From my Last image, I made a V2 of the Outline with different legs. The use of Armored legs like that just didn't feel right with the character design in my opinion.

Woah.

Do you CG professionally, or only in your spare time? Because these totally look like those that were done by a professional.

One thing I'd like to note though, it seems that you're making some characters look much younger... seems weird that way.

As Mushyrulez said, you seem to make your characters look younger than they are(for the ones that were fanart.....are they all?). But other than that, you have a really clean, animated look on your pics. I'm almost tempted to say that you did them on MS Paint...

In my opinion, the third and fifth ones looked the best.

Thanks for the comments people.

@Mushyrulez:
I do the CGing on my own & no I don't do it professionally, lol.
I wish, lol.
As for them looking younger than the actual anime characters, that's just a side effect of my inability to get it to look exactly the same, lol.

@X:
Thanks ^.^

@RainingSilver64:
lol, I do have artwork on my DeviantArt, which I have drawn on MSPaint, lol, but yea, not making them look exactly like the official artists drew them, is just a side effect of my inability to get it to look exactly the same, lol.

That DarkSteel AngeRenamon Pic was actually designed for another forum RPG, I kinda lost interest in it, becasue it was taking like a week for the Game masters of the RP to update the game for people >.<

------------------------------------------------
In other news, i've updated the first post with my latest piece which is for the RPG of this forum of the character i'm making.
It's the Outline version, but i'll be making a colored version as well.

As well as post it here also, lol.

I have done some pieces in MSPaint which are screenshot pixel traces of anime scenes &/or sprites.

Here are some of the Umineko Screenshot pixel images i did in MSpaint. Not all. Visit my DeviantArt link in my sig, if u want to see them all.

I haven't watched that before.....did u say trace?!

Lolz, the first one is good, more realistically anime-style(if that makes any sense)...kind of......edgy, the lines are too.....Paint....you might want to take it into another program and smudge the black lines a little bit so they're not so....you know.

As for the second one....XD Kawaii!!!!!!

Do you have any original drawings?

Yes, those Umineko no Naku Koro ni character pixel are are pixel outline traces of characters from the anime in scenes.
For some of the parts of some of the sprites I had to fix the images, because sometimes the characters are part of the way off the screen, so I have to add what was cut off in the scene.

Of course they are edgy, it's pixel work done in MSPaint, it's very difficult to make them not edgy in MSPaint, lol.
For Pixel art, I wouldn't use smudging anyways, becasue then it wouldn't be pixel art.

Really good art there, I can tell a lot of time went into making quality pieces.

I am going to point out the proportions though. It may just be your style, and it is just in an anime style too, and it really isn't horrid, but it's off enough that it's a bit distracting from the image as a whole. But, practice does make perfect.

It really doesn't take that much time to do pixel art for me, it just depends on how my mood is for that day.
Some days I just feel like having no effort in doing anything so sometimes any art piece can take me a long while, but some doesn't take me very long to complete.
Especially when ti comes to pixel art.

As for the mouse, I use a Wireless mouse, so it doesn't get worn out, lol.

I have a pen tablet, but I can't get good lines to work on it, they always become very jagged. + It doesn't have a pressure sensitivity feature on it, so i can't do soft lines.

Also Proportions don't mean jack squat when it comes to Anime-styled drawings, lol.

Yes, and they still look good, because CLAMP understands the human body and how to exaggerate it to good effect. Try drawing an anime person without tracing him and without using reference, and you'll see that proportions do, in fact, matter. Maria Holic has a ridiculously good art style that could only come from years of hard work and an excellent understanding of the way the human body works. To say that human proportions are meaningless in anime is completely ridiculous and an insult to the artists who've worked so hard to learn and understand them. Cheers.

That's them, and this is me, I draw in my own style, and if I have some screw-ups here and there, then that's fine with me. Not every1 is a perfect artist that gets everything perfect...

Omorose Panya
December 6th, 2009, 11:20 pm
Anime pretty much means animation (from Japan) so... yeah. Many possibilities there.

But I disagree with you on the proportions bit, Elderkain. In reality, no kinds of drawings need to be proportional; art doesn't have to make sense. But that doesn't mean that proportions mean "jack shit" and it doesn't mean that people won't generally regard awkwardly-proportioned styles as, well... awkward.

(I would comment on your pics but they're not showing up on this comp. I'll get on my laptop later and take a peak.)

Unless your art is by picasso, then porportions generally don't mean anything.

Omorose Panya
December 7th, 2009, 12:49 am
Sure they do. I am not talking about the art itself but how people generally perceive and appreciate it. Once again, I am not reflecting upon the art itself and I am not saying that anything "has" to be drawn a certain way. I am just spouting what I am hoping is common sense.

I have no idea what his proportions are though. I'm sure they're nothing to complain about. Unless they're like..............way weird. Doubt it, though.

They're not too bad. Just some minor...head-body, face-head disagreements.

As for everything that has been going on in this discussion while I've been gone.....

As usual, I have to side with Hopeless. It's not that proportions are being forgotten in anime/manga styled drawings, they're just being exaggerated to some extent where it would still look good even while being a cartoon, but still have a realistic feel.

That's them, and this is me, I draw in my own style, and if I have some screw-ups here and there, then that's fine with me. Not every1 is a perfect artist that gets everything perfect...

And every artist draws in their own style, and every artist makes mistakes here and there. :D Most of us post our drawings up for critique(whether it be complimentary or criticism) from more experienced(and sometimes inexperienced, depending on the area of art) artists, so we can improve our drawings, and lessen the obvious mistakes in our work.

HopelessComposer

Ah, my bad. I meant to say "proportions are needed for good art." You can choose to draw however you want to, though, obviously. But please, don't hide behind "style" as an excuse to ignore basic human anatomy. Like you said, no artist is perfect, so there's really no reason to make excuses for yourself. Just practice more. =P

But I disagree with you on the proportions bit, Elderkain. In reality, no kinds of drawings need to be proportional; art doesn't have to make sense. Exactly how I feel. =)

I have no idea what his proportions are though. I'm sure they're nothing to complain about. Unless they're like..............way weird. Doubt it, though.
Some of his drawings are actually quite good, since he traced half of them. Which is hilarious, since he's tracing off of good artists, while simultaneously writing off their skill in anatomy as meaning "jack shit." Which is why I told him to try drawing something himself, to see exactly how bad drawings can look if you don't understand what your subject looks like.

As usual, I have to side with Hopeless. It's not that proportions are being forgotten in anime/manga styled drawings, they're just being exaggerated to some extent where it would still look good even while being a cartoon, but still have a realistic feel.
Exactly. And if you don't understand the subject you're exaggerating, there's no way you can exaggerate said subject effectively. =D

Anyway, Elder, you're free to draw however you want, but please refrain from making comments suggesting that the hard work of others means "jack shit." Just because you don't feel like investing the effort into learning how to draw accurate human bodies, doesn't mean the professional anime artists you admire (and trace) feel the same way. Believe me - they don't. The reason they can draw good anime is because they can draw good people, period. ;)

RainingSilver64
December 7th, 2009, 09:03 pm
:D And moving on, I hope that you aren't too discouraged by this lengthy discussion on proportions, drawing styles, etc., and continue to post your drawings, and accept our thoughtful criticism to help you(not make you feel bad).

Thanks, the Raven one I put a lot of effort into making, becasue he is just plain awesome! I wish they would continue the "Earl & Fairy" series. >.<
As for the Allen Walker one, I was playing around with gradient shading instead of the vector color shading like the others. When it comes to use gradient fills to shade, i'm not that good, and that's why the shading on it looks a lot more plain in comparison to the others.

In anime? Where do you see *anyone* with purple spiral hair? I thought it was a guy, too. You should be able to tell whether or not you character is female before the hair is even added, unless you have a very ambiguous looking character. XP
Notice how your reference drawing's face is all curvy, especially for the eye socket. It's pretty feminine looking. Your chibi's face has a very convex curve going on for both sides of her face, making her look very masculine. I need some practice with this too. I have to be very careful, or all my girls end up looking like guys. It's very unflattering, hahah. XD

let's see there is
Budoko (http://www.animecharactersdatabase.com/viewone.php?id=18288) from Akikan!
Noriko Ukai (http://www.animecharactersdatabase.com/viewone.php?id=20147) from Gravitation

I know there are tons of people in anime with drill hair. I was answering your incredulous "when do guys wear drill hair" question with a question of my own: "when do you see anyone (in real life) with drill hair?" My point was that asking what guys wore purple drill hair was pointless, since NOBODY has purple drill hair in real life.

I was basically saying that your chibi looked like a guy to me, since anime characters (guy or girl) can have whatever sort of crazy hairstyle you give them, hahah.

And my drawings aren't perfect either. I've been drawing animu faces for like an hour now, and they keep looking like crap, hahah. =D
My girl character keeps on looking like a boy, actually, like I said earlier. It's very frustrating. XD

If it means anything, it looks like a female to me.

It's super stylized illustrations. Don't get too nit-picky.

XD

Lolz, was the hair purple? XD I was just talking about the style.

:/ And I don't find it that hard to draw girls...XD Well, full-body anyways. My close-ups on the face are a bit....well, they're just bad XD. Or scary....lolz.

Sorry, I can't get this crazy idea out of my head that art forums were meant for critique and self-improvement. :heh:
And "it's the style," is the worst, most overused excuse for art ever.
If Artland were a country, saying "it's my style" would surely be an offense punishable by death. Or at least punishable by a severe finger-waggling.

Anyway, just giving my two cents to ElderKain. If all my girl characters looked like boys to people, I'd want them to tell me, along with an explanations as to why they looked like boys. I'm posting on the assumption that ElderKain is the same as me.

:/...I'd want to know if all my girls looked like boys....that would be a serious problem...XD Or maybe a good thing for me, being that I have trouble drawing guys.
