Whenever I try to open a midi file it gives me a bunch of whole notes and even if i set the tempo to 999 it doesn't sound right...

How should I have my midi settings?!

Sounds like your quantization settings are too high. Go to MIDI > Quantization settings... and make sure that it is set to something like a sixteenth note or thirty-second note.

I've got it running on 16th notes

It actually makes it worse....
