Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, I don't really know where to put it. :heh:

Anyway, I have started to seriously think about being a video game music composer/audio director when I'm older. The problem is, I don't really know how to go about doing that. :heh: I understand I have a long way to go before my music is even good enough to go to college for composition, but I don't really care waiting a year or two to go to college if it means making my music better. :P

I've thought of joining a site like audiogang, (site for video game music composers and people aspiring to be one) but I don't have $50 a year to spend on that membership. XD To add to my list of problems on this issue, I'm not even sure what kind of degree(s) in college I would need for this. x_x That's kind of a problem considering I'm starting to visit colleges this year, so if anyone could help me, that would be appreciated.

You can start by composing music for indie games and freeware games. You may start doing works without getting paid but it will help you to grow and maybe with time you will hit a work where you can get paid. You should also think of an alternative bachelor apart of music, just in case you find yourself in a not so good situation. If you want to make music for the media, I would recommend to study music composition. And to learn about the music production and audio design.

Here you can find some FAQs that Nathan Madsen did(on youngcomposers forum) for people have an understanding:

http://www.youngcomposers.com/forum/starting-your-career-composer-sound-designer-faq-15836.html

This site is mostly dedicated to video games and people doing indie games:
http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/
http://www.bigbluecup.com/yabb/index.php <--forum from the same site (There are also tune contest and other kind of contests constantly).

This other you may want to take a look:
http://www.gamedev.net/

Also something very important is to have connections! To let people know that you make music! Because no matter how good you are, if you don't have a stable work in-house and you are working freelance you will have hard times to find a new project to get paid. So, to meet lots of people that work in different fields can help! And to have a personal website where you can show music demos and information about you.

By the way if you decide to go for a Music composition Bachelor, you will need to show a portfolio of music you have done. (I am not sure if is like that in all universities and colleges).

hmm...
how about working at RPG Revolution Forum?
it's full of RPG projects (RPG MAker VX)
the working ppl there are always looking for composers
and when you become composer for their games
you'll be needing an assistant like arranger, editor, and etc

there you can already feel the fun in composing music for games ^^
I haven't gamdev, adventuregames, and bigbluecup. I think I'm going to check them out now.

btw, at RPG Revolution
there are plenty of projects in there
some are real project where they will pay you (paypal or mastercard) for contributing.
but I prefer newb or normal project since it's your first time rite?

I know networking is important, but there's just one slight problem...I really can't network. I'm not 18 yet, so I can't go to any of the conventions like CES to meet people yet. I'm sure audiogang would work too, but I think it would give a better impression if I met people in person. :heh:

Actually remizen, I was thinking of buying FPS creator 10 so I can make my own games as well as the music in it to get my work out there. =D It's just about getting the money for that and a 4 year audio gang membership that is hard. xD But the place you mentioned sounds pretty cool, do you happen to have a link so I can go check it out?

I know that there are college classes for computer music composition which specializes in using computers to make music; mp3, midi, etc. It's all for incorporating that in movies/games or maybe even commercials. Good luck with this.

Oh, I know that too, I already know where I am going for game audio after high school. :heh: I just need to find another school for music composition and I'm all set. xD
