Hey Everyone. I have some great news! I'm going to be attending the Seattle Final Fantasy concert in July and I have a ticket to the composers reception after, where I will be able meet Nobuo Uematsu!

The plan is to give him a portfolio with the (shining) hope that he will be so impressed that he will allow me to be his apprentice so I don't have to go to uni! Well, that's the dream :P.

Anyway, the portfolio. I want to put together something that will knock his socks off. So I will be posting music, ideas and whatnot here so you guys can have some input (if you'd be so kind :)).

I'll be posting the base ideas for the portfolio soon but I would love some suggestions straight away if you have some!!!

I'm pretty sure you should try commenting on other peoples' music first.

Edit: Thanks. I'll start looking at your music and then I'll let you know which ones I like the best sometime later tonight or in the morning! You are so lucky, though!

The only I can say here is that try and put some of the best tracks in the first positions. So you can grab the attention fast. And try to see how to organize the rest in an order that can have a good effect in the listener or in this case him.

Wait, let me get this straight. You're going to this concert and you have tickets to go to his after party. He has no idea who you are. You want to give him your portfolio at the party in hopes that he will review it and take you under as his study. Is that right?

Here's where I'm torn with the ideas. I can either put all the best, best ones first OR I can arrange the songs so it is really well balanced through the entire CD. So I've sort of done a mix of those two ideas.

In a nutshell, yes. I've met Arnie Roth before, so hopefully he'll remember me, intruduce me to Uematsu and hopefully I'll be able to have a good chat with him.

You'll have a slightly better advantage if you're from japan and can speak japanese. Otherwise the chances of getting him to accept you is slim to none. You won't be able to score (no pun intended) with any japanese composers if you can't speak japanese. Communication is vital in places where english isn't the dominant language, music skills come second. Remember there are japanese music majors in Japan too (you're not the only one who probably would kill to become an apprentice of his), thus you're at a competitive disadvantage. However if you can speak Japanese (fluently) face to face with him at the party, then you'll have a better chance.

Agreed. I'm learning Japanese ASAP, but fluently by July, nope..

Still, I don't think that fact we can't communicate fluently (yet) will shadow his opinion of my music too much at all. I just hoping he see's potential and if he suggests something then I will probably follow him like a soldier haha. IF he said something amazing like "when you're fluent, contact me" then my head would explode, then I would learn Japanese like crazy.

NO HUGS! HUMBLE! haha. Well, I spoke to Akira Yamaoka (silent hill composer) at the Play: Video Game Symphony concert in Sydney 07. He spoke about 5 English words and I spoke 1 Japanese word. Arigatou haha. We talked about music for over 35 mins and Arnie Roth (conductor, and the guy who knows everyone) said that we looked like we were old friends catching up haha. It'll be ok :P

I wish you the best of luck, Kevin. This is an amazing opportunity you have and I hope everything goes as planned. I am sure if you get the chance that Mr. Uematsu will be willing to talk and listen a little bit, but just remember what Porsche said.

I'll look at your website and listen to some of the piece of your portfolio and give you a list of the ones that STUCK out (for the better, of course). If you're average, you'll just be a distant memory and if he remembers you either it'll be for your potential or how horrid it struck him. XD Although, I highly doubt the latter, but I question the first.

Get back to you soon. :)

Boku wo deshi ni shite kudasai: Please make me your pupil.
Boku ni ongaku wo oshiete kudasai: Please teach me Music.

Onegai shimasu (with bow): Please! (in a polite jap way. Do this if he refuse you initially or right after you ask him.)

Remember these phrases. If you don't remember how to introduce yourself that's fine but remember these cause you can introduce yourself in English and he will understand. If you've started learning Japanese, I'm sure you will know how to pronounce them relatively. He should know minimim amounts of english so ask long as he sees you trying to communicate in a sincere manner, it should be fine.

I wish you the best of luck!!

I too wish you luck, Kevin. However, please be mindful of the fact that there will be other people there as well. My family and I will be traveling a long way to see this concert and we too have purchased tickets to the reception. So long as you feel that this reception is the proper forum with which to present your portfolio, then do what ya gotta do.
