May 25th, 2008, 04:04 pm
The competition has ended and the results are HERE (http://forums.ichigos.com/showpost.php?p=410663&postcount=91).
Here are the rules to follow for this competition.
You may only use the MP3 provided to do your transcribing from. You CAN make other files from the MP3 but you CAN NOT use and other MIDI's or someone else's work on the same piece. Don't go looking for the piece on the internet to use as guide!
The work shown must reflect YOUR WORK and YOUR WORK ONLY.
You should submit your final product in a file format that can allow page formatting to be done (ex. PDF, MUS, SIB, etc. ).
Any rule that I think of before the end of the competition that direly needs to be instated.
ALL VIOLATORS WILL BE DISQUALIFIED AND BE GIVEN UNCOOL POINTS!!!
That being said, here is what you will be transcribing. Do we have any Touhou Project fans here? Well, that's what we are transcribing from.
Title: 東方紅魔郷 月時計~ルナ・ダイアル (touhou kurenai ma sato gatsu tokei ~ runa・daiaru)
Composer: ZUN
Arraneged by: ようか (Yohka)
Copyright Team Shanghai Alice / Zune
Here is what the original sounds like. The MP3 you are transcribing from is attached below. http://youtube.com/watch?v=Mo6QfysFNV8
This is how you will be scored on. The person who scores the highest wins!
Rhythm – 40%
(____/ 30) X 40 = ____
Notes – 30%
(____/ 1724) X 30 = ____
Expression – 15%
(____ / 24) X 15 = ____
Tempo
Crescendo/Decrescendo
Key Signature(s)
Phrasing
Articulation – 15%
(____ / 270) X 15 = ____
TOTAL ____/100
Also keep in mind that I'm counting...
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h255/porschegtiii/Equal.jpg
These as the same note since they are held for the same duration.
Also, I'm counting tied notes as one note like...
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h255/porschegtiii/OneNote.jpg
Final words of advice. Take your time and have fun! May the best transcriber win!
The competition has ended and the results are HERE (http://forums.ichigos.com/showpost.php?p=410663&postcount=91).
GOOD LUCK!

Er what do we get if we win? Wait a sec. Do you have the original sheets? You need the original in order to judge for accuracy. But then if you have it, does that mean it's on the internet too? That'll ruin the fun.
Edit: Can you please PM me the high quality mp3 version for the original? Youtube sucks.
PorscheGTIII
May 25th, 2008, 10:30 pm
The MP3 is already attached in my first post and is not the youtube link.
Yes, I have the sheets of this specific arrangement. Also, if you read my post the sheets do exist online but you are prohibited from using them in any way under penalty of disqualification and uncool points.

Can you explain how can you prevent cheaters? They're not going to make it obvious. They'll probably copy it then change it so you don't find out.
Anyways, good luck to those attempting 00:21-00:41. The left hand is a bit too quiet though. I've done something much harder than that so it'll be ok for me. It kinda sounds like Etude 10-12 Revolutionary.
Gotank

Wow that's pretty tough... Atleast I don't detect too many chords =)
On the side of cheaters - this is a fun event anyways, so I don't really see the point of anyone cheating to win.

There's no prize in it so there's no point in cheating.

You should put this topic as sticky, shouldn't you?
Edit: Wow, I just listened to the piece o_O (I thought you (Porsche) were going to post a piano music ^^). That's not easy :D
Is the score expected to be playable? I mean, if you have 2-note chords (also called diads, I just saw on Google) in eighth notes, it might be difficult to play :D

Don't give up. Josh shared you his secrets. Use them. Of course... when it comes to transcriptions (not arrangements), it can be a little hard :heh: I'm still in the game, but can you extend the deadline till the end of August? I have summer classes and I don't have time to work on it.
Jill-Jênn
June 10th, 2008, 05:48 pm
Maybe end of August is a bit long... End of July seems fine (I also think end of June is a bit hard). Do you agree, brncao?
Edit: Lol I just heard the piano version, I'm wondering if it isn't even more difficult :D Is it an original piano version, Porsche, or did you make it?
That sustain pedal is confusing the whole piece :D
Edit2: It seems to be original. But where did you find it? :D

