I was just wondering, I know all of us here play some sort of instrument but, what about singing- the voice is also an instrument, obviously it's capable of making music.
So yeah, anyone?
I do, I'm a lead Soprano II in my school's choir. =]

Yeah, I am a Tenor II in my school's Vocal Ensemble and Concert Choir and have been in choir since 7th Grade. I come from a family of singers. My dad's in the Mormon Tabernacle Choir (for those of you that know what that is). I also got a superior rating at State Solo and Ensemble festival sophomore year, although I have not had voice lessons.

Do I sing? Yes. Can I sing? Debateable.
I've been an alto in choirs pretty much whenever i've been at a school that has one, so all through primary school and HS, but not for the past couple years. I was singing all the xmas carols when our band wasn't playing at carols by candlelight the other night though, and people seemed oddly surprised that I a) knew the words (singing them all through 10 years of school every year does that to you) and b) could actually be in tune and sound vaguely decent (they know me for my clarinet skills, not vocals!)

I LOVE the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. I have like most of the christmas carols on my iPod from MTC. *about to have a heart attack.* that so cool, let's trade dads. jkjkjk.
ur lucky.
oh and congrats on your superiority.
I however, haven't sung for long.
I started this summer on private voice lessons.
and when school started I had join choir [my 1st yr]. we do concerts and all. we won't start doing festivals until spring.
But just 2 days ago we had our winter concert. It was so beautiful. I got a solo doing "I wonder as I wander" with a group of 5 girls from the advance woman's chorus.... I cried during the song, so beautiful. =[
I feel blessed for being given such an opportunity. =]

I can sing pretty well, however, I'm a baritone so a lot of songs go too high for me to be comfortable with. I'm currently in my school's production of Into the Woods.
Basically I love singing and am pretty damn good at it.

I had to quit choir class (school) just last year, because I could not do both choir and band over here. ._.; I sort of do regret doing so, I have to admit.
Nowadays, what I do in terms of singing is just humming random things that are stuck in my head.

People tell me I could sing if I tried. I just need to learn to control my voice. I can hum almost anything perfectly, but as soon as I try to put it to words I sound like a cat caught in a lawnmower. :P
The last time I really sang anything was my 3rd grade Christmas pageant. I even had a solo. Course the only reason I got it was I was the only kid in the class who wanted it.

Amen to that. I can sing only with other people or music.
I sing Alto II and Tenor I. But I'd rather play my instruments. <3 :]
My band director taught us to sing really. He has us sing a concert F chord to warm up to see if we can match the pitch with the instruments. Then has us sing and F-Stretch (chromatic down, then chromatic up). And then we do it on the instruments. It's really neat.

I'm a mezzo soprano. But in my high school choir I'm a soprano. our teacher quit last year though and the current one isn't really organized... :(
I've just started taking lessons in April last year, but I don't practice much, mainly because I'm quite shy about practicing at home, cause I sing pretty loud >.> But I'm getting into a musical theatre program this year, which starts next month. Wish me luck! ^^

I sang in choir for a while. I had to quit because there were little male voices, and all the guys had to sing in Alto. I can actualy reach pretty high notes in my upper voice. The lowest note I sing is a E upbove C2(maybe a D), and the highest would be a D(almost an Eb) above middle C. It I go much higher then that I sound pretty bad. I like to sing with my ear phones on, so I cant hear myself. ^.~

I've been practicing a bit lately. So far I've found out I'm a tenor (F3 to F5) and that I have trouble with my voice cracking because I don't like singing loud enough for anyone else in the house to hear. Psychological issue, I guess. It wouldn't be my only one. XD
Can anyone suggest a few easy songs to practice with? I've already gone through most of my Disney collection. :P

I used to sing 'professionally' but I kinda gave it up after I entered Uni. Now I mostly sing in the shower. Occassionally, I compose stuff XD By humming of course. I sing way better than I play piano XD
@Nate: I'm not quite sure what songs best suit you, but I started by doing stuff from musicals. Try Memory (Cats), Sound of Music stuff, Oliver, Fiddler on the Roof ect. Alternatively, you could start by doing some Italian songs (that was what I had to do after Disney and Musical stuff). Personally, I just like singing along to songs on the radio - messing with the harmony, stuff like that.

But I've been singing for enjoyment ever since I found out I could make noise with my mouth, and singing in choirs since elementary school. And musicals since eighth grade.
Actually just got home from a five-hour All County rehearsal. And I've got to be there at 9 AM tomorrow.
Favorite piece right now: He Watching Over Israel from Elijah. Absolutely in love with the harmonies.

I used to sing "boy" soprano for most of my life, then about the time of 9th grade, my voice changed. Now I'm a bass! :heh: Of course when that happened, I got drafted into my school chorus and jazz choir... and the musicals.
I'm a rather good singer. Sight read fairly well (better than most I know) and have a good ear for pitch usually. My voice is partial to the jazz/doo-wop sound (I'm not operatic by any means, tho I could fake it). I like to think I blend well, but then again our "men's section" in high school was 4 guys... and I was one of 2 basses (to be honest the other guy was a low baritone). Tho, you should have seen the look on my chorus teacher's face when I told her I sang at Carnegie Hall with my father on stage with me. Now *THAT* was a concert... ^.^
Next to playing the trumpet, singing is my favorite thing to do musically. :)

I've got a pretty good singing voice. I mean, I went to competition for it last year, and ended up getting picked for the All-County chorus. I've got a weird range. I used to be a Soprano I, but I've settled more comfortably as a Soprano II now. At the same time though, I can sing lower than some of the Altos and Tenors in my school chorus. It's REALLY weird.

