Yay! This semester we have four saxophones total. Three of them are altos, and one's a bari. We have some variety now!
We only have four bassoons, now, though. (should I even be saying only?) It just means I'll only have one other person playing second part with me.:P

We finally have an oboe player in our band. :) And we're having someone play bass saxophone soon...
-------
And today, even though it's a Saturday, I have to go to school to rehearse for some state contest (MSHSL) xP ... hopefully, I'll make it past the school level...

I play oboe for concert band but, my instructor told me to play the English Horn for two pieces we're playing for a competition (Fiddle Tunes (Lovely Nancy and Hay Makers) by James Curnow, and Symphonic Prelude by Mark Camphouse). I'm so excited.
I need a bit of advice for the notes. I'm not sure which note is my tunning note.
My instructor said the English Horn is the 4th below the scale. I'm not too sure what that means.

It's not a fourth down. It's a fifth down. English horns are instruments pitched in F, hence if you tune to Bb, you'll play F and if you tune to A, it'll be E for English horn.
~~
Playing English horn is very benificial for oboe playing as it makes you breathe, like mad.

Thanks for the help, Dotdot!
Yeah it does require a crazy amount of air. It took like an hour to get the air flow for the English horn right. But I'm so excited to play it.
Does that mean, if we tune to F, then I play a Bb?

No, if you tune to F, you play C.

*Bump!*
So, what are all you fellow woodwind players up to at the moment? My band started again last week, and I definitely didn't practice enough over the holidays - I got lazy. But now my mouth and my fingers are paying for it XD I'll have to get into practice again - we're going on tour later this year, so we need to get our standards up up UP!

My band is also going on tour this year (and, ironically, we're not the top band, yet we play better than they do (not my personal opinion, but that's what many say)). I also made it to a state contest on the 23rd. :) Hoping to get a state letter-of-recommendation there.

I haven't been online that much... I mostly been practising. Trying to improve as much as possible my last one and a half year I got left at the music school. And also... It seems I've got asthma, which I seem to have had all my life, and because I start to have problems I try to practise so that it will go away again.
I wonder if it will work... or make it worse.
Anyway, I have mostly been practising, as I already wrote, and then done some schoolwork, when I felt like doing any.

Playing will definitely improve your asthma as long as you stop if you feel like you're going to have an attack - the breathing improves your general breathing, and your ability to hold air in your lungs as well. I only have mild asthma, but since I started playing, I've only had a couple of mild attacks, and I don't get anywhere near as short of breath as I used to.

I play the oboe. I play in my school's wind ensemble and in two youth symphonies. Most of the music we're playing is fun. I really enjoy playing.
Also, my school Solo & Ensemble festival is tomorrow. I'm really nervous.

today i went to a music competition! it was in a place called Le Parc. we were competing in the 300s level. we started with a chorale and my band played three pieces: Mid West 50, Ammerland, and Mazama. the first two songs were gold for sure! not even joking. but then when we got to the third song, the timing got screwed up at one part and it was a train wreck. (as my conductor said) arghh, i'm so mad we couldnt play it properly. we could've done so much better. >.< i never tried so hard to count in my life. and look at my conductor. lollll..but seriously...i was thrown off and all, so it was really hard to focus. We got a silver plus though, so i guess it's better than silver. ahha.
the guy that did our little clinic said that our dynamics were good and that the whole band was moving to the music. kinda scary haha.
