I remember seeing a thread about this before but it's undoubtedly several months old by now, and I can't find it anyway.

Actually, is there a way to change the instrument track on a stave in the middle of a piece, such as for a percussion part that uses multiple instruments? I've seen this done before on a .mus file, but I'm not sure how it's done on Printmusic.

If there are any other Printmusic users who want to put questions or comments here, be my guest. ^.^

You'd need Finale for that, but all Printmusic can do, if you add the instrument "Percussion", drag the note to get other sounds.

I've figured that out already, but I'm needing to change from chimes to vibraphone to marimba on the same part. I'm guessing that's not possible.

You would have to make 2 staves, "Chimes", "Mallet Percussion". When that percussionist plays chimes, just write "Percussion (#)" on top of that part. For vibraphone and marimba, just write "Percussion (#)" and which instrument on the Mallet Percussion staff.

Hmmm... I know there's a way to add a new stave after a piece has been created, but it escapes me. :heh:

Really, I just needed to know if it was possible for playback issues. It looks fine all on one part, but the playback is stuck on 'Percussion'. With a constant vibraphone part being played, you can imagine what that sounds like. <_<

Once I figure out how, I think I'll mute the Percussion track and set up the extra Vibe track to see how it sounds, but I won't leave it on there, just for convenience's sake.

To create a new staff after you created a piece, click the tool that has the treble clef with lines. You'll see a "Staff" toolbar come up. The rest is self-explanatory.

To mute the percussion track (this is if you want it muted throughout the whole song, not just for a few measures, because Printmusic can't do the few measures), click Window> Instrument List. Right next to "Percussion", look for a "M" toward the top. Click the square between those.

Well, I finally figured it out, four months after the fact. -_- I can apparently set different instruments to different layers on the Instrument List screen.

Hi,
I might be a complete fool, but I think Print Music (and Mac computers in general) are incredibly counter-intuitive. But just regarding the Print Music software I recently and very reluctantly shelled out $100 on, I've spent an hour now trying to find the answer to my question through the help menu which is completely useless. Please, someone tell me how to have two notes on top of one another which have different rhythmic value, ie., how to I have a 1/4 note kickdrum beat beneath an 1/8 note snare hit. Likewise, if writing guitar music, how to I have a note held while other notes are played over. I am desperate to know this.
Thanks!
BG
PS: I'm using a Mac Book Pro if you couldn't tell.

I don't have Print Music but the options should be the same as Finale version. You just go to: view>select layer. There you have options to move from layer to layer.
