View Full Version : Which anime have the best music?

Neerolyte
August 25th, 2004, 04:14 am
I'll just put this in Anime section

I'm thinking of buying a OST of an anime, but can't decide which one. I have Love Hina, Final Fantasy, Fruit Basket, Studio Ghibli (collection of songs from their movies), Full Moon, and Naruto

Noir has some of the best music I've heard in any anime, TV show or movie. However I think there are 3 different OST's so that may make it harder.

:/ darn it...can u name some of the good song names? so maybe i could find it on the back of the CD and maybe choose a good OST to buy

.Hack/Sign

I don't think you should buy a random OST, but pick an OST with music of an anime you've seen and liked. I had the Noir OST long before I saw the anime but it hardly appealed to me. I suggest you pick an OST of an anime you like.

I'd go with the Boys Be OST.

Hehe, I get the soundtracks before I've seen the anime but it's best to get one from an Anime you've seen so you understand the context of the different songs/themes. I recommend Evangelion OST 1 (as it doesn't have the 5 billion versions of Fly me to the Moon on it), .hack//SIGN, Noir and if you like jazz music Cowboy Bebop is good too. :) What sort of music are you into - metal, classical, jazz etc? Different animes have different musical styles - NGE is primarily contemporary orchestral - lots of brass, strings etc with the occasional electric guitar bunged in here and there. Yuki Kajiura's anime music (.hack and Noir) is influenced by a number of different styles - e.g. choir music, electronic music, experimental soundscapes and standard classical music. And so on ;)

The anime hellsing has some really good music on it. Such as A world without logos and Shi-kuretto Karuma Serenade from the second OST.

But then again, you may not like the type of music it is, so it's best if you go with the music from an anime you like. Just like Angelic said.

I love the soundtracks for .hack//SIGN and Noir especially... so unique

but then again I'm a fanboy for Yuki Kajiura

Elite666
August 25th, 2004, 06:43 am
If you do decide to go with the Noir soundtrack I'd say the best one to get is the first OST. It has all the best songs like Canta Per Me, Melodie, Les Soldats, Corsican Corridor, Lullaby and Snow. The others are good too but the first one has the most popular music on it. You can usually get a pretty good deal for all three on Ebay if you look.

Noir7
August 25th, 2004, 09:54 am
Noir, .hack//SIGN, Rurouni Kenshin and D.N Angel has very good music, but I wouldn't buy an OST of these.

Kyuu
August 25th, 2004, 07:29 pm
I have a soft spot for Prince of Tennis/Tennis no Oujisama's OSTs. It's a sports anime, so the music is fast-paced (for a lack of better word... >.>)

since .hack//SIGN has more music that it actually has animation, I have to suggest that too... ^^;;

Also, definately x/1999's soundtracks. It's slow and sad, and definately beautiful.

anything by Yuki kajiura is worth buying in my books

i have .hack//sign, liminality, Outlaw star, Neon Genesis 1, and Noir (my personal favorite)

I'm rather fond of .hack//SIGN but there are several good ones, such as gravitation and noir. One thought: don't buy the CHOBITS cd unless you love repetitiveness. I find that the same tune plays over and over again throughout the CD. It's still fun though, so if you have cash to burn...

Someone mentioned Kenshin, very good music right there
Another one you might look into would be Berserk, very interesting yet good songs put into that soundtrack

Let's see: Noir, .hack//sign and Liminality, Madlax, Aquarian Age, and anything else that I forgot by Ms. Kajiura.

Stellvia has amazing themes. Haibane Renmei has a relaxing classical soundtrack. FLCL has great vocals by The Pillows.

