View Full Version : Cooperative Transcribing: The 13th Anthology [Concert Band]

I'm currently transcribing The 13th Anthology for Concert Band, but I realized not only do I not have a sensitive enough ear to hear all the instruments (and I think the MIDI are in different keys, not that there's any MIDI for Anthology as a whole). What I've attached is what I've managed to do in the course of 6 hours straight today. I'd like some help transcribing this (I'm not asking anybody to do the whole thing for me). I think some of the things I put in there are wrong, too.

The current sheet music is attached. Please ignore the Clarinet that has nothing written for it, I added in the wrong type by accident (I should have 3 Bb Clarinets but I must have clicked the wrong one).

Also please don't tell me that I should have X instrument or Y instrument or that I shouldn't have Z instrument, because I am only using the instruments that my school's concert band has.

Did you transcribe off of youtube or an mp3?

I have a copy of the MP3 at 320kbps.

you have really good ears imo. Using headphones? I would like to help, but I need to get better headphones. The studio kind because these let you hear everything in a recording. I only got crappy consumer headphones that makes the sound quality muddy. I'll see what I can do.

On second thought... You're doing it for band, not orchestra. In this case you don't have to worry about making a transcription of it. Just arrange it however way you like or whatever sounds best for a band. Are you asking because you don't know if you're missing out on some instruments in the song, or are you asking if certain notes or chords are wrong, or both?

Btw, the max interval for a piano should be at 8 or 9. That interval in measure 23-25 is physically impossible to play.

Thanks, brncao. I took off the lowest note in those two chords and it's fine. There was another one in there that I didn't even notice; I think it was a typo. I'm listening to anthology with a set of 7.1 surround speakers and I've got a pretty great sound card, so that let's you hear pretty much everything. It isn't all completely by ear, though; I'm using some harmonies and such from the MIDIs for The 13th Struggle and Organization XIII, the two songs in the beginning of The 13th Anthology, but for most of the song (in just about 30 seconds from the point I have transcribed to, actually) I won't be able to use such a reference.

The reason I'm trying to make a complete transcription is because if I tried to arrange this in my own way, I could miss out on some subtle parts of Shimomura's Drammatica arrangement that would have sounded really cool in a band. I don't want the opportunity to miss out on anything, and since there are a ton of instruments in that band piece (not counting the random Eb Clarinet), I could easily fit most if not all the parts of the original arrangement of The 13th Anthology into the band piece and adjust instrumentation and dynamics in a way that sounds nice from there.

Wish this was updated, since I REALLY want my band class to play this...

Hey, Iovis. I actually had dropped this project in favor of another temporarily. I will most likely pick it back up sometime in the spring (the deadline for my current project is January 2nd, so anytime after that, though I'll want a break because my current proj. is a very involved process (the commissioned song is very thin harmonically, and in order to make it worthwhile as an instrumental piece I have to thicken it on top of transcribing the piece)).

Hey! I know that this thread is like 4 years old, and you might not even still be on this anymore, but I really would love to have the full version of The 13th Anthology for our band at school. My band director might let us play it if I can bring him a full score. PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:cry:

I got an idea Rodents210. How about we make an orchestral transcription of it so that we're on the same page. After that anyone can rearrange it for band, strings, piano, etc.

@zarrrgon
I can do a transcription of it, abit slowly. The problem here is that you're asking for a band, and the fact that not all schools have the same instruments. What will your teacher say if you handed him an orchestral score? Ask your band director to see if he uses Finale and is willing to rearrange an entire orchestral score for band. Give him the mp3 to listen to. If he doesn't have the time to rearrange an entire score or says no then you're pretty much out of luck.

Edit: In that case... I don't feel like doing it lol.

@zarrrgon
This thread isn't even a year old yet, haha!

@brncao
I did have to drop this project indefinitely, so if you want to take your own shot at transcribing for full orchestra I can just rearrange it for zarrrgon. It would take less time than if I tried to arrange the whole thing which I just plain don't have time for.
