View Full Version : Watching the Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi

I've just able lucky enough to obtain the entirety of the series so far, via a means I would rather not mention here >_>. With my copy of the series there came a text file from the distributor detailing several ways the series could be watched. He gave the order in which the Series is presented on the DVD, how it was originally aired on Japanese television, and his own recommendation on how the series should be watched.

Before reading this document, I was prepared to just watch the series in order from episode 00 to the end, but now I am apprehensive to watching the series in the correct order. So members of Ichigo's, I ask you, in what order should I watch the Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi?


I thought this would help those who want to enjoy Haruhi in the order in which it was aired.



Below is the episode average order that below is the Japanese airing order and under that is my custom order.

(To figure it out go with the numbers so let’s say I finish episode 2 which was the aired episode 3,

then I would look on the chart to find the 4th aired episode which would be 7 so I would play that next.)



Regular Order: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13.

Airing Order: 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 13, 14, 4, 7, 6, 8, 12, 11, 9.

my custom order 9, 1, 2, 4, 12, 13, 14, 3, 5, 6, 7, 10, 11, 8.





I think my order puts the extra episode in at a better time than the others do

Long since been talked about in the original Haruhi thread, the physical order of the series is the Linear Order, otherwise known as the Kyon order. This order follows the story like the book does, keeping the Melancholy, Boredom, Rampage, and Wavering of Suzumiya Haruhi separate from one another. Given your list, that would be the Airing Order.

The order the DVDs are prepared (Haruhi order) are the same order in which they were broadcasted in Japan (English moved them all up one, as they don't like starting episode numbering with 0), which keeps the main book arc in order (Melancholy), but with the other books interjected somewhat at random. This offers a different perspective and also develops certain parts of the story a little different.

As for the way I liked the story, I preferred the Kyon order, as there wasn't much to be gained watching them in the broadcast order.


As for that custom order, WTF? That doesn't even make sense.

I saw your thread and...I don't think anyone is going to reply to this but...when I watched the show I just watched it in the order 1-13, it seems to make the show more interesting. A question too, when it came out was it called The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi or Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu(what I call it)?

Both. The first is the name used for the English release and the latter is the Japanese name.

I disagree. The airing order resulted in a much greater emotional emphasis on that one scene, even though it was hinted at. The viewer is left clueless until the very end on what exactly Kyon did to calm the fury that was Haruhi.

Also, mixing up the episodes gave it a little bit more originality and unpredictability than existing anime, especially a Higurashi-type vibe that fit in perfectly with some of the episodes.
