Schubert once said something to the effect of " Composers write out rhetorical conversations in a way that nobody thinks of them as odd.

My point is that every piece of music tells a story, so the open ear can never have a favorite.

Simply put, the Arabasque by whomever is my favorite. I just have a thing for strong minor music. Love the solid left hand in the piano ver. of the song

I seem to have a strong pull towards baroque or romantic pieces.not a real fan of classical though.

Anything with great melodical value. If I keep humming the song or if it's stuck in my head, that means it's very good.

Which is probably why I prefer oriental composers.

the type of classical music that I like is classical music. Doesn't matter which time period. I don't care, I doubt I can tell who lived in who besides the basics - bach-baroque, etc.

I've always liked Schubert (especially his simpler pieces), and Chopin I was initially attracted to his more technical stuff (like the 24 Etudes), but have grown to like him for other stuff as well (he writes really great ternaries for one).

And y' know, I used to not care much at all for most of Bach's preludes and fugues, but after analyzing a few in detail, I have a newfound respect and fondness for them (especially the fugues). By the way, for those interested, this website has a neat "interactive" analysis of the fugues from the Well-Tempered Clavier: http://www2.nau.edu/tas3/wtc.html.

Ravel, Debussy, (Edward) Elgar, Copland, etc. mainly for orchestration and other things that I can't describe.

Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Liszt, Chopin, Rimsky-Korsakov, Debussy, Ravel, Rachmaninoff, Stravinsky.

No particular order, maybe just oldest-youngest.
