i got motivated because i saw a friend of mine play Fur Elise. At the time I thought that was cool and now, years later, i found better songs to keep me motivated.
Although i haven't been motivated lately <_< the songs i found are too advanced for me...i have to learn how to sight read better first....

ah well. back to the basics!

EdiT: o yea! please tell what instument you play for readers to understand a little better. and i play piano.

I heard nice songs on violin and flute, so I was motivated to learn them. But I only ended up getting the violin, but I don't know why I didn't get the flute as well, hehe. My motivation didn't last long, because soon after the strings broke, I stopped playing.

piano...um...never actually got motivated to play piano, i was forced to play piano when i was five. But now i really like it, lots of pieces motivate me to play piano more and more.

i heard a lot of violin concertos, i really want to play violin. but since we have economical issues...really don't have money to take violin lesson.

*Trumpet*

I'm motivated by my desire to become a better player, though it wasn't that way from the begining (sp?)... I many did it for longevity and the experence then it moved to desire..

saxaphone/flute/piano

sax:...motivation probably came from the simpsons lol ( i live in a family of 5 2 girls and one older bro...and i am the middle child like lisa lol :heh: ) but they had me start on clairinet first...

flute: this was the instrument that i was originally going for but i thought that since its off to the side it would be hard to learn the fingerings lol...then one day my friend let me try hers and...i really just liked to play it (that sounds nerdy lol)

piano:...my parents bought me a piano when i was like 6...but i never used it. and then...i found THIS website! :D plus i had just gotten into anime and i was like "woah they have coOl songs for the piano! i wanna play piano now" lol :sweatdrop:

Bass guitar: im motivated by my band, and by college to keep progressing. im always finding new ways to play

Guitar: im motivated to play guitar because playing solos etc helps my fingers get more dexterous for bass and piano

Drums: im motivated by my side-project band, which i play drums for, and also because its so damn fun to hit stuff and make a loud sound lol

Piano: just started learning this, and im motivated by my love for the instrument and because i want to broaden my musical mind. if that makes any sense at all.
plus i love FF music lol

I play the piano when I hear a good song from a good anime, or think I have a great composition. Usually, though, it comes from inspiration from an anime or game. Same goes for trumpet.

Every time I go see live jazz I can't stop playing constantly for at least a week after that. Other than that I just leave my instrument set up most of the time so I can't forget about it. It's far easier to just sit down and play the piano anytime though.

As for what got me started in music, Band was an easier class to take then the alternative and I already had a Clarinet lying around.

I play piano, bassoon, percussion, and a bit of sax. I'm motivated to keep learning my instruments and new one in hopes of a carreer in music. Plus it's just fun. I mean learning new songs and the different sound that each instrument has, it's so exilirating. And I like the challenge.

My parents bought a keyboard when a was about 7 years. My mother showed me where the C was on the notes and I learned to read notes by myself with a number system where C was 1. But I could just play very easy melodies and somehow I didn't want to take lessons. But when I was 13 I began take lessons from a private teacher and I though it was very fun so one year later I began with electric guitar. And now I'm 15.

But that was not really the answer of the question. What motivates me? Just hearing a piano peace or a guitar solo and seeing for my self how the fingers play over the piano or the guitar.

Hehe, I learned piano to piss my brother off because he'd just started playing the keyboard in music at school - I was two years younger than him and I could play his pieces better ;) I wanted to learn the violin because I was growing to loathe my piano lessons (nice teacher leaves to be replaced by evil teacher type story) and I really love the sound that the violin makes - I'm a total junkie for violin pieces, especially from animes because apart from classical you don't really get all that much contemporary music that uses the violin :) The Japanese know how to use strings to great effect!

I'm motivated to play the clarinet because it's giving me a chance to get into CODA band. Originally, I didn't have much good reason to play, but now I love music and so I play clarinet for that reason. Also two of my report card grades depend on me playing music.

Hmm... I guess I was motivated to play Piano and Flute, both because my sister had played them, and I wanted to, too.

I think she was mad that I wanted to play, too, but I was little when I started, so I don't remember her reaction. To me, it seemed only natural that I should play the piano when I was old enough, and then the flute, when I was able to take band.

I hate the flute though, because I'm not as good as everyone else in the band. They all look at me like I'm a loser who's musically challenged. *sigh* If only they could see me play Chopin on the piano, they'd know I wasn't a total idiot...

As for currently, whenver I have nothing to do, I fall back on the piano, and I practice. So... boredom is a motivator? So is anger. Nothing like banging out the notes to Beethoven's fifth, right? XD

Yeah, it was like that for me in the orchestra - my violin-playing isn't that advanced and I spend most of the time sitting there staring at the music (my sight-reading sucks majorly and the evil psycho director won't let anyone take them home so I can't practise) or playing duff notes. It's embarrassing but on the bright side I'm only public enemy number two - it's the trumpet section that get all the evil glares because fortissimo is their only dynamic! ;)

What gets me motivated? Playing. XD Which is actually the problem. =/ I love playing, but I hate starting... so it works in a circle. XD Unless if I start, I can't love it, so I won't play. >.> I'm so weird.

Listening to orchestral pieces too. <3 'Specially the violin. Mwahhaa. I'm a violinst so I'm a sucker for orchestral pieces.

