It's out tomorrow!
Is anyone else excited to try it out?
I'm looking forward to it, even though it looks like Vista SP3, to me. =D

Let's talk about it here when it launches tomorrow...

Apparently it looks like Vista, but the actual engine is completely different.

We shall see...

No, it's an improved Vista. The driver model is the same, for instance. It's supposed to be fully compatible with Vista. I want it I want it I want it! :(

Exactly what I heard. Some people were saying "IT'LL STILL BE BROKEN UNLESS THEY DO A COMPLETE REWRITE."

My thought to that is "I don't see much broken to begin with, so I'm sure I'll like it."
Gonna go look for the installer now, if I can get it...I think it's limited to the first 2.5 million installs or something.

Edit: Don't see an installer anywhere yet. Microsoft.com is still saying "come back in a bit."
Also, I just saw an interview that said if you're running Vista right now, it really will just install an update. So it really is basically SP3, hahah! Which is fine by me. I'll take any SPs microsoft wants to give me. =D
Apparently, it'll cut down on Vista's RAM usage, which would be great. It's taking up around 800Mb, which isn't a huge deal by today's standards, but if they can cut it down even more, that'd be fine by me.

Of course, if they charge as much as they did for Vista for it, when it's really only a service pack under the hood, people are going to flip out...

Edit: Ah, three hours left, lol. I keep on thinking Microsoft is stationed in Washington DC, when they're stationed in Washington the state. XD
And thanks for moving this. I actually wanted it here in the first place, but apparently I was on drugs yesterday. X3

There's nothing wrong with it now, but seeing as how MS has problems like xbox RROD and computer BSOD, we'll see. (not to mention they were the host of 2k9, with every 30 gig zune just failing for no reason XD)

I wish I could be at CES right now, but you need to be 18 to go...and the tickets are like, $120, which I don't have. :P

XP before SP -> shit
Vista before SP -> shit

and therefore 7 before SP -> shit?

dunno, gonna wait till the service pack comes out before i switch.

Well, the beta feels pretty solid. It actually feels better than Vista.

Got it up and running :D

Basically it's just Vista, but then finished.

AHH!! It's a working version of KDE4! Ultimately, though, I kinda like the new freaky startbar. Seems more effecent than the classic XP/Vista layout.

And, XKCD made a rather humors comic about windows 7 too..

No, that was pretty funny, actually. =D
I was expecting some kind of M$ world domination joke/M$ is evil joke, but we just got a regular old "Vista sucks really bad" jab at the end, so it surprised the laugh right out of me.

January 16th, 2009, 11:44 pm
Is it out yet? Because I've got 2.5 gigs of ram and Vista is still a evil cookie monster.

And my studio recording program (Cubase LE 4) requires at least 100k of memory to work correctly, and at times the program lags or skips when I play back recordings.

And I've disabled many background programs, but it seems Vista is still devouring it.

Send me a link anyone?

Windows 7...aka Vista "Take 2"

Vista was more about the animations, themes...all that fancy stuff...

Windows 7, is more focused on performance with the quality of Vista themes. :D

Who knows...Microsoft might release a new OS in 2010...instead of SP1 for Windows 7 and SP2 for Vista...
New OS could be a combination Windows 7 and Vista...finally forming a proper OS...

They better not come out with a new OS next year, I just got an HP elite with vista, and will be pissed off if I have to replace it. <_< (cause we all know that programs don't slow down for people with older technology XD)

Because service packs are what makes windows so awesome?

..so is 7 worth getting it instead of vista SP2?

Probably not at the moment. Since beta's are exactly that, beta. But pick it up if you want. I'll just wait for a more stable version.

Probably not at the moment. Since beta's are exactly that, beta. But pick it up if you want. I'll just wait for a more stable version.

Right now I'm using:

- Windows Live Messenger beta
- Windows Live Mesh Beta
- Microsoft Internet Explorer Beta
- Windows Vista SP2 beta
- Windows 7 beta

And it all works pretty good. Microsoft beta's are actually pretty stable, it's usually just functionality that doesn't work right (for example, in the messenger beta, the custom smilies didn't work). IE beta has problems with displaying websites that are aimed too much at IE6 or IE7 (yay compatibility mode though) and with Live Mesh, Vista SP2 and Windows 7 I kind of keep forgetting it's a beta.

DirectX 11 is coming soon...lets see how that works with Windows 7...
Windows 7 is expected to come out late 2009 early 2010...DirectX 11 GPU's plan to start selling before Windows 7 is released...

I have a feeling Vista SP2 isn't going to increase performance as much as we're hoping for...

Oh well...it'll be a while before something decent will pop-up, so I guess I might stick with my current config...XP desktop and a Vista Laptop.

Currently, Windows 7 has being great.

Less Internet Explorer Freezes. Less usage of Ram when playing games + better gameplay.

I hope sending them the feedbacks and errors may get me a free version of Windows 7.. I doubt it though.

