View Full Version : I resolve to draw!

HopelessComposer
January 3rd, 2008, 03:08 am
I'm a crappy artist. I have always been a crappy artist. I want to be an amazing artist. The only way to do that is to draw constantly. See where this is going?

My resolution for this year is to draw at least one decent (relative to my skill level, of course) work a day. Hopefully soon I'll be a bit stronger as an artist. I'll be updating this thread daily, so I encourage all of you to check back often, critiquing me when you check in. Or you can just visit to see how I'm progressing. Of course, kind replies are appreciated, as they'll strengthen my resolve to continue updating everyday. Despite this, please keep in mind that I want you all to critique my drawings to death; drawing every day won't help me if I make the same mistakes over and over again, right? ;)

'kay, so let's start this thing then! My second drawing of the new year, and the first for this thread:
The Space Bird! He has two beaks! Horror of horrors! And how incredibly creative of me!
http://eterna-soft.com/images/010208finishedbird.png
Yesterday's drawing is in my sketchbook, and I don't have a scanner right now, sadly. I'll post the first drawing sometime in the future when my scanner is running again. Check back every day for something new! Thanks for the help guys!

I'm no art expert, but I think it looks fine. Maybe the legs/feet could use a bit of work... Unless you meant for him to look like he's taking a poop.

He's not pooping! D':
I think you're right though; his legs look a bit short, now that you've mentioned it. It does give the idea that he's kind of squatting down, huh?
[quote]Your coloring seems great to me.
Thanks, thanks. It could be like a million times better though. I can see in my mind what's wrong with it, but if I try to fix it, I can't pick the right colors out. It's actually pretty flat looking coloring; it could be so much more vibrant looking if I was better at this.

Thanks for the critiques! :3
Edit: Ah, Landstrasse too! Hahah, thank you sir, though your avatar's background is cleaner and nicer looking than my picture's. X3

Now, on to today's update:
A still-life of the watering can that spends all of its time lying about my bedroom!
http://eterna-soft.com/images/010308FinishedWateringCan1.png
Why do I even have a watering can? Why is it in my bedroom?! Well, I like to grow plants, and they spend most of their time in my room (all of Winter and Fall). The watering can follows them indoors, as they've all become pretty good friends.

This drawing was pretty tough for me. It made it even more painfully obvious that I suck at picking colors by eye. It also shows that I don't know how to render brushed metal at all. I started over once, and almost quit halfway through the second try, but this thread saved this drawing from oblivion, heheh. I think it came out alright, despite the major problems I had painting it. Could have been much better, but oh well I guess. Feel free to rip it apart, and tell me how to make it better. Thanks guys.

Not having a picture of the actual can makes it a little hard to critique. :P

It's very good, but if I absolutely have to pick something to "rip apart"... I'll say the coloring. It seems a little harsh (is that the right word?). It looks more like a striped can than a metal one. Like I said, this would be easier if I knew what the can looked like.

I did it by eye, and I don't have a camera, so I don't have a picture of it either, sadly. It looks like a normal watering can though, hahah. So yes, the coloring is way too harsh; I'm going to try painting it again next week in a more watercolor style, as opposed to this pastel picture I've got going on right now. X3

I like your pastel style.
Thanks! I'd like my pastel style a lot more if it were intentional though; when I started this picture, I wanted it to be mostly blue, and in a watercolor style. I'm going to try again next week though, so hopefully it looks different then. :)

You color using what now?

They both look boring // Great!

Try adding some movement in your next one to create some diversity

If I could make myself truly believe that, I'd be a much happier artist. XD
I'm sure that's true in some ways though. The subconscience does do a huge amount of work while drawing, after all. Still, I'd rather have much drawings come out the way I plan them.

You color using what now?
I'm using Open Canvas right now. It's a very nice little program, and it only costs about eighty USD.

They both look boring // Great!
That's....confusing! :heh:
Do you mean they're drawn well, but the subject matter is boring? That's probably true, yeah. I need more practice before I start drawing full scenes though, so my drawings are going to be boring for about another two weeks, sadly.

Try adding some movement in your next one to create some diversity
Aye, pretty soon, I hope! I'm just trying to bang out colors and form before I worry about drawing complex set ups.

I'll be updating again tomorrow. Hurrah!

No problem by me. I copied the idea from someone else, who copied it from someone else. Hahah! :3

Of course I have a tablet. I could do this with a mouse too, but it'd be a pain in the ass and it would take twice as long for no reason. :heh:
Still, my coloring is pretty bad. Some nice guy on the art forum I frequent corrected my watering can for me, and put it to shame, easily.

I think that you should draw X pictures of things in motion for every Y pictures of stills.

I agree with that notion, but I don't have a scanner right now, and it's kind of hard to bring my tablet outside with me. ;__;
I'm just going to be drawing stills for like a week, and then I'll have all motion pictures next week. Then I'll start rotating back and forth between them.

