I love the pan flute and I want to learn how to play it (not sure which kind tho'); it has such a calming effect.

Take a listen:

I enjoy that as well.

Whatcha say?

Panpipes are quite good; I recently heard a version of Only Time (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbCEQHfDvWk) featuring the panpipes, and it's pretty neat. In general, I think they sound better with lots of background reverberation. Personally it gives me a feeling of being disconnected from reality and timelessness. I'd love to hear it and the tin whistle used in orchestras more.

Never seen the actual instrument though! Haha.

There are many, many designs.

I wanna hear a didgeridoo/bamboo flute/pan flute/strings/piano combo. Maybe that should be my next project...

If you find an orchestral piece with noticeable panpipes, let me know okay? What do you think of this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10LTlRhXwik)? Totally off topic, I know, but it got me thinkin' of it. (I hope you opt to watch the whole thing but if not watch 6:50-9:05. I love it.)

Haven't heard them used much at all to be honest, and when I have, they're used for special sounds, etc.

Regarding that video, I watched the whole thing, and it was pretty interesting. I found it funny that the tuba sounded more like a horn at points. Shame the sound quality is so distorted. To be honest, I've had similar thoughts for a while now, often finding myself glad I don't play one of the 'boring' instruments. Ohh... the tragic life of a tuba player...

No, the tragic life of a tuba player who isn't in an orchestra...

I have no idea what the pan flute is XD

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pan_Flute? Maybe that'll show something.

Really? Haha, I thought so too!

Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2Iq4y7AUls) is an example of an orchestra making it; there are plenty floating about because I assume this it just a fun thing to do (the instrumentation is closer to the original than others I've heard). It's not the original but it'll do. There's really no need to watch this vid but w/e). What do you think of the last video I posted in the OP? I think it's pretty cool.

Oh, yeah? What instrument do you play and for how long?

@Mushy: Yeah; it's not a well-known instrument. I enjoy the sound, though.
