How did you end up a being a massive fan of anime/manga? Why?

They're more massively funny then regular american cartoons (most). And they usually have such a great storyline.

EDIT: AND! I take that back. This thread is slightly different from the one earlier. Enough to allow it to live.

<hr />

I'd have to say the deeply enriching storylines were very refreshing to me. Add in the fact that a good part of anime is science fiction related; and you have me sold. I've slowly shifted over to more of a romance anime person, but this does not change the fact that the stories are excellent.

I was very young. It was late at night when I was flicking through the channels, suddenly I saw a cartoon with big robots and guns. After that I stayed up until 4am each saturday to watch these cartoons until one day they vanished. They returned at a later date buton thursdays and by this point i'd seen them all. I saw some good classics such as dominom(sp?) tank police and Evangelion.

I started with the basic series... DBZ, Pokemon, but at this point, I still called them "Chinese stuff" and thought it was just like american... But a few years later I tried to stay with my big bro when he watched Evangelion, Hunter X Hunter... But I just could stay 5 mins (or less) before he started shouting "Get the fuck outta here" and he kept saying me "You're too young for these stuff". But At high school I started taking his DVD's and watching them, so... I've been almost following his shadow, but lately I've started downloading and buying my own DVD's and going to convs...
Anyway, the option "My fucking mean brother got me in" isn't there, so I chose "It's just funny".

It all started with Pokemon, at first I thought it was an american cartoon. But then I got into;
Sailor Moon, Yugioh,[kids stuff] and then I turned 12 and started watching. Inuyasha, Cowboy Bepop, Evangelion, Noir, Read or Die, Ramna 1/2, CCS.ectectect....
It's kinda sad, cuz I didn't realize what anime was until I was 13!
But you know, It's just the story lines. It amazes me of how creative and interesting anime can be. It just gets me really into it. I'll be honest with you guys. I've never cried while watching a movie or soap opera, but with anime I've had. It's just amazing, everything about anime is. =]
that's why i like it alot.

For me, I'd have to say Pokemon started it all as it appealed to many young people, Then as I found that there are heaps other better anime out there, I gradually developed a liking to anime. But Animation and the beautiful drawings and art is the key. eg Kanon (2006), CLANNAD etc.:lol:

What made me start being a fan of manga/anime when I hate western comics really much? Well, obviously the deep storylines.
How did I get into manga/anime? Like every kid in my town I watched alot of TV in my childhood days and there were digimon, pokemon and sailor moon, but when I had watched them that was it... I like, hated cartoons and comics (I still do hate western comics, usually) for a long while after that. And one day my mom bought two volumes of Dragonball (something happened before but, whatever) and I hated them... I was mad at mom buying such crappy things and bought two volumes of DNAngel to show what she should buy if she's going to buy me comics from Japan, when I hated comics so much. And I read them and fell in love with them. After that I've read lots of manga and manhwa, most of them have been good, those with less deep in the storyline are the ones that isn't. XD
Well... I saw anime a bit before reading tough... but it's so boring to tell why and how and whatever, so don't bother to wonder how...

Well I would think you should at least show some respect because your mother actualy took her time and money to buy you something she thought you liked. There are a lot of people out there who wish they could have DVD's like that, but they have to pay for it themselves, and the parents don't want to buy it for them for various reasons. Plus they are very very expensive to purchase.

A quick question for you Crimson. Whats your aim with this poll?
I understand that your interested in other peoples interests and history but will you actually review the results in any way?

I dont know what my first anime is I'd have to say Pokemon and Dragonball z, Sailor Moon stuff along those lines. Now that I think about it I watched Inuyasha at a young age. I'd wake up in the middle of the night and instead of going to watch Disney channel I'd watch Inuyasha which was and still is on adult swim, so when all the other lil kids were sleeping I was watching a guy with a huge sword kill stuff. What got me into anime would have to be a mixture of the story line, and the drawings.
- Marty-Kun, I loved your post it was funny.

"Just came across it and liked it...."

Except, the like is more of a love now. I'll always be a moderate-fan of the japanese cartoon and comics. (or, Anime & Manga for the people who have to be so "perfect")

Funny, what truly got me into anime was actually the main background theme to the Inuyasha anime. Parents brought home a DVD of Inuyasha's first movie, and I didn't even have interest in it, but left it on the menu selection screen with the main theme playing and it got stuck in my head =)

Eventually watched the series and found it decent, but really liked the music, watched a few other series based on music recommendations, and particularly liked the story to a few of them, which got my interest in anime started.

I watched pokemon when i was younger (like most people i guess), but my sister got me into it properly when i was about 11.

The first manga i read was Fruits Basket, i completely fell in love with it becuase of the storylines, the art, and that they are mostly WAY funnier than average American cartoons =)
My first proper anime was Naruto; i don't think there is a better one to start with!!

And now i'm just slightly addicted =D

Strange... I would think that people would say that marvel and DC comics have more violence and action.

You can't possibly say no anime is funny... Clannad, Rozen Maiden, Hayate no Gotoku, Minami-ke, Haruhi Suziumiya, Zero no Tsukaima... Surely something made you grin?

Before I really knew what anime was, I watched Pokemon and Sailor Moon. I just thought they were normal cartoons. :P My first manga was Wolf's Rain, which I read in... sixth grade, I think? Then I just kinda watched Naruto over my brother's shoulder until I randomly borrowed some manga from a friend a few months ago. Now I'm almost obsessed. ^^
