You are a very talented composer, that you are.
For Fantasia Presto, I'll give you 10 out of 10 (10 being good)
Reason why? The song is beautiful, it really is, but it tends to get a little repetitve. But repetitive can be a good thing. :D
Tango Waltz, 9/10 should do it. Nicely written, has a very nice flow to it, but, it was all nice in the begginning and suddenly these chords come out
(excuse me if my piano theory is wrong, i've never learned it...) and it disrupts the nice flowy thing you had going there. All in all, very nice piece. 8)
Keep up the good work BlackMage!
(p.s sorry if I was a little too critic.....I can get that way sometimes.... )

Lol, it's OK Shani-chan. Sorry, I should have talked you through my compositions a little more,
Fantasia Presto:
The reason it's repetetive is because the chord changes take care of complimenting the repeating. The broken 'horror' chord that occasionly comes in is a sort of shock to the melody. I thought it made it sound different.
Tango Waltz:
The reason the change was made was to make it a Waltz, hense the title.
Anway Shani-Chan, thankyou very much for the kind compliments! :)

I liked the Waltz over Presto. I what one me over was the beginning of each song. The Waltz just really appealed to me. Go over to the Composition Review thread and post more! Oh ya, 7/10 for both. Sorry, I'm harsh. No one usually gets above 6 for me, so I REALLY thought yours was good!

Thankyou very much, I am not that much of an expert since I have been playing piano, infact playing music full stop, only less than a year. I have only been composing about 6 months so and I composed that three months ago so I suppose I was sort of an amature. Don't worry though! I have a symphony coming soon!

I'll be waiting to hear it! Post more of your compositions if you have anymore, and review mine!

The quality of the music is there but their is not much change in motion if you understand where I'm coming from. It might just be that because its a MIDI but it lacks the piano feel. 8/7 says my instructor and I agree. I too am a tough grader, though I could not compose somthing this good.

Thanks Mies, but I don't understand why you wanted a change, both compositions are classical in a way and are aimed purely for general background music.

EDIT: Sorry for the double post, I thought my original post hadn't made it through, sorry again.

hey,
this is my first post so here it goes...:
great job on both songs! great sound, good feel...
just some constructive comments: its would be nice if you can at a point slow the tempo down and make it dramatic... (but that's just me... would be cool)
this song reminds me of the black and white movies when ppl don't talk, all movement...
keep it up!
out of 10, i'll give it an 8.5
the waltz sounds really good! that's all i can say about it.... 9/10
keep up the composing!

Nice pieces! They are really something. I favor the Presto over the Waltz. I couldn't grab the beat in the waltz as well as I could in the Presto.
The Presto had a nice transition from one scale(key, chord, whatever) to the other. It reminded me of C.P.E Bach's Solfigetto. I give this one a 9 out of 10.
The Waltz was nice in the fast of the changing left hand. It keeps listeners on their toes. It was a short, sweet, and simple tune. Those can be the best tunes because the melody isn't covered up by complexities. I give this one an 8 out of 10.
I would sugest that you give each some cresendos and decresendos for a more dramatic flair, but if I'm not mistaken you said that it was aimed toward backround music.

Thanks again for those comments.
Sondagger:
Yeah, background music is what I wanted to achieve but I am using a free demo of Finale notepad 2003a as my other computer has the payed for version and I lost the disk and my password :(. So the free version dosn't have many of the dynamics so I can't use them.

wow you are really good at composing blackmage I give both your pieces a 10/10 because I didn't find any flaws
whenever I try to compose stuff there are always gaps and it sounds like I have 2 endings and stuff (I guess I have no talent, I have no creativity)

Hey! umm... You've been playing piano for that many years.. wow! i wonder if you could play some of my compositions.
BlackMage

The best way to start composing is to....
[1] Choose your theme, for example, romance or baroque.
[2] Choose a composer you would like to study, my one was Chopin
[3] Play some of his/her works - what I did.
[4] Have a go at composing.
Try doing those four steps, then you might get the hang of it :).

