Ok, I realize that there is a thread dealing with game music, but I'm really interested in opinions on themes alone. I didn't see a thread like this, so I'm putting it up.

So, there are many great games out there, and one of the first impressions you get from a game is it's theme. I'm not interested in which game has the best music, only the best theme. Period. No ending themes. No 'underworld' themes. Just the main themes. Some themes are overall just great, such as the Zelda Theme. Some are extremely memorable, such as the Mario theme. And some are plain beautiful, such as the Kingdom Hearts theme.

If everyone could vote on one theme, I'll tally the votes up here. If you vote for more than one, I'll take the one you mention first in your post. Feel free to give honorable mentions to other games you thought had great themes, but just weren't worthy of your vote. I'm interested in learning about new themes, so please mention other good ones.

An important quality of a main theme is that it should be able to reocur in throughout the game and kind of give a unity to the whole music production of the game. It should be memorable and be able to impart a range of emotions (the melody should not be reliant on major or minor 3's for instance). I know we are supposed to keep Final fantasy out of this, but... The main theme of Final Fantasy 7 is by far the most complete one I have ever heard. It sums up the whole game in a very pleasant way and it is reused throughout the game (although sometimes in altered shapes).

so there you have it. I will think long and hard to see if I find any better main theme but I doubt I will.

Frog's theme from Chrono trigger, hands down.

The orchestrated arrangement of Zelda's main overworld theme in Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - Hyrule Symphony album is very good.

Also, the Super Smash Brothers Melee: Smashing... Live! Album is also quite good. The piece titled 'Great Medly' has one of the best trumpet solos I've heard yet.

I never said Final Fantasy had to be kept out of this.

I'm also going to give my vote to Ocarina of Time's overworld theme. So adventurous! So bold! So beautiful! :'D
Other games with amazing themes are basically all Nintendo games, most square games (Chrono and Secret of Mana), and the Castlevania series.
There are of course a lot of other games out there with great music. I'm probably forgetting to mention some, which bothers me. I love all of you, video game themes! :3

I think...it would have to be the main Final Fantasy theme...the thing about it is it is used throughout Final Fantasy I but I have heard it played in FFXII which really surprised me so yeah I think it is a great piece(and if anyone wants to know...I am composing an arrangement for a concert band from a piano piece of the main theme of Final Fantasy, so if anyone wants it when I'm done, just go ahead and ask!!!)

I absolutley love the SSBB theme song it's totally awesome. And I think it's sung in Latin. I love Latin.

I like the Wild Arms theme.

I would definatly have to say that the halo 3 theme, SSB brawl theme, and battlefield: bad company themes pwn all others out of the sky. =D Especially BF's, because its very interesting for an FPS to have a theme song played by a quartet rather than a full orchestra.

The best theme for a game would be a, IMO, a toss-up between the Lost Odyssey Main Theme, or the Onimusha 3 Main Theme. Both awesome.

The Fire Emblem theme is good. It was amazing when I heard it fully orchestrated on the Gamecube series after listening to it on the Gameboy Advance.
