So, I drew this pic for a manga I'm working on...This poll will probably be up until this character enters...so, I want to know everyone's(or mostly anyways) opinion, do you think the character I drew looks like a boy or a girl? I'm not doing this to decide the gender of my character but to get more of an idea of how people would see this character rather than going "I think people will...". If possible, whoever votes, please leave a reply stating which you voted for, why, and your gender. :lol:I need everyone's honest opinion so don't randomly say whichever you want because you feel like it:lol:. (btw, my scanner added extra shading around the head, ignore that please:sweat:)

Boy. I don't see breasts. Unless is a flat one! but looks more like a boy.

Um, yes, the point of this poll was to see the opinion of people, but, it would be pointless if you don't vote. Please check 'boy' or 'girl' then press vote now to register the vote so I won't have to count up everyone's comments.

A boy because of the stern eyes. Overall outfit and hairstyle reminds me of L.

Girl, because of the shoulder width, the defined cheekbones, and the curves about the waist.

ohh dudeee...this is hard to tell,
from what im seeing, the arm on the right looks like a girl's arm
but the one on the left.. looks like a boy's arm
and the body shape looks kinda like a guy...
but then it has curvy lines at the waist sooo @_@

but err, thats me looking at it closely... i thought it was a guy at first glance

I took a good long look at it, but decided to go for my gut instinct.

Girl.

Either a boyish girl or a girlish boy. Where's the "either" option?

edit: and why would you first draw a character, then decide its gender? Usually you decide what kind of character you want, gender, characteristics, personality etc and design around that. This just seems... stupid.

It's the Square Enix method, obviously XD

No wait, Square draws females and then adapts them to males.

:lol:I know what the character's gender is but you don't, lol. I want to see what other people will think the character's gender is without me telling:lol:. Plus, I never said I needed everyone's opinion is to choose the gender.

(Why does this page have so many views but so few votes:(?)

Because I guess a lot of people can't be bothered to vote? Lol. Or they just come back to read new posts.

I personally don't think it's a very good character, too boyish to be a girl, too girlish to be a boy. Unless you intended to create a 14-year old transvestite, that would work :P

Girl because of the face, hair and curvy body. Probably an 11-year old looking tomboy kid

But if thats your character, maybe try and define it as one gender O_o

-_-I think I'm starting to get an idea on how people will look at this character...hm...need to make some adjustments... Whoever votes, if possible, please leave a reply explaining what you chose, why, and your gender. ^_^I won't(can't) force anyone and really want peoples' honest opinions, so please try to leave a reply message. If you can't, at least vote:lol:.

I think it's a girl. That said, you shouldn't need to ask people "what gender is my character?". If half the people who look at her can't even tell she's a girl, doesn't that tell you how appealing she is? The line "she looks like a man," usually isn't used to describe pretty girls. Guys who look like girls can be kind of cool, since they're usually cool-headed-and-too-badass-to-care pretty boys (a la Squeenix). It doesn't work the other way around.

So...pretty her up. You can make a tough girl character without making her look like a dude!
I'm almost certain you meant to draw a girl, yet "boy" is winning in the polls. That's a very bad sign.
Time to redesign her, I'm afraid. I'd give you advice, but I don't really have any. Besides maybe "draw from life till you're better; drop anime for awhile." But that's the same generic advice that can be given to any artist, lol. But that's because it applies to everybody. Either way, good luck. XD

I tried to think of some dark and tough anime girl for you to use as reference, but couldn't come up with anything. Maybe something like this, though? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLzOrik5YJ8
Moody and strong, but still pretty. That's what you need to shoot for!
Anyway, not a bad picture. Just make her more feminine looking. Haircut and eyes are the two biggest things I'd change.

And there's more reference. She's Taiga, but she's Palmtop, too. Scary and adorable. Moe moe. Toradora spoilers though, kind of.

:lol:Thanks for the suggestion but I meant to draw "her" exactly the way I drew "her". I probably should have put this up in the description of this poll...but I didn't feel like changing it...but, I don't have this poll up to ask people what gender I should make my character(as I have mentioned). I'm doing this so I can get an idea of the character's surroundings and peers. But I am going to work on redesigning "her". And even if the character was a girl I didn't mean to make her "tough"(although the pose may suggest so...)

So it's a guy then?

If you have no plans on changing it, then why are you even asking what we think of it?

I'm doing this so I can get an idea of the character's surroundings and peers.
You should decide what you're going to draw before you draw it, not draw something and then let the opinions of others dictate what you're going to draw next. If you try shoe-horning all of your characters into roles based on what other people think of them, you're going to have really fly-swatted drawings and/or stories.

But I am going to work on redesigning "her".
Good, good.

And even if the character was a girl I didn't mean to make her "tough"(although the pose may suggest so...)
Well, that's the thing with drawings. It doesn't matter what you meant to show, it matters what you're actually showing. Your "girl" is frowning, scowling, looking down, and pointing "her" fist at the camera. And "she" looks like a girl. That means you drew a tough "girl," even if you didn't want to, even though the whole drawing is a little ambiguous. Which is why I said you'd probably want to redesign "her." If every person who looks at your drawing thinks that you're portraying something different, that's a problem. Unless you're not trying to portray anything with your drawings, in which case, there's no reason for you to draw.

But you are trying to show something, otherwise you wouldn't be drawing. So you need the personality (and gender!) of your character made more clear. If we were to draw an analogy between your drawing and a written essay, the essay would be a great story you imagined in your head and decided to put down on paper. And then you accidentally smudged all the ink on the paper, making it half-illegible. You could say "well, it doesn't matter that you can't read it, lol," but then why would you even bother writing essays in the first place?

So....yeah. I guess the thing I'm trying to say is "just practice until you get it right."
And don't tell me "I drew it exactly the way I wanted to draw it," because that's a cheap cop-out. If you could have drawn it better, you would have. Any artist would!

I can tell you tried hard on your drawing though, since your first line was defending it (even if your defense was a lie). Because of that, I'm not worried about your future artistic skills. I'm sure you'll improve quickly. Just keep practicing. :)

...Wow...:heh:. I never was good with persuasion/arguing. :)I won't say if it's a guy or girl... I was really surprised, after you left your reply more people started voting girl...

I do have the personality and gender down, I'm just not sure how other people will see the character......

:lol:Seeing that I can't win this one, I will keep practicing(which I would have done anyways...) and keep working on it... The next one should be up in a day or two...

:lol:Thanks for coming back to this thread again(and again...). :)

It's fine, and I hope my suggestions are helping at least a little bit. And sorry if my last post came off a little mean sounding; I just hate it when fellow artists say "well, I drew it exactly the way I wanted it to," because:
1.)It doesn't matter what you draw, it matters what people see. And...
2.)Usually when people use an excuse like "well, I drew it that way on purpose," or "that's just my style," they're just trying to cover up their mistakes with a blanket excuse, which scares me a little, because that could mean they don't plan on improving, which is no good. D:
But I'm glad you took my criticism well. That's almost always the sign of a good artist. So good luck, and keep up the good work. =D
I'll look forward to your next one!

Wow...when you put it that way it does sound a bit scaryx_x(how could someone not want to improve??).
:)I like honest criticism rather than what people say just so you "don't feel bad".

I was just rereading one of your previous replies...:heh:my character does seem in need of a haircut...