32-bit Vista is faster for me than 64-bit version. It depends on the hardware, and they probably had crappy hardware.

I know this doesn't give much of an indication but directx 10 isb *just* becoming mainstream yet and they pump out 11?

ergh.. graphics development is speeding up too quickly lately. hard to get a "very, very, very, top of the line" GPU that stays that way for more than 2 months.

Why? You can install Windows 7 on any computer that runs Vista. In fact, Windows 7 should even run on lesser hardware than Vista. And you don't *have* to install Windows 7, you can keep using Vista.

Maybe he should have said "my computer won't last through college 'as it is now'".
What did Windows Vista cost when it came out, like $250? My laptop only cost me $400.
Of course, you can just not upgrade, but getting a new operating system is always so cool, it's impossible to resist. XD

That said, I don't really care if I need to upgrade in a year or so. I'm looking forward to it, actually. Upgrading is always fun, like getting a shiny new game console or something. It's exciting. =D

January 25th, 2009, 07:50 pm
Depends, Home Basic OEM is about 70 euros, Ultimate OEM is about 180 euros. In dollars that'll be about the same I think. The license you get with a laptop is usually only worth 20, although you can't transfer it to a new computer.

Yeah, getting it bundled with a new computer ends up being a good deal cheaper.
Which is why I just buy a new machine whenever I upgrade my Windows. Decent computers don't cost much nowadays, and I figure I may as well save some money on Windows while I'm upgrading, so I usually just buy a whole new system when I upgrade.

It doesn't really matter what it costs to upgrade anyway, though. I know plenty of people who are still doing fine on XP machines, so you don't really *need* to upgrade often at all if you don't want to. I usually upgrade a year or so into a new Windows release, to put off spending my money for a bit, and to make sure that all the bugs are ironed out.

I'm hearing nothing but good things about Windows 7, though, so maybe I'll upgrade right away this time.

Perhaps I'm being pessimistic here, but I have yet to see a comprehensive list of non-UI related features for Windows 7. If all I wanted was a new shell, I head over to Stardock with Vista and download a shell that still has many more features than Win7's new one has. The only one I have been able to find is the ability to mount VirtualPC images as harddisk drives(Which is nice, not sure Its worth the title of a new OS).

Where's the new databasing filesystem?
Where's the sandboxed compatibility VMs?
Where's the Sub Pixel Font rendering engine?
Where's the Realtime process scheduler?
Where's the Modularized Kernel?

These are just a few of the many things that were promised with Vista, and yet still are nowhere to be seen in Windows 7. There are quite of number things as well which should be upgrade to Vista, also of which are not Win7. I'm not saying Windows 7 won't be an upgrade from Vista, but the reality is, if you don't like Vista, you probably won't like Windows 7.

HopelessComposer

Nice, you got yourself registered! =D
I think the main thing people didn't like about Vista was its bugginess and its tendency to eat up too many resources. Both problems have apparently been fixed with W7, so Vista haters might like it, even if it doesn't have a ton of fancy new features.

Asides from the UI being new, it also feels much faster than Vista. That alone is reason enough for me to upgrade, and reason for a lot of people who don't like Vista to like Windows 7. It's just Vista, but better.

would like to know a statistical number if possible please

Neko Koneko
February 1st, 2009, 12:27 pm
It's hard to say much on the RAM issue. Both Vista and Win7 keep a large cache to speed up stuff, so most of the RAM will be in use most of the time, untill another application needs it.

People who think that Vista is just "eating" their RAM, should stay out of computer related stuff.

zippy
February 3rd, 2009, 12:17 am
Vista by itself doesen't eat your RAM, Finale does. :P Even though my computer has 8 GB of RAM, the amount of RAM finale uses is like a fat guy at an all-you-can-eat buffet. XD

Gah, my stupid sub comp keeps busting out on me with not enough memory when I try to run left 4 dead on it. Sure its only got 1GB RAM and its still got vista on it but damn.....Vista just doesn't free out enough when you need the memory, stinks. Didn't want to experiment with 7 until I was reasonably sure, but hell I know its going to use less so might as well give it a try

on a completely unrelated note, I'm working 16/7 until uni starts. hooray double shifts.

Requirements for Left 4 Dead:

OS: Windows Vista, Vista 64, XP,

CPU: 3.0GHz P4, Dual Core 2.0 or AMD64X2 (or higher)

RAM: 1 GB for XP / 2 GB for Vista

Disc Drive: DVD-ROM Drive

Hard Drive: At least 7.5 GB of free space

Video: DirectX 9 compatible video card (Video card must be 128 MB or more and should be a DirectX 9 compatible with support for pixel shader 2.0)

Sound: DirectX 9.0c compatible sound card

So, with one GB under Vista, you're screwed. I'll admit it eats more RAM than XP, but not as much as people think it does. Still, some games require 2 gig to run under Vista. Windows 7 won't be much different on this I guess.