June 10th, 2008, 07:18 pm
I have finals at the end of July. College work and the semester is half of that of a normal semester schedule meaning the schedule is compressed. I prefer sometime in August.
I don't think he did make it. I'd be pissed if it wasn't an actual pianist performing that, but rather a computer generated playback with ultra-realistic piano sounds. The reason is because any arranger who arranges for piano on a software, but doesn't play it could arrange something that could be impossible. The reason it's easy to transcribe on piano is because I know its boundaries on what's possible and what's not. Oh yeah that's another secret of mine. Know the natural instruments' limitations.
Jill-Jênn
June 10th, 2008, 08:50 pm
Lol it can't be a pianist. Too accurate for that.
What boundaries are you talking about? You mean you can "guess" the left hand?
PorscheGTIII
June 11th, 2008, 12:56 am
The competition is tentatively planed to end June 30, 2008 at 11:59.99PM EST.
Talk it up guys. I thought we wanted to stop then, but whatever it takes for us to finish this will work.
1. I believe it is a computer recording.
2. It is playable just your average Joe can't play it. This guy has had the guy from ~primenotes~ play some of his stuff I believe. See this as an example... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DcjjBU-iNA0
3. The left hand is actually pretty simple. You'll kick yourself in the butt when you see it. :P
4. Like Noir7 would have said, all quiters will receive uncool points. :P
brncao
June 11th, 2008, 01:24 am
Computer recording? Aw that sucks. At least it sounds possible. I'm gonna trust the arranger.
Lol it can't be a pianist. Too accurate for that.

As in physical limitation. I've seen arrangements that make you stretch WAY over an octave. There are even arrangements that make you play beyond your pitch range and sometimes chords are used when clearly your instrument doesn't support it. Those kinds of boundaries and limitations. If you don't know them, then you'll have a very tough time arranging songs like from an orchestra. Synthesized music on the otherhand... everything's possible so it's really difficult.

I'll have to go back and look at my arrangements later and fix all these issues =(

I didn't understand you Porsche. Is it reported or not?
I'll make it with the PMX language :) You know, that code (http://forums.ichigos.com/showpost.php?p=404138&postcount=3) ^^

Gotank
June 23rd, 2008, 07:06 am
Haha, I hope no one's getting the wrong idea here from our jokes... Porsche already has the official sheet music for this particular piece, so it doesn't benefit him at all to have people transcribe it again; in fact, he's putting in effort to grade it afterwards, so it's more like a contribution from him for a bit of fun for the rest of us.
I'm not sure there will be a prize, since it's a fun event; probably just glory and recognition or whatever =)

Gotank
July 25th, 2008, 01:48 am
Speaking of fonts... Does anyone know how to write in the '~' symbol into Sibelius? Regardless of where I use it, Sibelius considers it a midi message and hides it when producing the actual sheets. I've had to replace those '~' with the much inferior '-' in the titles of like 4 transcriptions now =.=

Good News: I'm about 83% done checking everything. I have one transcription fully graded and 3/4 of the other two.
Bad News: The last section I have to check is the most time consuming.
On the Bright Side: Going into the last section the difference between 1st and 3rd place is only 5.375 points. It will be a very close one!

Thanks a lot!
I have to say what follows (because if I hadn't won you can be sure I would have said it :D): when I saw the sheet used for the correction, I remarked mistakes so I was sad (and a bit angry) because I had spent a lot of time on the bars which were wrong in the "official sheet", and PorscheGTIII said they would be removed from correction.
However, nonetheless, nevertheless (and notwithstanding too) (I'm studying English), PorscheGTIII has already spent a lot of time on organizing this contest and on correcting (fortunately there weren't many contestants), so thank you, PorscheGTIII :)
Let's go back to hol... work ;)
