View Full Version : An evil musical director

I started a pit orchestra at my school for the play charlie and the chocolate factory and i arranged all the music and i got next to no credit for it, and the orchestra didnt either. The director craw fish (thats what we called her) was so mean and all she did was scream at us! I was fed up with her and i wanted a little more credit than my name just being in the program so me and the pianist in the orchestra took a bow on the final show, and craw fish stormed out.
I need opinions, did i do the right thing by taking a bow and getting credit or not?

I think everyone deserves credit. Lemme guess. She's really old?

Haha, that's awful of her! =D Did you guys actually tell her that you wanted more credit? If you did, and she said no, then, heck, although what you guys did wasn't completely justified, I would have done it without a second thought.
Ahh, the horrors of pit band. At least our previous ones got to wave at the end of the show. The members also had their bios posted outside the auditorium. I'm not sure how this year's gonna work out for us, since we actually have a pit orchestra, which was bigger than the previous drum-bass-guitar-piano set. Well, the senior members get their bios posted...dunno what else.
Haha, were there any "consequences" to that bow? XD

I agree with Elwe.
Of course your opinion may be subjective rather than objective. I don't know, just food for thought.

I wasn't punished at all, in fact she was the only one who was angry

Why would you want any more credit than your name in every program? Do you seek praise in writing/arranging music?
I'm not taking a side or accusing you. Just wanted to know.

I think to a certain degree, everyone wants recognition for their work, and most people just aren't brave enough to admit it in fear of being labeled as selfish or attention seeking, etc.
I learned to not do anything extra for my school band unless the director is someone I genuinely like. Although I don't think you're in the wrong for taking a bow, it's band directors' nightmare for something to go unaccording to plan.

well she wasnt even the band director she was a guidance counselor that had a degree in music and used to be a music teacher and no one would hire her because she was so bad

what the? she wasnt even your band director? wow! haha! LOL!
well, i guess you did deserve credit although when working in a band or a group you kinda have to accept that you may not receive the full credit you deserve.
BUT HEY! you deserve to take a bow! you arranged the music! if taking a bow and letting everyone know that you played a big part in this made you happy then you did the right thing! ^_^

The only problem I imagine by doing this on your own is that no one in the audience will have a clue on why you bowed in the first place...

Unfortunately, my opinion is that you already got the credit you deserve. You don't need any more. No professional arrangers really do come on stage to take a bow now do they?

As Infinity said, no professional arrangers would really do that. But if it made you happy, i guess it's alright.

well yeah i know, it wasnt formal or even like the usual arranger. I enjoyed doing it I thought it was u kno about time i gota little more credit than just all music arranged by some random kid that no one really knows.

Well, the difference is that most professional arrangers get economical compensation for their work, so recognition is only an added bonus. Perhaps demanding to be appreciated isn't the best way to go in this case, but then again the director should feel a little obligated to do more than just put your name on the program.
