I was put in piano lessons when I was three. I don't know any better. It's just a part of life.

They don't. I'm guessing a mod moved these threads here from their original location (which would've been the wrong place to put them).

I like music because it clears your mind of everything that's going on around you~ Either playing or listening..... :heh:

Same here, I was put in piano lessons at a young age too. (4 or 6 yrs old, don't remember) If the store I took my lessons at didn't close down, I could have been good. @_@ Oh well. I like playing cello better anyway. XD Learning the guitar is gonna be fun too. =D

Anyway, I guess I just like music because I've been doing it practically my whole life. In fact, I like music so much that I wanna make music for video games as a career! :D Plus, its fun to be loud and obnoxious (sp?) and play quadrillion triple forte. XD

1.)To have something to do.
2.)A good language to learn.

I really have a lot to say why I love music, but it started at an extremely young age. It wasn't classical, nor did I continue on from there; when I was as young as an infant, I used to bop to the tempo and rhythms perfectly. We found out that I was legally deaf, from a large build up of wax from my birth. I could only hear very deep sounds and could 'feel' sound better than literally hear it. (This explains why I absolutely love low, rich sounds so much, and how I love to feel the music.. well, who doesn't? But to me, it's extremely satisfactory.) Well, we put tubes in my ears and emptied out that gunk, so I could finally hear!

So, from there, I began to learn how to speak and understand words. (to a child's extent of course. XD) My older teen-brother were really into bands like The Who and The Doors. I would listen to songs and pick up the lyrics after a few times of listening to them, and sing along with them.. with 'musical-gestures-acting' in all. XD I was the entertainer of the family. You think I'd be put in SOMETHING music related, but I was not. I even used misc. items from around the house and made my own drum kit/s. I, apparently, could keep beats and copy drummers extremely well (Another explanation from my "copy-cat" style).

And then, I went into elementary school, in which I picked up the marimba and keyboards very well. Everything right on and then some. Still no music training. =/ Everyone always told me and my family that I have something related to music, but due to my schoolwork habits, we didn't really go on to having a private/lesson music education. And it wouldn't be until half-way through 7th grade until I did. The summer of 6th to 7th grade we had picked up a keyboard, in which I progressed; playing the songs it taught you, with an expressionate touch.. as far as the keyboard will give anyone. XD We didn't know if this was a phase or what, so we didn't invest in a piano, but we found a free one (Acrosonic Baldwin; the same piano I practice at home with today). Well, I progressed even more. We came to the conclusion that I had a talent for all of this; we looked into lessons and-long story short-we found my first piano teacher and he was absolutely perfect. He made me progress extremely quickly, tackling technique and artistic matters all at once. He worked with me very well, and made me appreciate music so much more than I already have. After 2.5 years of taking lessons, I had surpassed his teaching abilities (which is hard to do; he's very, very connected with music and everything). By luck, I had met my current teacher, Dr. Stephen Swedish, who has been teaching me since September of '07. Once again, he has instilled the love for music (both performing and listening) and the love for the piano.

I'm sorry that this turned into an autobiography more than an explanation, but I feel that I love music just that much more, because I was never thrown into anything, if even, kept away from it. It always intrigued me, and then it sent me into states of mind and soul which only the art of music could throw me into; it strikes me in such a way that music is just like breathing (which does tie to playing music, literally). I feel and sense the music breathing and as a living thing; I love music, because it's real and you can spend time with it just like another person or thing. Music is my life's passion, just as living and loving it and the people around you.

^ I agree with you!
you can make that story into a movie ^_^

me... i used to hate music because i was forced to learn the piano, cousins started to learn the piano so mum made me learn it as well. I didnt like it back then cos i thought it was boring and i had a really boring teacher, but then she passed away and i was passed on to her daughter. Her daughter is awesome and she made music interesting! I used to think that music was like maths or english in school which i have to learn and get good grades. :\

But now! Music is awesome!!! :D

I was brought up on music, seeing as how my dad could play a few instruments and compose himself. My parents told me how I wouldn't eat as a baby unless music was being played. There's a picture of me as a 1 year-old blowing into a harmonica. I guess what I'm trying to say is, it's a part of me. I just understand it. And when I'm listening to a particularly good piece, it just fills me up with happiness.

i like it because its the perfect language. you can say anything you like with it, and it just feels right...

i put myself into music, i didn't really have any push for learning... and sometimes i do procrastinate on learning and practicing... i don't have too much inspiration these days... but i try and play something everyday...

music is the means i use to escape from myself. i find myself a hard person to have to generally exist as and music helps me forget who i am. i can easily play for a good 4 hours straight without even noticing the time; its all an adventure- especially with the kind of music i like best, you sit down at the piano and travel through the whole spectrum of time, space and emotion.

i could never live without music. and anyone who doesnt feel this cant call themselves a musician. you could take anything else away from me, even family and friends, and as long as i had music i would survive. given the choice between music and anything else, i would choose music.

