I need help, its harder for me to compose a song than to play the violin :heh: so could someone give me some details on how i could learn? Im trying to make a composition with Violin, Cello, and Viola (a large viola part, seeing that my class only has one viola...), and i need to write it before June

Well, I just recently started making music, and what I did was pretty simple. Instead of wasting your time staring at a blank finale screen for hours on end, only to put in a few notes a day, just try to think of a few bars of music that you think might sound good, then put it in on finale and polish it up. If you have a laptop, you should definatly load finale or whatever composing software you use onto it so you can put any music you think of into it during the day. The first song I ever did was something that I thought of at school, and kept thinking about it all day so I didn't forget what it sounded like. :heh: Hey, you gotta start somewhere, right? XD

Hey, fellow violinist here =D
I started by learning the theory.
If you study hard, then I find it easy to apply it to my own work.
To me, as well as music being an expression of creativity, it's also all about getting the numbers right, like one huge logic problem that if you unravell then you get music.
It's always easier to solve logic problems with a method, and theory providesthe basis for this method.
It also helps to go to your local library and see if they stosk any string quartet music in teir music section, then you can get a feel for the sort of techniques composers use when they write for a group of strings.
I usually write all the main points from my studies of composers works down, so that I can easily refer to them withought having to rifle through mountains of sheet music ^_^
Good luck!

You can start by reading the first few pages of composers general chat. That actually started out as a bunch of lessons in composition for beginners, and then morphed into chat.
