE (Second Edition) which is pretty good (in fact, the best in the 9x series).

Of course, if possible you should install Windows 2000. Check if your computer has at least a Pentium 200 CPU and 128 MB of RAM. If yes, try to install Windows 2000, it's like a thousand times better than 98.

Problem with SE: Don't have the disc

Problem with 2000: See above

So... yeah, stuck with 98 Regular -_-;

But I've had to format... lock please

There's no use replacing Windows 98 with another copy of Windows 98 oO; The only newer 98 version is SE, other than that there is no new 98 version.

Well, its simple really. You need a bootable 98 disc. When your computer is starting, have the bootable disc in when it attempts to boot from disc. When 98 is beginning to install, first it will load the files it needs to install. Then, it will give you a list of your particions (yeah, that's spelt wrong). You highlight the particion that is your C drive (Local Disc C: so and so MBs). Hit enter. This will take you to a blue screen, telling you its fat32 format, then asks you what to do. Select "Format with Fat32". Then this will reformat the drive, then directly after, install 98! Trust me, i worked on a P.o.S. 98 for 6 years.

Contact me if it doesn't work.

You're describing the Windows 2000/XP installation program though. Windows 98 uses Fdisk and the Format command

Don't even try Linux, you wouldn't be able to work with it if you can't even fix up Windows 98.

linux... *shudder* as far as i'm concerned, it can stay with managing servers. thats what its good for. for compatibility, can't go too far past windows, or even mac.