The first ost of full metal alchemist is good

anime_freak_1988
September 12th, 2004, 09:40 am
For me it would be Gundam Seed, Full metal Alchemist and rurouni kenshin :D
but it pretty much depends on what type of song you like.. :P

Neerolyte
September 12th, 2004, 04:31 pm
i bought .Hack//Liminalty which i think it's the best OST in my collection so far

i'm planning to buy Evangelion and FMA soon

ARG used so much money X_X oh well worth it

If you like spacey relaxing type kind of music, I'd suggest Wolf's Rain. Other than that, I like Noir and Cowboy Bebop, as well as Hellsing. .hack//SIGN is pretty good too, of course.

hkangel
September 17th, 2004, 01:20 pm
Either:

Noir
.hack//sign
Evangelion

It really depends on the type of music you like though

Neko Koneko
September 17th, 2004, 01:25 pm
Evangelion has some tracks that are nice but most songs are pretty bad in my opinion. Nothing compared to Hack Sign or Noir.

FLCL also has a nice OST if you like J-rock (and then I don't mean the ghey kind of guys like Gackt)

LingXiaoyu
September 17th, 2004, 08:56 pm
yeah..

i love the pillows....

very grunge-ish....

leaning towards punk...

but its good...

edit: i realized that ppl that don't noe that the flcl soundtrack is made up of songs by a band called "the pillows" would be very confused about wut im talking about...

Ichimonji
September 30th, 2004, 04:57 am
Erm...I myself tend to lean on the fast-paced, upbeat type of music, so I would totally recommend Initial D soundtracks (Eurobeat style music), probably even if you haven't seen the anime or read the manga before, just because it's so...energetic...

i think that .hack// (ex. foreigners, in the land of twilight), final fantasy (all de chocobo songs and many others), love hina (Yakusoku and others). also rk has ok music

Akayama Kaoru
October 7th, 2004, 01:28 am
So far, I've found Rurouni Kenshin and Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal to have the best OST music. Go Noriyuki Asakura and Taku Iwasaki!

The Samurai X soundtrack has slower music, but the RK one has a variety. Evangelion has an okay soundtrack, and PeaceMaker Kurogane is also okay...

Yoko Kanno is always great too.

I like the Naruto music too! The song...I think it was Sorrow and Sadness? I like that song...The ending/opening themes are great! My favorite song in Naruto that isn't an opening or ending is the...Hmm, it's the Go Go Naruto! song. The song when Naruto has to hide from that guy...Also, I love the song The Raising Fighting Spirit. The songs are here. (http://www.narutofan.com/index.php/content-multimedia,music) If you don't know what I'm talking about...You have to register to listening to them...It's free, so don't worry!

Another thing...Where can I get the flute music for Raising Fighting Spirit? I think that's a flute...

By the way, viet_pride15, I like your avatar and signature! Kakashi is cool and so is the Sharingan...On eBay they someone was selling Sharingan contacts!

My vote goes to almost anything by Yoko Kanno and Yuki Kajiura, especially the Cowboy Bebop, Escaflowne and Earth Girl Arjuna soundtracks. For YK, add the Shin KOR OST - that was very early in her career, but it still sounded good. And don't forget Takayuki Hattori's Captain Harlock: Endless Odyssey soundtrack if you're into dark, dramatic music.

Definitely .hack//SIGN. Yuki Kajiura has a great gift! The music is really beautiful...at least on the first soundtrack, i haven't heard the others. Kenshin has some really good music too, but I don't know if all the good ones are on one CD or not. I doubt it. The bad news is that it has some really annoying music too.

A good way of finding good anime music is to browse around Ichigos and preview the music via MIDI. It shows what the style of music the anime has.

Personally, I feel that Inuyasha has a good soundtrack, but the .hack series has some of the most diverse and most powerful songs (ex. B.T. Obsession (Specal Orchestra Version), and the opening theme).

Rurouni Kenshin. I like the music simply because of its unique style. Well, the "style" itself isn't very unique (in fact, it's really anime-ish) but it has a nostalgic feeling to it that I like.

Any anime with music by Yoko Kanno. 'nuff said. I think my personal favorite of hers is Brain Power'd which is amazing because I haven't even seen the anime. Of course the Bebop soundtracks are a must as are the Escaflowne ones. Lodoss War is good but not as good as those 2 imho. I haven't picked up Arjuna so unsure about that one.

Gankutsuou's soundtrack is making me squee right now. Just like the anime it mixes the old with the new... it goes from piano and opera singing to techno flawlessly.

