View Full Version : [Competition] Piano Trascribing - Part 1

I thought this may be a good idea to spark some good old competition among our transcribing community.

I have an idea of how to run this, but I need to know if there is any interest in doing this.

I have a few anime/game piano arrangements that would be quite interesting to transcribe. Basically if there is enough interest in this competition, we'll move to another thread and I'll post the MP3. The transcriber that is the closest to the sheet in a few categories such as dynamics, note spellings, aesthetics, etc. wins.

Leave a message in this thread if you would like to participate.

PorscheGTIII, thank you for organising some fun for fellow transcribers.

sounds interesting, but i wish i had time for this >o< (requesters would probably shout at me for not doing the requests before doing random stuff...)

anyway i am not great at transcribing things that i am not familiar with, so i will pass. (and as usual i dont put any notations apart from notes on my scores, so i should automatically lose ^_^')

hope you guys have fun though. [would be interesting to see a few different transcriptions of the same thing. XD - although most of the time it is not really possible to judge which one is better.]

Check the title, Porsche :)

I think I will participate, but I don't have enough time now :/
When is it supposed to start? And how long? ^^

By the way, for the aesthetic, I think it's unfair, because personally, I don't have full control on the sheet music that PMX generates.
I enter something like:

Crap, I forgot the "n" in transcribing.

So, we've got one maybe. Time can be VERY flexible on this. Heck, the competition can go on for 6 months as long as we get a good turn out.

@Jill-Jênn: Wow. Damn. Why don't you just use Finale or Sibelius like a normal person. XD

Piano?....yeah.....not my type of thing...I'll definitely come last.
Thx for the invite anyway Porsche x]

Unless you insist on me competing x]...

Hello PorscheGTIII, thanks for the invite :D I'm a bit busy at the moment though, so I'll pass for now.

InfinityEX, you don't want to give it a try at least? (I did share my ultimate secret weapon with you, after all-- looks like I created a MONSTER ;))

Crap, I forgot the "n" in transcribing. You can edit your first post, it will change the title, I think.

@Jill-Jênn: Wow. Damn. Why don't you just use Finale or Sibelius like a normal person. XDIt's actually faster when you don't have a lot of lines to transcribe :)

i should automatically lose ^_^'

Anywho, even if you are busy, we can be flexible about this!

Heh, I'm flattered to be invited, but my piano transcribing skill is roughly equal to that of a monkey's. So unfortunately for you, InfinityEX, I'll be stealing your last place =)

Anyways, if there's a good amount of people willing to participate, I'll come along too.

Secret weapon? To transcribe a piano recording to perfection?

Let's see... Headphones? Audio recognition software? Music theory? Audio editing software? Melodyne? How to achieve perfect pitch? What? Ah ha so that's your secret. Relying on hardware and software to make your life easier Josh. Or maybe it's those Mangekyou sharingan ears of yours. Psh I can do that >_>

i am sure a secret weapon that makes life easier is always a good thing^^ (otherwise would be pointless if it were not used. anyway would be nice if it could be shared though XD - no pressure on that.)

Bah... I gave away my secret weapon.<_<

Yay it's piano. I'm so good at it. I've done some transcriptions of piano recordings and they turn out extremely accurate. One song though was a pain in the ass. An amateur should really stay away from anything that uses notes greater than 16th notes. Before I join, how long is it? How hard is it? And It better be in high quality. Plus I like a recording that's performed by the pianist. Not synth like piano sounds in midi.

Oh yeah what kind of reward do we get?

Ohhhhh... WOW... I finally realized Josh's avatar is a Sharingan ear. Hahaha! Brilliant!

Hmm, speaking of hardware... I used to have a headphone extension cable that had some connection issues, and it would almost completely shut off any main melody of whatever song I'm listening, leaving only the background stuff... Too bad like a day or two later it completely broke down and now I can't hear anything =(

Quick go buy a $200+ headphone with an amp. The two most accurate neutral analytical headphones are Beyerdynamic DT 880 and AKG701. They're the best headphones for transcribing. As for the amp, to get the best quality go for a tube amp. I don't know what brand though, still looking...

OR you can donate me some money and I'll be happy to buy them for you cuz every audiophile needs one of those :shifty::cracker:

Ara ara! Yes, I'm sure you can ^^

As for the "secret weapon" thing, it's not that much of a secret actually, I've mentioned it here at least once before... check out the "Transcribe" link here (http://forums.ichigos.com/showpost.php?p=278727&postcount=15).

I've pretty much outgrown it by now though, 2000 years of experience does count for a little after all *waves giant flaming sword*

Great! More people to join the fun! Of course the song will be a bit difficult, or at least I hope it is. XD

Nice josh, now I don't feel bad about admitting I too use a WAV to MIDI converter. XD I had looked into using transcribe! also but I may give it a try.

fourier analysis ^o^ stereo cancellation ^o^

but doesn't the human ear acts as a much better filter usually? it is truely amazing that a good software is so hard to make, but the human ear just does the job well naturally :)

Concerning .mp3/.wma/video transcription, I just use my ears and input them into Finale 2008. xp When is this competition starting?

PorscheGTIII
May 24th, 2008, 12:23 am
Well since we can be VERY flexible, I'd like to know the time frame that everyone feels that they can finish a piano piece that's 1:38 long (I think just from listening to it that it will be the most fun you've had in 1:38 XD).

Gotank
May 24th, 2008, 02:27 am
That could vary anywhere from a few hours to a week... All depends on the difficulty of the song. I imagine that some rhythm changes that typical piano pieces have can be especially time consuming...

I might think about participating... however, I can't figure out for the life of me how to save PDF sheet music on Sibelius 3. (Maybe I should read the manual..... naaahhh)

Also, I've got a good ear for transcribing melody and such... but not too sure how I'd do on a frilly piano piece. Regardless I've got too much on my plate as is for the summer.

Guess I'll have to turn it down then. (Tho, thanks for the heads up)