Well, how embarrassing. I'm only on my third day, and I've already got an a crappy update. = \
I decided to do an hours worth of figure thirty second gesture drawings today, because I've heard that gesture drawings are great practice, but I've never tried any until now. Sadly, I only did my first few on my tablet before realizing that I couldn't draw fast enough if I wasn't using my sketchpad...so I've only got like five minutes worth of work to actually show you guys. On the plus side, I didn't really get any better at gesture drawing by the end of the hour, so what I'm showing you is a decent representation of the work I did tonight. Here it is!
http://www.eterna-soft.com/images/010204FinishedFigure.png
I don't know how this is really critique-able, but whatever. I think the only real advice on this is "try some more until you stop being miserable at it." Unless you guys have any general advice on doing quick gesture drawings.

Hopeless your drawings look good. I cant believe you think your a bad drawer* this word looks likes its spelled wrong. if not its spelled kinda funny. dang confusing english! & english is the only lang i know so sad.* anyways, I like your drawings and your drawing style. keep up the good work.
Hahah, thanks Chestnut. I just won't be happy until I'm a super-awesome-expert. X3
And I'm not sure "drawer" is a word...at least not one that doesn't relate to furniture. That's probably why it looks weird. :heh:

Nate River

Yep. Those are gesture drawings alright. :P Not much else to say.

I used to do those in school all the time without even knowing what I was doing. I'd always finish tests and whatnot early so I'd start drawing how all the other kids were sitting at their desks. I'm weird, I know, but everyone would always ask to see them after.

The clouds made peace with one another, and decided to sit on the horizon without making war unto one another. They're so mature. :'3
And you can see the details I did and didn't add now, hahah.

Mandatory nitpicking: The horizon seems a little bit too curved and the clouds seem to form the shape of a woman laying down. Her feet are the mound on the right and her... *ahem* are the mound on the left. She must have implants.

Well, the horizon is actually supposed to be like that; the whole picture is curved a bit to allow the horizon to be curved without breaking the picture's perspective. I kind of a fan of the fish-eye effect. X3
I'm not seeing the woman, sadly. You have a better imagination than I do.
If anything, I think the clouds are making a OwO kind of face, with the two mounds being the eyes. XD

Tonight's update!
http://eterna-soft.com/images/010708JarFinished.png
The jar I decorated into a sugar jar! It's part of a three piece spice set I spent an afternoon making one day. I think I made them because my mom decorated the kitchen badly, and I thought something like, "we need cute spice jars in here to make this place happier looking." I ended up making the jars like two years after saying that, but whatever. I did this painting tonight because I wasn't totally happy with the watering can from a few days ago. I thought my color judgment needed some sharpening, so I decided to do another weird surface tonight. I think it came out pretty well.

And I'll be updating tomorrow, of course. Which goes without saying, but I like saying it anyway for some reason. I need to say something at the end of updates, right? :3

Heheh, indeed. The stopper is clear glass, except for the rim inside, which is a silverish plastic. The napkin is under the glass stopper. :3

I like the exclamation point too! The jar didn't look happy enough without it, hahah. Nobody uses the spice jars I made though; I just keep them in my room, decorating my bed. They look really nice in the morning when they're catching the sunlight - very cheerful! They're doing their job! ^_^

A lava lamp.
http://eterna-soft.com/images/020108LampFinished.png
And a lighter!
http://eterna-soft.com/images/020108LighterFinished.png
These took about half an hour each. I was teaching (or at least trying to teach) my uncle how to paint, so these were just quick sketches. I'm very happy with the lighter though; I actually like it more than most of the stuff I've ever done, which is a good sign! I'm not really happy with the lava lamp at all. I couldn't figure out how to blend my strokes well enough to give it the extremely soft shading it needed. Ah well.

The lighter looks really cool! and well... i dont know what else to say other than it looks really awesome and cool!!!
Hahah, thanks thanks! :3

The lamp looks pretty cool too... but at first i couldnt really tell that it was a lava lamp... maybe you could've drew an outline of the lamp...idk, it could be just me and my lack in imagination
Heheh, I probably should have made the outline more obvious. X3
Then again, I kind of wanted people to wonder what it was, so I guess it's fine if it's vague. Maybe. > >

Btw... how do you blend your colours, like from one colour blending into another colour without making look so obvious?
Well....the trick is just to pick the colors you're actually seeing, as opposed to the colors you think you're seeing. If you can figure out what the true colors are that you're seeing, and you can pick them and put them down on the canvas, the colors will blend naturally, of course. For the lighter, I used all opaque, hard brushes; I didn't really blend it at all, which is why I'm so happy with it. It shows that my eye for color is developing, as I didn't need to blend the colors together. :3