Think 'bout it.

who doesn't like music at all? Even though they listen to it every day, and i do mean everyday.

Well i do. Music brings up everything 'bout one person itself personality. It brings up emotion... like those fugitive language y'know.

When I was around 10 my dad asked me if I wanted piano lessons and i said nah.
When I was around 14 my dad asked me if I wanted piano lessons and i said nah.
When I was around 15 my dad asked me if I wanted piano lessons and i said YEAH!

Now i wish i had started earlier! :P

The reason I like music, anyone can learn it. Without a doubt IMO, its the most beautiful language ever to be thought of.

unless you particuarly wanted to be like the typical personality deficiant Chinese pianists who began lessons at 2 and could play all 24 Chopin Etudes at double speed before they could walk, then it really doesnt matter what age you start.

the piano will be in your life for as long as you get enjoyment out of it ^_^

That was rather hurtful
but true nonetheless. I dont think its just Chinese, most Asians, in fact Japanese and Koreans most notably. Still, even though we start music from young(for me its 6) most of us stop the first chance we had, round 12 to 13.

I didn't stop mostly because i felt proud to be able to play the violin. I remember taking my Grade8 ABRSM wen i was 13 and when i passed, i just flipped. :) And know, when i play those super fast songs just for kicks, i look at my fingers fle across the fingerboard, and i go "Woah! Are those my fingers???" and when i hear what i play, it sounds like that CD i have! so for me its just those reasons why i play music i guess...

I always loved music, and I decided to play the flute when I was four and did start when i was six. I don't remember what it's like not having lessons twice a week, being able to be with friends without telling them "Sorry, I've got to practise for the concert on Saturday and then do my homework"... No, it's not that I don't remember. I don't know what it's like. @_@
When I first got to know I had something wrong with my lungs, I cried alot because I didn't know if i would be able to play the flute anymore, so apparantly it's so much part of my life, it's a part of me. It turned out it wasn't more serious than asthma (not too serious, but worse enough to give me a hard time breathing at home), so I can still play.
But I'd rather loose my eyesight, ability to stand, anything (!) than the ability to play the flute. Because my flute is my one and only love. :heh:

But why do I like it...? 'cause I can express myself, maybe? Because I don't know better? XD Or maybe because music has been my only friend through some relally tough years I've had...

im sorry, i didnt mean it to be hurtful at all

just since ive started doing piano competitions its something i feel really strongly about. not just the Chinese as you say, but every such case regardless of nationality. the reason i always think Chinese is because the child im thinking of is Chinese.

when i see a six/seven year old girl get up on stage and play post grade 8 repertoire from memory without any expression in her face, body or music i find it quite sinister. she even won the one competition and still her face could have competed with a porcelain doll for lifelessness.

there's nothing wrong with starting an instrument like you did at 6; when you are 6, everyone wants to play something and most of them give up when they reach high school. its the ones that you can imagine being tied to a piano at 6 months and not being breastfed until they have memorised the Liszt Sonata. extreme example but hopefully you get the point?

yea i get your point. well i suppose its mostly China Chinese that do those kinda extreme acts.:\ even for the olympics. gosh, a bunch of freaks @_@ Thats one of the reasons why i dont really like China much.

Hmm, wish I could say the same about trumpet... I can't seem to find a proper place to play it, not in an organized band or anything, because that'd be too restricting, but just to blast away whatever song/music pops into my head... Recieved complaints from my neigh boors already about trumpet noises =(

I like music because it's fun, and there are so many varities of music to explore. Smooth songs soothe the soul. Fast songs race the mind. I could go on and on. Music is just so amazing! :)

A few years ago, I was going through tough times in my life... and in order to help me get through all of them, I used music. I played clarinet for 300 min time intervals during one of those years (straight, no breaks), and started composing what emotions I was going though. To me, I know I wasn't doing so well, even after composing for three years and learning orchestration. I thought it was theory that had gone all over my head and taken over my creativity, but the fact was that I had literally lost myself during the time in which the event started... and to the ending of it (for about three years)... I was unable to heal from the event until recently, and since then, I've been asked to compose for many things: unusual ensembles, large ensembles, and I've been able to do what I've wanted to do for so long: putting my emotions to music. And... although I am a sophomore, I auditioned into the top High School band. Where I go from here, I don't know...

