So, over the past few years I've become increasingly interested in art from the old masters, such as the paintings of Raphael and others. I was wondering what some of your favorite works of art were.
Mine are:
1. The Triumph of Death by Pieter Breughel the Elder (?) (It's just so busy and chaotic, but it still has focus)
2. The Girl With the Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer (I bought a print in DC...)
3. Various Rembrandt and other dutch portraits (I love the lighting effects they did using oil paints)
4. The Veiled Rebecca (I can't remember who did it, but it's at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta. It's a marble statue that looks as though its veil could just blow in the wind. Truly a sight to behold, though not terribly famous)
5. The Scream by Edvard Munch (I like the use of color and the way that the painting seems so surreal, yet plausible)
6. The Portrait of Franz Liszt by Henri Lehmann (I like the use of color and dark tones, along with the realism of the portrait)
There are quite a few more, but those are the ones that I can remember as being particularly striking.