@Blackhole: You can try lifting your cheekbones (aka smiling with your eyes), it brightens the tone and lifts your voice, which reduces tendencies of going flat. Support is still of utmost importance, of course.

I sang EVERY Who song and the Doors songs when I was like 3-years old, and I haven't really sung since. I've been thinking about starting to get a voice, though. I do take a liking to make my own harmonies in church, or try to follow one of the (written) tenor lines, or at least alto... since my voice can never really sing melodies (either they go too high for my "higher" voice, or they go too low for my "normal" voice) I'm interested to just record me singing Pearl Jam songs or something. Nothing too fancy, but just to develop confidence, then... possibly something else! XD

Unlike most people here, I don't play any instruments at all unless you want to count the piano. (But the only thing I can do on the piano is play my part for practice purposes only. =P)
Instead, I sing. I've been singing since 5th grade. I sing Soprano I at school, but at All-County and All-State I sing Soprano II.
I think I'm a pretty good singer for someone who has never had private lessons. I've been to All-County and All-State twice and this year is going to be my third for both. I went to State last year too with my solo and actually earned a superior.

I've always had a little bit of a secret desire to be in a choir. I'm very shy and I think I would have a problem singing in front of others.. It would take me a while to gain confidence to do so.. Still, I sing when there is nobody around. It makes me feel a bit euphoric and happy, for some reason. I wish I could be taught to sing well, though. The voice is so beautiful!

Reviving.
I'm in Concert Choir this year (It's one of the groups under the highest group, Chamber Singers) and I'd like to know if you guys have any recommended syllable warm-ups. For example: 1234 5432151 (zezezezeahahahahah-ah-ah). I've had to try and hear what word my teacher is even using the past three days for warm-ups, and I spend more time figuring that out than actually doing the exercise. Are there many common ones? Just post some that work well for at-home practicing.
Another thing. Range building. I know these kind of things you have to work up to, but I'm trying to get as much of a good start on it as possible. I sing Bass in my section. Our lowest note is an E2 (which I can just reach..my clearest lowest note is about a G2/A2, but I can manage that E2 so-so) and our highest is a D4. I am able to "falsetto" a G5, but that's basically taking a big breath and singing molto forte. I want to be able to reach (at least) an E4 with chest voice (I think that's the correct term?) without having to take a specific breath for it and have to sing loud. That D4 is marked piano, so I have to use falsetto, or else I am straining my vocal chords.. and that's a bitch trying to sing after practicing that for just 5 minutes.
Thanks for any/all help.

No, if I sang, the glass would break, car accidents would occur, the sun would never rise, the moon would never fall, the world would be wrapped in an endless cycle of repeats(Endless Eight, Suzumiya Haruhi No Yuutsu.), Nostradamus would destroy us all, and the depths of the underworld would rise and take our lives and slowly, crush our feeble souls.

I sing. I'm in my church's choir and this year I started Select Choir at my high school. I write a lot of music. I am a baratone/tenor/alto and sometimes soprano (II and I on very rare occasions).

12345
54321
15453525
1545321
15453525
1545678
or we do one that does like this:
1
121
12321
1234321
123454321
12345654321
1234567654321
123456787654321
8
878
87678
8765678
876545678
87654345678
8765432345678

They can be hard at first, but you'll get the hang of them. They're really fun! Convince your choir teacher to do the second one in a round!

I sing, though I'm not in my school's chorus (I would if I could though! But you can only be in either chorus or band, and I chose band this year.). I suppose I'm a pretty good singer. I have a bit of a high pitched voice, so I can reach some high notes with ease and still sound good. My friends say I sound good, so I'm hoping I am! But other than singing, I play the flute and am the best player in my section (although, there are only two other flutes) according to my band director. I'm excited too, because I get to go to Honor band (or county band) and If I make the audition, All State! I'm going to work my behind off!

I guess I sing. Not for Choir, but I sing. I have surprisingly good voice.
Currently, I am an Alto, but I'm pretty sure it'll change because of Puberty. :P

I run choirs :3
For syllables i usually use:
A proper copper coffee pot;
Three fifths, five sixths;
Cricket Wicket
singing each line on one note of a scale and then singing it again either up or down a note to complete a scale.
Or my new favourite:
pitta potta patta, pitta potta patta, pitta potta patta, pitta potta patta, pick at a packet a, pick at a packet a, packet a packet of pie.
in C major, one note per syllable, CDEFGE, DEFGAF, EFGABG, FGABCA, GABCDB, ABCDE CBAGFEDC.
Yeah :S

:D I sing...but not in choir or chorus...:/...>< In elementary school, they always made us sing in a really high pitched voice...after two years of it, I forgot how to sing on a regular octave :/...XD Roflz.
I love to sing...although on certain keys I'm really bad... most people tell me I'm really good at it...aand...I usually sing JPop...and...KPop...and occasionally something on the radio...and...I write my own songs :).

I sing my heart out, unashamed, elegantly, powerfully at anytime... with my guitar...
... as long as nobody hears me. I haven't been able to sing in a while because of this.

>< You should be less self-conscious about people hearing your singing. Of course though, I'm one to talk :heh:...

Well to answer your question not really
cause I'm a bit shy to sing.
Maybe if I'm in the house or a confine room
that nobody can hear me :)
But I love singing and listening to music.