Rurouni Kenshin is a huge favorite of mine. Specifically the soundtracks with dominantely Kyoto arc music or music from the OAVs.

Tenshi ni Narumon has to have the weirdest OST out there... and I adore it.

Hellsing's soundtracks took a little warming up time for me but then I was hooked to them... and the track titles are hilarious.

Hana Yori Dango has two soundtracks... the harder to find one has the long orchestral pieces used in the series... songs from 5-9 minutes filled with gorgeous themes for different characters and such. Doumyouji's, for instance, takes all of his themes... his music when he's violent, sad, overjoyed, and violent again... and it's all put together into one song that screams that it is HIS music despite the variations in the themes themselves. I think that sort of composing takes talent. Plus there are some well placed but lesser-known classical pieces in the series.

Oooh, Escaflowne music rocks very hard! XD It *does* though... Yoko Kanno's singin' voice is just as powerful as Kajiura's ~ :D

Noir has very good music too, same with Fullmetal Alchemist, 'specially Brat'ja (Brothers), Melissa, and Kesenai Tsumi (Indelible Scars)~

Mmmm Noir is amazing music. But the second CD has its good points as it includes the second ver of Salvos Nos and most of all INDIO!!! That song is featured in the particularly pivotal point in the series.
NGE is good good. Listening to Shuffle! OST for the moment which is actually quite brilliant! (I refer to the anime <_<)

Okay, I adore the music in Voices of a Distant Start, The Place Promised, Haibane Renmei and InuYasha.

I like some music from Full Metal Alchemist, Fushigi Yugi, Saikano, Gunslinger Girl...

Hmm... good OSTs...

Rozen Maiden - Good pieces all over place, too many to list...

Zero no Tsukaima - Mitsumune Shinkichi again, my particular favorites were Louise, Gandalv from season 1, and the piano arrangements and acoustic version of I Say Yes from season 2.

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha - Surprisingly good OST, it's apparently written by two westerners, plenty of symphonic stuff in there. One of the pieces reminds me of the Star Trek theme.

Fate/Stay Night - nice use of strings, a few of the main themes are quite sad (in a good way).

Code Geass - a variety of styles in this one, the insert songs are what I liked the most.

Steel Angel Kurumi - The OST is probably the best aspect of this series. Brilliantly done to be honest. Composer uses a large variety of instruments, and there are several spectacular symphonies in the OST. Although the only problem is that you'd probably have a good amount of difficulty finding any store that sells this.

Clannad - Good stuff. A lot of the pieces are very catchy, piano is nice.

If you're gonna go RANDOM, you can't go wrong with the Rurouni Kenshin OVA soundtracks--especially the one for Seishouhen--Gankutsuou, and Bartender. Both contain great pieces and none of those "fluff" pieces that really only take up space in shows. The RK OST I mentioned is mostly orchestrated, with a fair mix of slow and fast songs. Great stuff. <3 Heck, the Trust and Betrayal OST for RK is also great, as well. More slow pieces, but In Memories rocks.

The Gankutsuou one is a bit darker, but still very enjoyable--especially if you've seen the series!

So far, all the ones I mentioned are mostly orchestral or piano works.

BARTENDER if you love jazz piano/strings. Amazing soundtrack, but it really depends on tastes. But this is seriously my favorite anime OST of all time.

Other good ones: Honey and Clover OST (only if you've seen the show...not even kidding!), Bakumatsu (GREAT stuff...too bad the show didn't live up to the music, but as a stand-alone, both Bakumatsu OSTs are excellent)

If you want something more vocaly, Gravitation. It's much more modern-sounding, with tons of synth and guitars.

I tend to stay away from OSTs with really generic-sounding pieces...like the typical-sounding piano pieces that end up in tons of animes....if you have any idea what I'm talking about. =D

But yeah. If I had to choose three from my list, I'd say the two Rurouni Kenshin OVA OSTs, both Bakumatsu OSTs, and Bartender. Great CDs and no filler junk <3
