Well I had an interesting dream last night. In it this stranger taught me a little song on a piano in a bookstore. I have had dreams before with music but never one that I actually played a song on a instrument. The song he taught me was actually a duet (he played the main part and I played a less interesting two-fingered "chopstick-ish" melody over it) but I only remember a few measures of my part. I attached it for your listening enjoyment! :) The interesting part is that I have never composed anything like this before and actually I try to avoid this particular sound.
So my questions are, has any of you had dreams with music, and what do you think makes our subconscious compose certain pieces?

I dream really, really beautiful pieces. I always wake up thinking, "I have to write this down! NOW!" So I run over to my desk, find a pencil and paper, and.. have by that time forgotten what it was... :(

Of course, there's always the question of whether it was actually good or my dream self has really bad tastes :heh:

Anyway, I've been having these dreams since I took art of composition last year. Our instructor always expected us to have something ready to go over in class, so I was sometimes really stressed out about coming up with something. So maybe musical dreaming is caused by.. music-related stress? Haha :heh: But even though I still like to compose, I'm not really worried about it. So probably just sitting down & trying to compose something makes you dream about it (your brain works super hard even when you're asleep! Haha.. xD). I dunno.

Anyway.. that's pretty good for having composed it in your sleep! Haha

I do believe I have composed music in my sleep before, or sometimes in daydreams while laying in my bed, but I too forget them before I can write them down. It truely is frustrating, though I can do nothing about it. I'm glad that we musical intellectuals can talk about silly things like composing in dreams though, aren't you? We can be so proffessional sometimes and it's good to take a break and rething idle thoughts.

Yeah I have too, also, some of the best stories I've written were things that I dreamt about.

Its great using dreams, requires no concious thought or imagination =D

Hmm, I dreamt about a piece that was really similar to this one o.0
Are you sure you weren't listening to too much Handel, Bach, or Mozart?
Wait, I'm just wondering, but didn't Mozart compose something similar to that?

Yeah I thought it kinda sounded familiar too. But lately it's been all jazz in my listening diet and no Mozart!

I hate the concept of dreaming compositions, or anything of the like. If you're supposed to write every idea that pops in your head, then I should be sitting in a corner somewhere the entire day with a large book of staff paper.

It's fun to dream compositions, but far too often people forget them. It's sad, and cursedly.
