With marching snare most rolls are open meaning you can hear each double stroke you do. Keep your rolls as open as possible without taking away from the sound.
One thing that my teacher told me when trying out for percussion is when you audition your rudiments, start slow gradually speed up to peak speed then slow back down. And when I say start slow, I mean slow. That shows control.

lets see... also with the traditional grip keep try to keep a tight yet relaxed grip, tight to the point where you'll be able keep a firm grip, but relaxed to the point where you'll be able to do diddles and low-and-go(a.k.a. fast) without straining much. Also in self, be relaxed. If you're nervous and tense your hands will follow suite, causing you to crush everything you play!:P
i might have some exercises i can email you if youd like!
i myself am trying out for snare on my winterline as well...
i should make it seeing as A.) im one of the two best sophomores that werent on drumline for the season, B.) There's too many open spots NOT to make it, and C.) Lets just say... our freshman need work, 8th graders even more... which makes me wonder why our d-line instructor opened winterline up to 8th graders...

tryouts didn't go so well??? Im sorry bro... maybe next time you should go out from snare and bass(what i'm always told to do, and ironically i'm filling in for a bass this saturday)
:sigh: i wish our tryouts would come quickly... like now, when i actually feel like preparing these really simple tryout exercises that prolly none of the 8th or frosh can play...x_x

Be careful about chatting one-on-one in here, guys... probably safer to take it to PM, or this thread'll probably end up locked.

which is why we must thank Pantalaimon10 ultimately for without him(and his awesome tenor ways) we'd have nothing!

Oh my God, that is so freaking true... Except for where I live. lol
Yay! Solo and Ensemble! I love this time of year! I'm doing a multi-drum solo called Inspirationes Diabolique and Debussy's Dr. Gradus ad Parnassum for marimba. Not to mention all the other ensembles and stuff *coughwinterdrumlinecough* we're doing. ^_^

Well, does anyone know of any challenging marimba literature that sounds good and isn't played by seventeen people at every high school in the country? (i.e. no Virginia Tate, Cherry Blossoms, dear God, no Rain Dance) I know that's pretty specific, but I'm just curious to see what I can find.

Well, I like Mars and everything (I actually like all the Planets), and I'll be sure to check that out. Any good solo material, though?
