Hmmm been a while since 2004 but I know what it is. Its a famous classical piece called Jesus Bleibet Meine Freude. Its on the End of Evangelion album cd.

If anyone would know where to get the Violoncello Solo that plays at the beginning of Death and Rebirth title screen, i would like to know. It's Johann Sebastian Bach's Suiten fur Violoncello solo Nr. 1 incase anyone's wondering. Im not sure if your requests area allowed within the rules. Yes, the music was on an anime, but its not original music, its famous classical music, somthing that isnt that hard to find if you just use google.

But if you can't find any anime music here, you definitely won't find it there. But it's a good site for anything other than anime like classical and contemporary, which is what Suiten fur Violoncello solo Nr. 1 falls under.
