Composition Contest - Summer '07
Yes, I know I have been inactive and such... but, well, I don't have any excuse for that =P You'll simply have to bear with me. Anyway, this contest is going to be a little different from the others. There's no solid theme to follow, but rather your interpretation of an artist's work. Attached with this post is the .ZIP file containing the Four paintings/photographs which you can choose from, and then compose music for.
It's not necessary to compose to a certain scenery shown in any of the images, you're free to analyse them and pick out a mood, feeling, theme or expression. For example, if you're looking at a painting with a stormy sea and a grand castle by its shoreline, the composer could either compose a more cinematic piece of music which would fit the events of the picture, or a theme or detail which the picture expresses, such as anger, or remorse.
RULES % Guidelines
* You're only allowed to choose between the four attached paintings/photos.
* When submitting, you must clearly state which of the four pictures you have chosen!.
- A dog.
- Dream Coast
- Friend
- Snowing in the Summer
* Brief commentry/composer's explanation is not required, but merited.
* There are no specific genre/lenght/instrumentation requirements.
* The voting will most likely be made publically by the members of Ichigos.
* The last day to submit: August 17:th (GMT+1 Sweden)
* Anything I'll think of later.
Good Luck and Have Fun!

Very cool idea and the pics are very nice. But is the last picture really "Snowing in the Summer"? For me it looks like a winter forest in the evening:P:heh:.

Alright! Glad you posted this Noir, I am very fond of the pictures; all of them are kinda hard to choose from, but they all are very inspiring so good job.
And thanks for the deadline; it's really quite long from the last few contest, which were only a little under a month.

When we vote, are we voting for one winner per painting, one winner overall or one winner overall the winners per painting? o.o;

@marty-Kun: Yes
@ajamesu: One winner overall, I posted different pictures just so you'll have more to choose from.
@pianoman: That's simply the artist's title for the painting.

Is there any limit on file type (can we post a live recording rather then MIDI and then maybe sheet music separately), etc
Milchh

Any file-type is allowed, just remember to use a more universial file for people to view your music. This would consist of MIDI, .mp3, .wma. Try not to use .MUS and .sib files, or any other files in which you need a *certain* program to open them.

What Mazeppa said. To add to that, if you're performing it live, be sure to credit any people other than you performing (instruments, lyrics, singing...)

I'm changing the deadline of the competition from August 21 to August 17. This is because I will not be able to handle the voting-thread and such at the first set date. Considering the amount of time given, I didn't want to postpone it further, since a month's time should suffice.

Alright, so do we need to say that we are composing for the composition, or just submit when we are done?

Right, i am away for the deadline so im uploading my composition now.
I chose the picture 'Dream Coast' and called this composition the same thing.
I began by considering the idea of a dream; mainly how they dont follow any laws- i.e. in a dream anything can happen. there is no time, there is no real structure, there is no particular theme as such- just recurring random ideas that the brain creates when we are unconscious.
I then thought how i could show this through music; obviously all music needs some kind of structure so i thought about giving it that through Leitmotivs. For those of you who dont know, a Leitmotif is a recurring musical idea that reflects an idea.
There are five motifs in this piece, based on the picture 'Dream Coast'. These are (in order of appearance): Moon, Ocean/Waves, Mountain/Sky, Dream, Stars. They appear in various combinations, building on top of each other until a climax is reached where the dream world created at the beginning collapses around the listener.
I think thats all i have to say on the background of the piece. For various reasons i havent been able to do an mp3 which is a shame because MIDIs dont do it justice. There will be an mp3 eventually but sadly not until after this contest.
Here are MIDI samples of the 5 leitmotivs:

My entry
Well I originally began writing this piece while looking at the Snowing in the Summer Picture and it was intended to be an entry so here it is. Don't ask my why but the picture just screamed the title of the piece at me after I re-examined it.
Composition: Serenity
Composer: Inuyasha_1052
Nothing ventured nothing gained I suppose. :heh:
