Its a few weeks old now, but if you were ever thinking of more than just making midi's there was vocaloid. (... well vocaloid was kinda still in the make-computer-sing-but-doesn't-sound-as-real realm) and yamaha recently released vocaloid 2, and its first vocal pattern, dubbed Miku.

Hatsune Miku (http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/clips/vocaloid-2-the-japanese-anime-song-generator-300318.php)

Yes the non-japansese speakers of the forum (..which is most of you) won't be able to obtain this for a while (.. at 15700 yen the price isn't easy either)

But if you're willing to prop up $200 or so for your favorite pastime(or academic skills), Hey you've seen what it can do in the above linked article
I've worked with it personally, and its like magic.. you can almost use this for voice acting.

Maybe we'll get the ones capable of American accent and demo's might become availuable soon. But at the least we can all watch and drool yes?

Edit: Well since Miku can only sing in Japanese you would doubt she'd be good at singing anything else.. but then
Ievan Polka (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lG_kz6Sp500&mode=related&search=)

She can even sing in finnish

Vocaloid 2 is an amazing program. It would most definitely be worth the money when it become available in the US. It can speak "Engersh" from what I've seen. But to get it to sound more human will require a lot of work. Some of the clips I've seen are better than others.

But I want it!!!!!

I have one vocaloid called Miriam, it sounds ok but you can notice is a synthetic voice. I think if you do somethings you can make it sound better. Btw I am new with the software so I don't know much.

Better to get a woman or a man to sing or do the back-up vocals haha.

Just wait for Garritan Choir if you want voices that sing romantic languages. Or if not, get symphonic choir from EWQL.