Aren't there ways to soundproof a room so that other's outside don't hear?
Also marching bands or big bands are nice blasting groups.

Wow! Every one's stories are all so touching and personal! I wish mine was like that. :heh:
I can truthfully say that the day I stop doing something musical, I will be dead. Not because music is my only reason for living or whatever, it's because music is like breathing or a heartbeat: I couldn't stop it if I tried. If I'm not either drumming my fingers on whatever surface, I'm attending concerts in my head. It's great because I'm never bored! Music is just too much fun!

WOW!
some of you started really early on piano..
i started 2 years ago... when i was 11 and i wanted to play myself.. (not forced)
and i enjoy music because... errmmm... it brings light to my life... and i feel bad..listening to other people play on youtube..because they are much better than I am.. some are just around 16 and already made a very well done composition while i can't even transcribe but some how they also inspire me to practise more..so i could be better and i enjoy a challenge in my life.. I'm also trying to teach myself guitar..although it's pretty hard since i don't even have a guitar.. and i'd like to start the voilin too.

Where to start... Music keeps my sanity. Things are really rough at home, and music is the only thing that soothes me enough to forget where I am, and how things are. Ever since I can remember, my sister has played flute. I loved how it sounded, and knew then that flute is what I wanted to play. When I got into the 5th grade, I finally got the chance to join band class. The band teacher had us in a room, and try the mouthpieces for different instruments. Then we wrote on a sheet our top three choices. But me, I already knew I wanted flute, and I made that clear on my sheet. I wrote on it that all I wanted was flute, and that if I didn't get it I wouldn't be in band. Luckly, flute is what I got. When I was in 6th grade, my sister was a senior, and taught me a piece from her last Winter Concert. She told me that I sounded just like a high school flute player. For some reason, during 8th grade, I just got lazy and didn't do so well, almost as if I had forgotten why I loved flute in the first place. But that summer, Marching Band season began. It sparked my love once again. I was awarded Most Improved Woodwind, because even though I struggled at first, my love for flute made me gain motivation to work a ton harder, and I got so much better. Now as a freshman in high school, I'm 1st chair flute in my concert band. I improved even more. Even though the Wind Symphony (top band at our high school) is for Juniors and Seniors mainly, my band director told me that I could join. I can't even begin to express how happy that made me. For over a year now, I've been depressed, but my love for flute is what's keeping me going. Whenever something happens, I just hide in my room and play my heart out. It's the only thing anymore that brings me true happiness.

Deadly Love

I come from a family of musicians. Well, really, it's only my generation thus far that are all musicians, but yeah. I was exposed to music at a really young age, and I actually recall some of my memories from 11 or 12 years ago. I remember myself singing at about the age of 2 or 3.

My love for music waned slightly when I was forced to play the clarinet for the school band when I was in 4th grade. I got frustrated with it... mainly because I'm really no good with any instrument that comes with a reed.

It became stronger than ever, however, when I began to play the flute in 6th grade. It was a lot simpler to play, and I learned quite easily. I played that throughout the entire 6th and 7th grade, but was forced to quit when 8th grade started because my family wanted me to focus in my education even more (if that was even possible).

I did begin to play the guitar at around late November of last year though, and I loved it. I'm quoting someone right now:

i can easily play for a good 4 hours straight without even noticing the time

I played the electric guitar (no pick) for like, 3.5 hours straight without even noticing. It only felt like 20 minutes to me. I kind of noticed though... when my fingers started aching like hell and feeling really numb.

Anyways, yeah. Music is one of the few ways I can express myself. I can always seem to find a song that would match my mood, and I'll just sing along to it. (I'm more of a singer, really, but I play too.) If the lyrics don't go well with my mood though, I just find the piano version, if available, and listen to that. Music is one of my few sanctuaries. It's something that's always been with me through thick and thin, and it will always be there with me, wherever I go, whenever I need it. Music is one of the few reasons why I'm still here.