yeah that's a way to do it but i find that really hard because it's not simple... I've been studying some peices of Mozart and Bach ( my two fav composers) and it's hard to like to grasp techninques from them

first off
BLack MaGe your my hero!
kenny- another way you can do is sit down on the piano, play a little diddily (like 4 bars of something...) and work around that 4 bars of music you thought of. my first song, the first part i wrote was actually a little bit in from the beginning. just work around and see what parts you like and don't like. you'll be aight. Ok, thanks Archangel! And Kenny, the thing you must remember with Bach is it's almost like his music goes up in little steps. With Chopin, I realized that his music goes in leeps alot of the time and can either have a very quick, fast movemant or be very slow.
A few things to remember with Bach and Mozzart -
Bach:
[1]Bach's music didn't end after his death, his sons continued his ambition and created some fine music as well.
[2]Bach loved streams, which is quite ironic as Bach is German for stream, anyway, the fact that he loved streems is because it was like his music, moderatly flowing and beautiful.
[3]Bach's music was supposed to make you feel good and I think you'll agree that it does.
So try and go by a few of those things, try to make people feel good with your music, choose something that you would like to base your music around and grow an ambition - with out this ambition, your going to find it hard.
Mozzart:
[1]Mozzart uses a variety of interesting dynamics which makes his music seem very interesting.
[2]Mozzart loved his grace notes!
[3]Mozzart music was at times like Bach's, flowing, but he sometimes defied this and went for an exciting key varied piece - an example of the is Rondo Alla Turca (if you want to study Mozzart, this piece is a must!)
So, with Mozzart, remember the you have a connection with the piano, your both sitting there to fill the same purpous, make some beautiful music.
Go for it! I know you can do it! Good luck :).

Hah, only just gotten round to listening some people's work. These are some good compositions Blackmage. I don't think I could pick a favourite. Each of them has strengths that other doesn't have so much.
Presto: 7.5/10
Good chord progressions here. There is an obvious classical influence. But this sounds more like some sort of study to me. It might just be the recording, but it there was some melody going on over the top, I didn't catch it. Also, I did find it slightly lacked in direction in places, and the intro and ending were both quite sudden. But it's quite good though, sort of hypnotic in a way.
Tango: 8/10
The intro seemed a bit out of place, I personally found it hard to find the pulse. But when the central waltz part took over, that was quite nice. You used some chords and notes which are found in tango, which is good too. Too bad it couldn't have been longer. ^_^
Gosh, I'm such a critic.

thanks both :) for the advice but theres only one problem ... i don't play piano i don't even have one... but i play violin. There is allot of the music from anyone that are made for piano but it's the same note for violin so i can still make a bit off my violin but the thing that currupts me allot is the bass... i don't have it and some song aren't really like the same like take kaze no fantasia from record of lodoss war in ichigo's anime music thing... it's for 2 violin a viola and cello. I can play it very well but with out the cello and viola it doesn't sound the same and even the violin #2 has diffrent parts and at times it has the melodie so i need both violin 1 and 2 then i switch sheets as I play... lol sounds pathetic indeed but if i only play violin one or two the song isn't very much beautiful.
I very much want to learn piano... but right now i have school :( and i dont have much time to get lessons but i want to play it and i will soon i hope. oh and y the way can some of you people go in my message that i recently done and download fire and wind element in .mus form and listen to them and give me advice or coments thank you :)

I really enjoyed both pieces, Black Mage.
I think I liked the waltz just a slight bit more, but that's probably because it reminds me of the grace I'll never have. :heh:
9.5/10 and 10/10, very well done on both of them.
~Blessed be~

This Fantasia Presto piece hooked me up immediately, such great work.. Just wondering, can you play this on the piano? I'd really want to hear a recording. It reminds me of Moonlight Sonata, 3rd Movement. Not meant as a negative.
BlackMage
May 31st, 2004, 05:13 am
Thanks for the kind comments Noir7, yeah, I can play it. The strange thing is I can always manage to play harder pieces if they're my own! And I must say, it reminds even me at times of Moonlight Sonata: Presto Agitato, but I think that's mainly because my composition is in presto too!

Yeah hard pieces are easier to play if they are your own work, hehe. Thing is, I can't play any of my own compositions... just the melodic parts. Anyway, Fantasia Presto is great, and I noticed that you rock in writing compositions like that. I really like "presto" piano pieces nowadays, and I hope I can compose something like that soon. The only "fast" piano piece I've composed is Piano Phantaise III, found in my other topic, but it's not even close to yours ^^

Here's a new one called Fantasia...I couldn't think of a proper name for this one lol. It's very short, it's simply a little interlude.

June 5th, 2004, 04:48 pm
How about calling it fantasia interlude? XD
Anyways, is it just me (and my browser), or did you only put up 4 seconds of the piece? . . . probably my internet browser, hehe. Nothing I can do to fix it . . . so all I'll say is that the 4 seconds of arpeggio were nice. ^_^
