I mostly agree with Meim on this matter. The propaganda generated against China isn't all as accurate as people would like you to believe, and much of it coming from the Falun Gong, which is a religious cult deeply affiliated with politics.

But hygene standard in China does warrant some consideration, although I hear that's been the focus of the Olympic organizers in China for the past few years now, so it should probably exceed our expectations.

Erm, whether China is capitalistic or not has nothing to do with it. I mean that China's a dictatorship and anyone who criticizes the government risks being put in jail or put to death.

Freedom of speech is something they don't know in China. Access to information, like, try looking up specific wikipedia pages while you're in China. Ones that could make the government look bad. You won't get to them.

No no no, China is NOT a dictatorship. It was quite a few decades ago, but now it's somewhat like the political system in the US. Same with the whole freedom of speech and criticism of government beliefs. These are outdated beliefs of China that held true like half a century ago, but not anymore. People get jailed if they riot, but not for the typical verbal criticism most people are familiar with. I have not heard of anyone getting put to death for such trivial matters.

Mind you, I'm not saying that the freedoms in China is equivalent to that in western countries, but it's also much better than people's impressions.

I'm unsure about the internet limitations, but as far as I can tell China's internet community is extremely vibrant and for the most part unlimited, and internet Chinese media accessible to everyone constantly bring forth various problems the public perceives in the Chinese society. It would seem odd that English wikipedia pages would be filtered out while criticism in the native language remains untouched.

Regarding freedom of speech, it's not like any country in the world have full freedom of speech. America limits disorderly conduct within vicinity of funeral events, for example. Although views in China are more conservative than elsewhere, it's still a far cry from 0 freedom.

Finally, if China indeed has such a government controlled society, they would not allow so many people to emigrate into other countries, because it would severely threaten their oppression attempts. It would be like North Korea, where influx and outflux of people are scarce.

I highly doubt it's a case of brainwashing, having lived in China and North America for almost equal amounts of time, I can conclude quite a bit from comparisons of lifestyles, and as far as I can tell, not much is different. A few more trees over here maybe =)

I think we must define a dictatorship in that case. I don't consider any political system where the chief in command changes on a regular basis to be a dictatorship. Additionally, there are systems of checks and balances in the government as well, much like, although probably inferior, to the system in the west.

olympics and politics don't go together, if you wanna boycott China do it some other time. Yeah the world knows Chinese civil treatment sucks balls but it's not just Tibet that's poor or anything, there's way too many people to give welfare like those in Europe.
In addition why don't people boycott Olympics in America? Didn't they take Hawaii against their will and over populate it with Westerns? By not attending the opening ceremony you appease the people who think that their opinion actually matters (despite it not [stfu, Richard Gere!]) and you don't force the athletes to give up four years of their life. People think athletes are these grossly overpaid people like base/foot/basketball players. They're NOT. They struggle and fight for a living, and for someone who honestly has no idea what the deal is to say "I think we should boycott..." is just horrible. If you want athletes to boycott, give up your job for four years. No, more than that, because if I decided now that I wanna go to the 2012 Olympics, I couldn't.

It's disgustingly greedy to want the athletes to have to give up their hopes, dreams and livelihood, to prove a point that wouldn't even be properly proven!

That said, my favorite events are swimming (yum, men in speedos) and Javelin (my dad's sport).

Im not saying China has the best civil structures but its also not like they're trying to specifically attack the Tibetian. And think about why Tibet wants to be free and it's pros and cons, freeing Tibet has been a long hard subject for China but in the Tibeteans favor really, if they detach themselves from the Chinese there goes their economic and even agricultural necessities, cos gosh knows the US wont help if they do it'll be pretty dumb since the war in iraq drained the living hecks out of the economy and really, how much help could European nations be.

And it's not even the subject of the Tibetian could support themselves like the turks did or something. The actual land cant really be cultivated, plus all the economic buildings belong to the Chinese, they arn't industrialized, and they are a part of China culturally being that they highly represent the Chinese Buddists which a large portion of han Chinese is.

Torch relay's gonna be going through here tomorrow. Lots of hype. Mostly, it's just causing annoyance! Hopefully there's not too much trouble though.

Watched a little of it on Sunrise this morning. Last years Australian of the year ran (walked) with it.

I went to the torch relay today. Loooots of Chinese people, completely outnumbered any protestors (it's funny because most of the pro-Tibet supporters weren't actually Tibetan and I seriously doubt they knew exactly what they were protesting about). There weren't large scale disruptions like overseas, and went pretty smoothly. The final route wasn't changed and it was a generally pretty good overall feeling. I had a good time. It felt like the Olympic spirit is camoing back, if a little bit battered.

Yes... they take it quite seriously as a chance to dispel some myths about the country as well as establish themselves as a future tourist hot spot. Although I'm sure any city that hosted the Olympics in the past has also spent quite a bit getting ready.

Hehe, there's always a degree of bias when it's judging rather than simply comparing times or something. That's why there are judges from different countries in the first place.

Anyways, I stopped caring about the scores after a while and just decided to enjoy watching people screw up.

one chinese gymnast didn't plant on the vault cleanly, which is a deduction, then as a result couldn't quite finish her rotatons and flips and thus landed on her KNEES, (emphasis on knees), and still got over a 9, i think she got a bronze medal, yeah she got a bronze...
now i very much believe china dominated the gymnastics, they clearly were the better team, but some of the scores were questionable

and my $20 is about to become $220 for china winning olympics. :mellow:
