I think 3/4 is standard for most players. i have rarely seen a 4/4 bass. I'll ask some of my orchestra friend who play bass. one of them is like 6' 1''

Gekkeiju: I think the "3/4" makes it clear that they meant the double bass (although even then, I *almost* read it as 34"; as in 34"-scale bass guitar).

In this day and age, when someone says "the bass", it's usually short for "the electric bass guitar", so it's easy to why you were confused. I was too at first.

mukmuk69:

1/2 size - It measures 40.2 inches and will be suitable for older children to adults who are around five feet four inches in height.
3/4 size - It measures 43.7 inches and is the size most commonly used by musicians.

That said, bass height can be adjusted:

In order to find the correct height for the bass first assume the proper stance.

Then hold the bow at the frog in the right hand and place the bow on one of the middle two strings so that the stick of the bow is perpendicular to the string.

When the bass is at the correct height, the bow should rest naturally half-way between the bridge and the fingerboard, (with the right arm slightly bent).

If the bow rests too close to the fingerboard, then the bass needs to be raised. If the bow rests too close to the bridge, then the bass needs to be lowered. In other words, you are to adjust the height of the bass so that the bow will rest in a good playing position.

-Ignore the advice that you should adjust the instrument’s height so that the nut on the bass is level with the eyebrows.
Your eyebrows have nothing to do with playing the bass!

-When the bass is at the correct height, the bow should fall naturally half-way between the bridge and the fingerboard, (with the arm slightly bent).

-If the bow lies too close to the fingerboard, then the bass needs to be raised.
If it lies too close to the bridge, then the bass needs to be lowered.

Mukmuk, I don't know much about the double bass (*plays the bass guitar*), but I hope the info I posted helps you at least a little.

I managed to ask my friend. In general, most players play a 3/4 bass and rarely 4/4

TBH Ive never seen a 4/4 double bass.
Of course, you could just pick up the bass guitar just as easy.

Not really, most instruments come in 'sizes'
