It's called Mexican flu over here, which is a much more appropiate name since it came from Mexico and pigs can't even get it in the first place.

The pandemic wasn't announced until a few weeks ago. Also, it's starting to spread faster apparently.

Oh, really? I haven't heard anything about it in awhile now, but I haven't really watched the news in a few weeks. I thought the media's fear-mongering using Swine Flu was dead, but apparently they've still got some stuff left, hahah. xD

No, you'll definitely get swine flu if you travel anywhere outside of your own home. Best to just lock yourself in your bedroom 'til it's over, in my opinion. :vader:

Don't let PETA and the meat industry get up on your ass! The term is the...

"H1N1 Virus."

Don't degrade the rights of the pig or make it look less appetizing to sell! If we called it the Mexican Flu in the States, heads would fly though that's basically what it is.

Look at what drama the media causes! S-H-A-M-E! Their always just looking to mess with the public's minds because they're too bored to have their own lives. Swine Flu or what ever you want to call it is just a stupid way to stir things up again.

According to friends it's more scary because of how easily it can transmit form person to person, and I think people are also worried it will mutate again. It's just a bad flu apparently.

Well 3 people in Australia have died - but I think the news said both have existing medical conditions. And YAY, no more forced quarantine for anyone who's been in contact with the damn thing, because at least one of my co-workers has it (fun fun - those of us who were in contact with him the day before he was diagnosed got the crap scared out of us because we got called into the managers office and had no idea what we'd done!) and I don't want to spend my Uni break locked in my house ;)

Edited to correct my facts!

We don't know yet, the definite one's still off sick, and a couple of others have flu-like symptoms so have to go get checked out. But from what we've heard, it's not a lot different from a normal flu. I'm not worried, a few people won't come to work because they're worried about getting it though.

Over in Australia they are not as stressed over swine and they just see it as another flu. i had what my doctor said was swine and whilst I do have existing asthma condition nothing really happened that hasn't happened before. I mean I did get asthma afterward but of coarse I didn't have any asthma whilst I had Swine.

Soz if I'm babbling on about my experience...

Yeah, Australians are notoriously laid-back about most things XD Plus it's Flu season anyway, there's not a lot of difference for us. Sadly people have died, but honestly, any Flu does that to a few people, it's just a lot more highly publicised.

mmm, I'd agree with the whole "media hype" thing, I know several people that have it, and over half of them have already recovered or are on the road to recovery.
Nothing to worry about if you're healthy and aren't ill already, I don't think.
I understand, though, the way hospitals are freaking out about it, imagine having swine flu as well as what you were already in hospital for...
I bet ya it'll all have blown over by Christmas... *fingers crossed!!*

Sounds bout right! I'll bloody kill 'em if they close either Heathrow or Sydney, I want to come to England in January dammit!

*Groans* there's about 10 people sick at my work at the moment, I have a suspicion at least a few are swine flu, and there's another confirmed case. It's making it hell on our ability to staff the shop. Damn flu season.

I think it's really kinda ridiculous. Honestly, I think we should stop trying to stir up panics over every little epidemic, especially since it won't save the lives of those people already infected. As for prevention, good old fashioned washing hands has never really changed and it's still about the best you can do to prevent a viral infection, short of receiving a vaccine. Also, as funny as it sounds, in Puerto Rico there's still a panic. My girlfriend and I were quite surprised since there hasn't been much publicity about it lately where we live.

Heh swine flu doesn't scare people anymore because to tell you the truth it doesn't matter. The media is searching for anything possible to make life a whole lot deadlier or atleast scarier. If there was an apocalypse I am sure that Sydney Airport will still be open so don't panic about that.

Well, whether the Mexican flu (I refuse to call it swine flu because it doesn't affect pigs) is deadly or not, it sure got my employer spooked enough to distribute alcohol wipes, desinfectant and tissue boxes around the building XD Everybody's obsessed with cleaning their desk with the alochol wipes now, since it's a lot more interesting than actual work :P lol

It's Hysteria and paranoia, the reason why it's so scary is because it's new, it' mutated and there is no vaccine. It hasn't killed as many people in a year as much as flu in a year. This fall my allergies to school will act up and everyone will think I have swine flu. It's like wtf. Just keep cool, wash your hands, sneeze in a tissue and other stuff that they been telling to do for years and you'll be safe.

Why is it that I know more people who have come close to dying because of it than people who almost die because of the normal flu? I think the scary thing about it is that it seems to affect young adults the worst.

The other day someone told me this:

Everybody complains that there's too much hysteria over the mexican flu. But thanks to that, everyone is prepared. Maybe it's not as bad as we at first thought, but at least we were ready in case it was as bad. What if it turned out to be really bad and nobody had done anything?

And he's right at that point, maybe it's not so bad because we're prepared. If we hadn't been prepared it might have looked a lot worse right now. If the government hadn't done anything, we would have complained about them not doing anything.

Bottom line is, no matter how the government responds to stuff like this, people will always complain about it.

There's one thing positive about this virus: It increased human sanitation awareness.

And that's where the positive points end. The negative points stretch for miles, starting with how the media controls our sub conscious.

i had it in June, its really not a big thing (compared to what the media says) ^_^ at all. They gave me some meds and i had to stay home for a week. at first you get a little fever, then you wake up and you feel all congested (sp?) and crap. It sucks...a lot, felt like poo. but im still alive ;)

There's huge amounts of exaggerations going around but honestly it's no biggie. I heard that it came out from a mexican piggery owned by an American company but I have no idea about the sabotage thing.

^ Agreed.

Yeah, H1N1 isn't much different from the normal seasonal flu. It's a variation of the flu, just with different surface molecules (the place our anti-bodies attach). The problem isn't necessarily its nature/characteristics, it's more that it's unexpected to have two flues going around at once and the strain (haha...) that this puts on the medical system. Serious respiratory infection seems to be relatively common with H1N1 and that requires hospitalisation and proper equipment which is not necessarily available for a larger than usual number of people . If hospitals have to care for an unexpected number of people, naturally the care of others will suffer as well or at least be less comfortable, which includes longer waiting times etc.

Though the thing to keep in mind is, while it may not be any worse than the normal seasonal flu, the normal flu kills about 30.000 people in the US every year. I think it's a worthy goal to prevent that number from doubling.

Why is it that I know more people who have come close to dying because of it than people who almost die because of the normal flu? I think the scary thing about it is that it seems to affect young adults the worst.
It's more like "it effects old people the least" rather than "young adults the worst". Younger people are very unlikely to have any sort of resistance against H1N1, while people older than 60 are still likely to retain protection from the 1918 pandemic, which was H1N1 as well, but had much higher virulence, ie. deadliness.

In China, it is called 猪流感. Okay err how to explain.

As China thinks Hong Kong is the centre of H1N1 Virus, they said that people who goes to Hong Kong and comes back to China will require to stay home for a week (without going out so if you have no food you literally starve to death).

If you do have the virus and you're a foriegner, they tell you to go back to your home country and you have to pay the ticket back to your home country.

Hahaha, I was actually in Tibet when they announced the outbreak of H1N1, they used these gun-like things that measure body temperature before allowing you to go from place to place up there. China has to worry more cause of the increased population density and lack of... advanced sanitation stuff...
