Im kinda jealous to you transcribers and i wanna ask a few questions...

1. When did you start taking an interest in transcribing?
2. How did you improve your transcribing skills?
3. Do you think you're pro? (rate yourself:heh:)

I really don't count as a transcriber since I've only done one song, but I'll say this anyway...

1. A couple weeks ago.
2. I didn't. Finale Notepad does all the hard work for me. Anyone with any experience at all in basic theory can transcribe with this program.
3. Heck no. 1/10

1. About late 2005, early 2006.
2. Listening to a lot of music, practicing intervals, and a lot of transcribing. MIDI transcribing at first, but now I'm pretty good with an MP3.
3. I'd give myself a 6/10 but I'm working on the last four points.

2. depends. some people just have a good ear and sense of rhythm. I suggest work on being able to identify a note (name, accidentals, etc...) just by hearing it and creating a decent accompaniment part is also good.
3. dunno maybe 6/10 because I take a long time due to laziness and lack of time.

BTW Porsche, when you say transcribing MIDIs, could you define? Do you have Finale? That way you could just import it and it and it would automatically transcribe it?

What I really meant to say way arrange from a MIDI. That way you get the hang of what's right to do and what's not. But sometimes you get fun like this... a good way to see if you can count and tell free tempo changes.

1. 1 month after I joined this forum.
2. Music theory, relative pitch, paying attention to detail, and making up my own tricks. :shifty: I started with Finale Printmusic 2006 (on MIDI), and I have been transcribing ever since (on MP3 and MIDI). :)
3. 8/10; lack of time, but quality of notation is good...

(Which reminds me: I have to get to the MIDI requests on Friday...)

Since I joined the forums. August 21st 2007 x]

2. How did you improve your transcribing skills?
Transcribe more and more....and more =P
Oh and a lot of help from established transcribers like Josh and bishieXotaku.

3. Do you think you're pro? (rate yourself)
.......LOL a person who don't know jack about writing music theory wise....and don't know 90% of the music symbols and accent out there..... 4/10.... 4 because I can still transcribe-_-

1. June 2006. mainly video game music.

2. Transcribe, transcribe, and transcribe, and get familiar with it. Learn music theory. teach yourself. Dont use midis (those are for cowardice transcribers who want an easy way out.) What everyone else said. The rest depends on certain degrees of a person's hearing and the other rest is a secret.

8/10. I have very keen hearing senses. I can detect and transcribe instruments (background) buried behind dominant instruments. +1 if I had "something" to supplement my transcriptions, but I'm tight on budget. +1 if im majoring in music or receive a music education. other than that 8/10.

btw I have a question about midis. People use them in their arrangements and 99% of the time, u don't need permission. Isn't that considered stealing? shouldn't the midi sequencer be the one who deserves the credit let alone be mentioned somewhere in the file info? importing midis and labeling it yours is just like cutting and pasting text into your essay. I've had this question for some time now so if anyone can shed some light, that would be appreciated.

1. See sig, Jan of 2008, haha. Actually, I've wanted to write music for a very long time now, but only recently got the programs to do it.
2. I don't consider it transcribing skills. I learn and play all my music by ear, this naturally gives me a head start on know what notes are what. However, transcribing music into actual score has improved my reading abilities I think.
3. Ha! Far from it. Maybe a 2-3/10 at best. If anyone has seen a transcription of mine, they'll see that there's hardly any expression or accidental markings in there. Something to improve on I guess... Atleast any sort of melody I do is mostly correct....

Can someone explain to me what the whole midi transcribing thing is about?
And how is it a 'coward's' way out? @_@

As time passes, you'll be embarassed at your old arrangements that you don't want to consider them as yours anymore. heh I think this happens to everyone. playing music by ear is actually transcribing. So yes, you have some transcribing skills. As long as you can depict things by ear good enough, that's all that matters. and just so you know, there's a difference between arranging and transcribing (arrangement and transcription). You can look it up on wikipedia.

Midi transcribing is this. You use any notation software (such as Finale) to open up the midi and you'll be able to look at the notes and everything. All you have to do is pick which track to use. then cut and paste it into a new score. Then you label it as your arrangement/transcription. You don't even have to listen to the original song. Yes that is cheap, hence why I said "those are for cowardice transcribers who want an easy way out." This may be fine for beginners, but if you become too dependent on it, you won't be able to improve on anything besides improving your cut and paste skills:lol: Now my question is, is this plagiarism?

1. Oh about 5 years ago
2. The more I did the better I got (I hope)
3. Nah, I know I'm not. I do the best I can.

Ohh, that's what you mean... Well, the point is that if you already have the midi of it, it means that someone else most likely already transcribed it before. No work involved at all lol.

If MIDI transcribing were that easy, I would be finished with all of my requests right now. -_- Good example of how hard it usually is: http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j266/Bbclarinetist/Noname-5.jpg
http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j266/Bbclarinetist/Noname-4.jpg

I have seen people who have dared to submit stuff like this (just off a MIDI, as mentioned above), but it just doesn't work 75% of the time. :\ If it were true that people could just open the MIDI and just get the sheet music, I wouldn't have made the request thread.

Plagiarism?... Opinions on whether it is differs...

^ Haha... that looks fun... I'm sure they're no problem for people with like 7 fingers on each hand =)

Although I'm curious, where would you even get the midis in the first place?

1. A few weeks back, beginning of last month
2. I'd rate Finale Notepad's transcribing skills pretty good, it does all the grunt work. :p
3. Not even close, I just convert midis and play with it until it's perfected.

Since this thread is dead, I'm a new transcriber :P

1) When you made the thread asking to transcribe Lost in love and Koitte Modokashii.
2) I don't know... after all I AM A NEWBIE.
3) I'll be extremely honest, 1/100... I'd give myself a lower rating, but I'm too lazy :P.