Piano/Clarinet

Well, I started with piano when I was 5. Its been 7 years since then. Piano is okay-ish. Then, I started with clarinet, and now my friend and I are really good at it. Sometimes I just get so bored, I take FFX or FFVIII piano music, transcribe into one melody, and play it on the clarinet. Sax is pretty good too, but...I'm sticking with clarinet for now. Sax comes in a couple of years or so.

I love music. Can't stand a day without listening to music even in the office. :P

Especially when I listen to piano music, my finger will be itching to touch the piano. Just like that. :/
I started learning piano when I was 5 years old. Stop at Grade 8. :( When I was like 18 yrs old, I picked up violin from the school club. But found that i dun have the stamina to hold the violin for long. Sigh.... Stopped violin too and sticked with practising on my piano since then.

I finally have a reason to teach myself piano: rivalry. I'm tired of listening to my friend say piano is better. That's my major motivation, although my minor one is that it'll make me a better musician, and I'll have bragging rights.

irrelevant: Do you see the semi-pun in there?

not really.... I think you'll find that piano is fun. I assume you already know how to read music?

I was inspired to play the piano through the songs of final fantasy
*hoping this member wont get to much of a big head* but noir7s music also inspires me.

Im learning some fairly advanced songs at the moment.........sehiroths theme being 1 of them.... @_@

well if the performance forum gets the all clear and goes up i'll show you what i can do and it will be a pleasure to hear the talent of all of you ^_^

Yes I do already know how to read music. I play clarinet. Anyways, the pun was major and minor. Heh, if I can learn Every Heart on piano by 9th grade, I'll have accomplished my original piano mission. Hehe, I'll get to rub it in my friend's face that I could do what she couldn't. O.o I like bragging too much. Yeah, basically bragging rights is why. I'd also like to hear a lot of songs so I can get better at composing.

My sister started playing piano when I was four. Well, I couldn't let her be better than me, so the next year I started taking lessons. I've been playing ever since --nine years. I love it. Whenever I'm bored or I have a mood swing, I'm just like, 'must play piano' so I go down and play (depending on my mood) an InuYasha song or a minuet in a minor key.

I play the violin, and a little bit of the keyboard/piano.

I started playing the violin in 5th grade. I really just wanted to be in a class with my friend, but I ended up liking the violin! ^.^ I have been playing the violin for four years now! I play a little bit of the keyboard/piano (er...either one.) because my mom wanted me to play it. I started practicing last year, but I haven't practiced much. It is a lot easier to read piano notes when you have been taking violin lessons for four years! :heh: I have stopped playing the violin, though. I only play my keyboard when I'm really bored, and it's usually Every Heart, from the Inuyasha ending theme. I am thinking of what other instrument I can play. I would definitly play the harp, but it was around $3,000! Does anybody got any suggestions about what instruments are fun and pretty easy to play?

I saw Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon in theaters and thought the music was divine. I listened to some more Yo-Yo-Ma and heard this guy play cello at my church. Then I had to do it.
Piano, I just kind of started playing it. So my parents got me a keyboard and lessons.
Organ, our church got a new one and they wanted me to play on it during a special performace; I totally fell in love with it. I checked out a million books on it and am pretty much self taught.

I play the piano. I started playing about 3 years ago because we finally found a affordable teacher (5$ a half hour! can you belive that?!?!) . Anyways My motivation to play is either being very bored or emotional (sounds kinda stupid coming from a guy). If something is weighing on my mind i play a song that can correspond to it. Or I learn a song that conveys my soul.... ya i know i sound like i am joking, but i kid you not.... Of course this is a big problem for me since i am taking classes. If I have a non-emotional but non boring week my teacher hears it monday morning. that and i can't play happy-go-lucky songs or march songs easily. It takes me forever to learn them...

PS has anyone ever noticed the simple healing qualities of "the song of healing" from The Legend of Zelda : Majora's Mask? I learned that 6 months after starting piano for my first recital and it has probably been my most helpful song i have learned (lol i play that when life is just ticking me off XD)

I was kinda forced, well not forced- edged towards playing the flute because my mum's friend was just starting to teach it and needed customers- but now i don't regret learning it a bit! At my high school, part of the music course in the second year (when i was about 12/13) was learning the keyboard- so i decided to take keyboard lessons so that when we started on keyboards at school, i would be at an advantage. Then I played "Golliwogg's Cakewalk" for my Grade 5 keyboard exam- got a Debussy CD out from the library to see how it sounds, heard "Clair de Lune" on there and decided to teach it to myself on the piano (i'm a very impulsive person). When I could play Clair de Lune without even having lessons, everyone started nagging me to learn the piano 'properly' so i did. But I still learn pieces a lot better if i work them out for myself

Motivation. Now THERE'S something I need!!

Yeah, I tend to be a slacker with my clarinet, often for the reason that what we play in our school band is easy so I don't need to practice much to get it right. Annoyance is what REALLY motivates me. If I keep stuffing something up that I KNOW I can play, then I will practice that over and over until I get it right. Same goes if someone is going on about how well they can play something. I'll practice it til it's better than them, just to prove that anyone can do it if they try.

Keyboard I just play if I'm bored. I'm not serious about it, and can't play very much on it. So the only time I'n motivated to play it is if I hear something on tv or whatever and really wanna figure out how to play it myself