The lava lamp isn't very lava lampish...can Hardly see the outline! DO IT AGAIN lol jking. Nice lighter
lol, thanks. And I'm surprised you even noticed the outline, it being so subtle. XD

I'll be the echo tonight and say the lighter is great but the lava lamp does need some work. I wouldnt have a clue what it was if you hadn't said. If the "lava" was actually bubbling up more, it'd be more obvious. But it's just kinda sitting there. The color looks fine to me though, contrary to your self-criticism.
Aye, I had just turned the lamp on when I started drawing it, so the lava was just a big clump of wax at the bottom of the lamp. I would have drawn it bubbling anyway, but I had just finished giving my uncle a big lecture on drawing EXACTLY what you see while painting, and I didn't want to prompt any smart remarks from him, hahah. It would definitely be a more interesting (and recognizable) painting if I had drawn the lava bubbling though. :3

Thanks for the comments everybody. I'm still on track (meaning I don't hate life right now) for tomorrow's update. I just got a new mp3 player from my uncle though (as thanks for the art lesson I guess), so I'll be drawing that instead of my ancient CD player. The mp3 player is black and sexy, so it'll probably end up making a better painting anyway.

Well, I finally started working on painting my Sansa, about a week behind schedule (sorry, hahah!). Here's what I've got so far; I'll be finishing it tomorrow I guess, because I need to sleep a little bit before going to class tomorrow.

I want your babies
Fun fact: I learned to paint to impress some girl I liked in highschool.
Fun fact #2: I finished this painting tonight so I could show it to the hot girl who sits on the side of me in Managerial Accounting tomorrow.
Fun fact #3: I'm doing a hardcore fox statue as my first project in ceramics, while everyone else is making shitty vases. I'm doing this to impress the hot girl who sits next to me in Ceramics.
Fun fact #4: If girls didn't exist, I'd probably never get any art done, hahahah. X3

Anyway, thanks for the offer. If I ever have any spare babies, I'll ship them over to you. Take good care of them!

Heheh, I have one, but I don't use it. I only care about sharing my art with people I talk with regularly, hence me posting it here.
Besides, I'm making my own (incredibly sexy) website for my art. It should be done in a few days, actually...
Love you guys. lulz. :3

Edit: Oh yeah, you can sell prints on deviantart, huh?
I'll have to practice a little harder...a second source of income would be nice, even if it is a very small one. Plus it'd just be cool to sell my stuff, heheh. Need to get a bit better first, though.
Thanks DB, now I have one more reason to work. I need money.
I can draw all half naked girls and stuff. I'm sure ecchi pinups will sell if they're done well. Good thing I'm a pervert, which allows my art to be 400% better while drawing scantily clad gals. X3

I'm going to try something very different for the next painting...I hope it comes out well.
Wish me luck!

Ah, I did it with a mouse. (I was at work, hahah!) Thanks for the compliment.
But nah, it's not MS Paint's fault that it's confusing. The picture is ambiguous for a few reasons: my less than awesome color choices (while they're better than usual, they're still far from where they could be!), the fact that I didn't clean up the drawing, and the fact that I didn't finish the drawing all bring this picture down. (I think if I continued on and painted the rest of the scene, it would be easier to figure out what's going on. Tunnels floating in space don't really make much sense, lol.) My lack of motor skills also didn't help the picture look any cleaner - my sucky drawing hand jitters all over the place if I'm not careful! X3
Anyway, thanks for the replies guys. I'll definitely have something awesome up here for you tomorrow.

So...yeah. I won't promise any update times, because I have no idea how long it'll take me to get good enough to pull off this drawing. I overestimated myself, hahah. I will promise that I'm working hard, and that the next drawing I post in this thread will be something even the best anime studios would be proud to have created. Look forward to it. And sorry again for not keeping any sort of deadlines. I keep on forgetting that good artwork takes a ridiculous amount of work. X3

I was going to answer all of your responses when I updated, but the update is taking a lot longer than I thought it would, so I'll go ahead and answer them now I guess:

Thanks again, Reina. ^_^
It is a little bit of both though; if the color choices were better, the picture would make more sense. If it were cleaner, it would also make more sense. Better color choices would benefit the picture more though, so the picture fails more because of my lack of skill than my laziness, heheh.

Hi friends, there's a girl I'm really into and I was thinking of ways to show her that I think she's really special, something that no-one else has ever done for her. I'm not sure if she's majorly into art, but she takes it as a subject at college. So, I sometimes do stencils and stuff, just when I get bored. If someone made you a stencil on a canvas would you think it was really lame or nice?

No, just kidding. If someone made anything for me, I'd find that very sweet. I don't know if girls would find it "cool," though. Which is what you really want her to think of you, lol. Anyway, use your own judgment and do what you think is best. We can't really help you because we don't know the girl (or you).

Also, you can make your own threads, you know. Just click on "new thread" instead of posting random things in the threads of others. :heh:
