View Full Version : My First Composition
Archangel
April 27th, 2004, 02:07 am
hey y'all.
this is my first composition.... well, actually third... but this is the first one i actually recorded.... and i'm kinda scared (literally). I know that i'm definetely not up to blackmage's music... but if you can, may you listen to my song and give me any comment on it... from a scale (from one to ten or twenty or whatever number that appeases you) to "I hate it"(yes, that too). Also, for your safety of your ears... this was not written out on a composition program... all the notes and sounds you hear are actually me playing (horribly) on a friend's keyboard since i have no way of accessing a program writer for my computer. Therefore, plz accept my apologies in advance for my terrible playing.
enjoy!
P.S. I just noticed the beginning part is kinda messed up.... this is just for me to know which parts you like and don't like... i've got a better version but i need to record it. thx.
P.P.S I just got a new one out down at the bottom somewhere called "Distant Thoughts 2.0". It is still done manually on a keyboard but more clearer and changed a few things... so scrap this song. just here for critism.

Wow, you're a really talented keyboard player - I can't play parts into the computer, I always stuff it up so I always go back to good old Noteworthy ;) This piece sounds really ethereal - you've made good use of the upper octaves in the piece and placing the base line around the middle C area for most of the piece means it doesn't sound too jumpy. I like the beginning - it sounds really nice and the descending run is very well executed (dammit I'm so bad at scales!) The dynamics were nearly inaudible in places but that's more down to the touchtone - your use of dynamics is very good otherwise. It's a nice progressive piece - it doesn't spend too long on a particular motif so it doesn't get boring and it's quite soothing to listen to.
Great piece - 9/10 as you had the added difficulty of playing it into the computer and it can be really frustrating to do!

Rats, I've tried making a piece that actually sounds anime like but you did an awesome song. could be used. But I don't think the sscale should go in there. It sounds good but it doesn't fit the mood of the song opther than that 10/10 man it sounds awesome!!

Purely amazing, it sounds so abstract, reserved in it's own way. The dramatic changes give a feel of flying and the quick wave like way in which you composed this really resembles a dream. I think the title is perfect and you have much luck as a composer, best of luck to you :).

I think that a personal recording is much better than a midi or mus file especially if the composer's playing it. That way you can feel their style both as a composer and a performer, and the true feelings imbued between every note can be brought out into it's full and astounding lustre.
Your song has inspired me to write very poetically about it ^_^
I enjoyed listening to it very much. The song on the whole feels definitely like a denouement, as if someone was lost, but not forgotten. Those are the feelings that I felt.

i'm glad that my piece has moved some of you and most humbled that it has inspired others. thx servbot for your supportive comments!
Kenny- first off, thx for your comments! I think you've posted more than once! lol!
as for your question, it varies to some ppl. in some high schools, they have a class called composition or theory (or both). My school unfortunately does not have such a program so I taught myself  . I've played piano for about 8 to 9 years and quitted. I stopped because I couldn't handle the practice hours (and i'm not saying that you should quit too!) but, despite that, I love playing the piano on my free time just playing common patterns (G chord, D, C,D.... that's the first most basic pattern I've found and learned. each chord has one bar, then repeats.) Another factor probably is jazz band since it teaches you how to solo (and also teaches you what to play eg. Bb blue scale which i find cool cause whatever note you hit in the scale sounds perfect no matter what!) Enough of me. Bottom line: know your scales, chords, and inversions, and stuff.... mostly theory. that's just part of creating music. the other part is creativity and feeling. without that, the music would be hollow... without a story.
BlackMage- I'm very happy that you listened to my song cause i listened to yours (which are awesome!!! For those who haven't heard his compositions, Go Listen to them! their a works of art!) so far... Blackmage is my internet composition hero! B) THX BlackMage!
The rest, thx for your wonderful comments! :D

Wow, this is such a great composition! I'm usually a forum lurker, that is to say that i check the forums once in awhile but never post. Your composition is so great, it's inspired me to post :). I've listened to some of blackmages compositions, and I have to say his are good, but i think i like yours better. Correct me if i am mistaken, but I think blackmage has more of a classical style of composition, while you have more of a modern style. I've only started to study theory, so i dont know the differences in theory between modern and classical. Anyway, great job 10/10!

Our styles of music are really quite different, but both can be appreciated, no matter what style some one likes.

Basic theory:
All melodic and harmonic changes should be chord based.
Even rhthym is not a must, go will sometimes!
There are many different chords but all are either major or minor.

thx wandering mage. a composer is glad to hear that his music is appreciated!
I'm working on about three songs at the moment. one something like "distant thoughts", one with vocal, and one transribing. So i got lots of work set out for me! Though let me say this: I would love to listen to all of the composers in this forum's work because it is inspiring and something new to listen to... it motivates me and probably many others to continue to compose... so don't be shy like me and post your music up! good or bad, music is music. heck, a 4 year old banging pots is music!

Hey archangel :D do you have anymore compositions? oh and did you downloaded finale notepad 2004 becasue i need help and... hey! what's you music program can you make midi out of them? i really need a program that can convert music sheet into music midi's!!! Finale doesn't convert so i only have the sheets.

May 5th, 2004, 04:22 am
sorry. i don't have a writing program. again, my song and probably the rest from now on until i get sebelius are all done by hand. I basically play it on a piano, transfer by floppy, then go to computer and there's the final product. I'm working on two other ones. I'm trying to finish my first one though and i have a vocal song but it is bad cause no rhyme. anyways, even so, i need my friend to sing it for me again and record which probably won't happen cause that song sucks like crazy. so I'm gonna finish songs without words first then try writing lyrics (write lyrics first, then try writing the music for it.... :heh:) anyways...
uh... i dunno about changing midi's. maybe do it my way, the low tech style or just get another program...

My goodness, that was beautiful. I'm sitting here, listening to it, and crying. Wow, it's just so. . .amazing. Words can't express how wonderful it is. It's by far the most beautiful piece of music I've ever heard. I would pay insane amounts of money for a copy of that and any other compositions you have, just to listen to them over and over again. It's so peaceful and freeing but so sad. Listening to this and other people's compositions on here gives me such a desire to learn how to play the piano and just, attempt, to do this. I really needed something like this because a classmate of mine just died over the weekend. Thank you for sharing this beauty. Out of 1OO, this a 1OO, above and beyond.

Thanks Archangel and Lovely_Spirit. This is only the 2nd death I've had to deal with so it's been pretty hard. The 1st was another classmate less than 8 months ago. :( The funeral was today for the boy that died over the weekend and his dad played the song he wrote, sung, and played guitar on. So sad.
I need to start taking piano lessons. I like listening to random songs just to hear piano solos and just background piano. The piano is such a beautiful instrument and I've just recently learned to appreciate the beauty that it makes.

We should all appreciate the simplest things in life:
walking down a path, listening to music, seeing everything around us...
we take things for granted. We only realize how precious it is when we lose it.
what i like about music is that it defines your feelings and life.
when you start playing, it is like the first cry of life.
when you stumble or miss a note but continue playing, life's mistakes should not be played over again so it will look perfect, but continue with your life.
when you reach the climax of piece where it is the most uplifting and desireable moment, your achievements in life may inspire others to do the same but never know who they would be.
when you reach the final note of the song, silence, and with a bow, the piece is complete. when we reach the end, and we have done our best, we will bow and leave our song played in the hearts of those you knew and have heard your song of life.

That is a very profound and correct philosophical statement. I read somewhere of the Millennium Project Longplayer - a musical composition that will play for 1000 years with no repetition. It will outlast any of us, yet its source is little more than 6 pieces of music playing simultaneously in different combinations - in the same way life is like a series of pieces playing alongside each other, finishing at different times and creating different events in the music, from climaxes to solos to duets and other infinitely diverse creations.
A musical note is indeed a very versatile thing.

I won't rate it, but I will comment. ^_^
It's a pretty nice piece, obviously improvisatory in nature. Do you like Jazz music? It sounds like some of the mellower Jazz pieces.
If you want constructive criticism, well I only wished it were a bit more structured to give it some sense of form. But overall it's excellent, especially at your first try.

thx mobius. and yeah, i do kinda like jazz music. i'm in the jazz band at my school. and no, my intent wasn't going for jazz music, then again, i didn't know what my intent on style of music was. It was something I wanted to do... To remind me of someone... so yeah...
i totally agree about the structure comment. lol, that was something i couldn't figure out to do in time since i made a due date on it to perform for an arts night which was about 2 months time from when i began writing it. I already began playing it by memory on piano for 4 to 6 months ahead of the arts night.

As touching Archangel's composition, it has a wonderfully solid progression that balances the tension and resolution admirably well. However, it could use a good strong theme, or maybe not, since you obviously want it to sound... well "distant." Once again, so sorry about your string intrusion. I offended out of ignorance. Sorry.

Well, after 72 hours of examination I found somthing wrong with the music....
Some of your note values are that less of a 64th note, which is nearly unheard-of in music (but is okay if that is what you want :) ). Not to mention that their are random notes in the midi pattern, that have to audio to them.
That took a wile. I'm looking forward to your next piece of music, and was a joy tring to find somthing wrong with an almost perfect piece of music.

lol, i was waiting for someone to pick that up. congrats Mies, your the first one!
yes, there are some notes that don't even exist in the song, but here is the thing: i don't really have the greatest at keeping the tempo.... i know what it should, but when i play, i kinda throw that out... but i should work on that... hehe, i did play this live so there will be mistakes. once i get a program to write music out, i'll fix that kink out and smoothen my music for final copy.....hopefully...... and now i'm waiting to the end of summer so i can again go back to my friends house and do more recordings and post them up..... urgh..... but besides that, I thank you all for your feedback!

Absolutely Beautiful! I usually am not this ecstatic about a song, but this is simply marvelous! I really liked how you played it, because it didn't seem to have a beat at all, which is a technique I adore. The song is very ethereal in nature, giving the title a load of accuracy. If this truly is one of your beginning compositions, then I see great things in your future.
If I had to choose between the first or second version, i would choose the first, because i like what you did about 1:50 in the song better than the same sequence slightly changed in the second version.
VERDICT
+ ~ Beautiful, boundless melody
+ ~ Echoing, Ethereal chord progression
- ~ Uhh... Uhh... *runs away*
OVERALL GRADE ~ 5/5 Superb d-(o_0)-b
ADDITIONAL NOTE ~ I demand sheet music for this song! I'm afraid that I might get cancer if I don't get my hands on a copy, so please - for the sake of my life - program it into a composer of some sort and give me a copy!
That is all. ^^

impressive! It's very original and filled with passion.
can you describe in details how you compose this song? I am very interested. I haven't heard of a piece full of freedom like this for quite a while.
did you compose it by "letting your fingers dance freely on the piano"? or did you compose it with melodies, and then add chords? or, by using IV V vi chord prgression as guideline, and then add melodies?
how long did it take you to compose it?
did you actually written down the notes, or do you just commit them into memories? If you did write it down on a paper, can you scan it into pdf/tiff for us?
what inspires/sparks you to compose this song?
.....countless questions.
Archangel
August 24th, 2004, 06:47 am
hehe, thanks Darren. I'll try and answer your questions as best as i can....
can you describe in details how you compose this song?
well, most of you may know this, but i quit piano at grade/level 8. after that, i just wanted to play what i felt like playing. i first taught myself the most basic pattern: G chord, then D chord, then C chord, and D chord again... and repeating it (that was from watching the worship team pianist at church). later on i just fiddled around with different ways of patterns. at some point, i played something that i liked and kept playing it, adding on new parts to it. the beginning of the song "Distant thoughts" is actually not how i started. I began a little later from the scale going down. after listening to my draft, there was no story, so i continued to compose on it. after maybe the third draft i had the rough layout of the song, which is what you hear on the midi. all i did was did finishing touches.
did you compose it by "letting your fingers dance freely on the piano"? or did you compose it with melodies, and then add chords? or, by using IV V vi chord prgression as guideline, and then add melodies?
yes, all was freely. just 'let it happen'. most of the time, i play something and forget how i did it... luckily i remembered the parts and wrote it down immediately on paper... progression....... i dunno...... i don't really think about that after learning basic progressions... i just think ' i want this part to sound happy(major chord) and this part sad (minor chord) but yeah, no thoughts on progressions...
how long did it take you to compose it?
truthfully, i don't really know. rough guess would have to be last year around september since i performed it around end of march or early april for a school art performance. then i posted it up after registering in ichigo.
did you actually written down the notes, or do you just commit them into memories? If you did write it down on a paper, can you scan it into pdf/tiff for us?
well, again, i play the part many times over to remember and see if i like it, then write it down on paper. probably more ppl would just play and write immediately after. for me, i like long periods of time to write music out. rushing it would only ruin the song since i did it out of haste. i like to just take my time... sorry for the people who want the music.... i'm going to try to put it in a pdf or something....lol.....patience is a virtue...believe it or not....
what inspires/sparks you to compose this song?
alot inspired me.... composers like Brian Mcknight who does play piano and i like his style of music... anime music after watching inuyasha and finally heard a good anime song (pokemon and digimon was the only shows i've watched that was made by japanese anime....), the ppl in the composition thread........................................but mostly.......let's just say a special person was my main inspiration. she moved away and that is why i call it 'distant thoughts'......
anymore questions?

Great song with an interesting Title. :/
How do you record the music? While you are playing the piano?

I see...
that reminds me of the motivation of my first composition also, except the situation is the opposite: I left her. The reason is that I had to follow my parents to emigrate to US. That time I was 15, and I was too young to have courage to determine this relationship (you know, in China is not as liberal as here in US, and I was not sure about how she feels about me), until the farewell party; I saw her crying secretly.... but all is too late. She didn't have an email account, so I don't even know how to contact her. All that is remaining is the memory...
So I named my piece "The Last Memory",
I don't mean to share it, but since the motivations for both our pieces are similar, I might just post it, even it is boring, repetitive, primitive/naive... after all, I didn't touch piano until my 17th year (when I finally earned enough money to buy one). I composed it on a keyboard and wrote it down into sheet music using Cakewalk pro Audio, which later I learns that it's not nearly as good as Finale or even Noteworthy Composer. anyhow, hopefully you can hear the mixture of joy and sadness in this piece ---- memory is sweet yet painful, because you know that it's just memory; it's in the past; not current nor in the future, but in the past...
ok, enough about myself, back to your piece.
You said that you've performed it in a school concert, did the staff record it in a CD for you? (that's usually what they do in school concerts). If so, can you somehow isolate your track and convert it into mp3? The quality of midi recording is quite limited. Although I am amazed how it sounds so beautiful already , I would like to hear a more perfected version. sorry for being completely a nerdy perfectionist, B) , but I am sure that's also what other people want, right, everyone?
[Archangel is mumbling something...]

Hm, the song itself is okay, but I can't connect it with memories. When I listen to it, I don't get the feeling of leaving someone and then remembering that person. However, I didn't shut it off until it ended. The melody is quite memorable and relaxing, but needs some improvement. Maybe you should try out a different structure? Such as beginning with an intro, and then slowly heading to the climax (the main melody) of the song, and that way make it more colourful. The left hand was dull. I know you noticed that too, because it sinks the melody down a bit here and there with its repetitious 1-2-3 notes. As an overall, I can't say you did a bad job, for that would be lying. =] It's good, but that's it. I don't know if the song itself has potentional, but I think you have, so good luck in the future.
oô; I don't know wheter I should give it a 6.5 or a 7, since 6.5 looks bad when you compare it to a perfect 10, but it doesn't mean that the song sucks because of that.
Well, I'll give it a 6.5/10

thanks for your directness, Noir, and no worries, I figured that it's pretty bad as I said before, "even it's boring, repetitive, primitive/naive..."
since I wanted to preserve that special emotion in the piece, I decided to preserve this original/unrefined version and didn't make any refinement on it.
but when I hear you said that, "I can't connect it with memories", I was a little disappointed. probably the emotion is too subtle...., maybe I should really compose a better version for this piece...
though not now :sweatdrop: ; I am currently working on the CMA of this month (everyone should try it, it's quite fun and chanllenging to compose underpressure in a reasonable amount of time-- a month)
so Archangel, you should at least join next month's CMA, because it will be a piano piece--- your specialty
and Noir, it's a bit unfair for us because you simply post up an old composition that's already made. I guess this month is special, but hopefully next month you'll actually make some new stuff. I heard your soundtracks, and I can't wait to hear more songs from you. ;)
----------------------------------------------------
I'll post up a new topic if I ever done with my new "The Last Memory", but until then, I think we should stop talking about that, after all it's in Archangel's topic. therefore, I apologize to you, Archangel, I posted it simply due to excitement when I learned your motivation for your piece.

Well, I don't see why it would be unfair, since other people might as well post old compositions not intentionally written for the CMA of this month. I know what you mean though, and I will compose new songs for the upcoming contests. (Also note that I can't compose new songs right now, since I don't have my computer yet.)
Sorry for the off-topics, Archangel, just wanted to make things clear. :)

i recorded my song on a friend's keyboard which had a floppy drive (lol, back to the wonderful floppys.... gotta love them). all that you hear is me playing. no, the concert did not record... it was merely a talent show to get money for my incentive program trips. the midi format is the only thing i got recorded for my song.
Darren, i haven't heard your song yet cause i'm on a computer with no speakers. i'll listen to it when i get back to my computer which does have speakers. don't worry about adding your song. lol. Excitement is good!
to the CMA. i've already entered this song before and have tied with Michael. If you haven't heard his compositions before, i suggest you do! I do not think I can enter my song since my song has already won.... i was wondering if we should have a post with just showing who won what month because i keep seeing a july or august post for CMA but i don't know who won. would the moderator please post the CMA winners?

The winners are posted in the "Ichigo's Awards" thread or something like that. (Announcements and Feedback)

Nice composition archangel! I wish I could compose like you do. Btw, how do you compose? Do you compose the melody first or the base part?

interesting, we have asked the same question.
Archangel
September 9th, 2004, 05:47 am
i actually play both melody and base at the same time... i just let my hands go wherever they want and what sounds good i take in memory... ^_^

September 9th, 2004, 06:01 am
Wow! You're really good. I find it easier to compose the melody first then apply the base later. How 'bout you darren?
Darren
September 9th, 2004, 07:47 pm
mmn, I actually use the mixture of both.
in other words, I compose the melody first, then add chords/bass on them. Then I will use the same chord progression and compose the variation of the theme on top of the chords.
but sometimes I will just do what Archangle does. ^_^

you can import the midi file into noteworthy composer or something and it will notate it for you. the only problem is that the notation is really choppy and gross-looking, so although i have the ability to get a crummy version of the song now, I'll wait for a good version of the song.

I like happy, intense stuff, ya know. I don't have all the full orchestra parts, but I jammed together a piano part for my first good composition (if you don't like it, Imagine what the others were like). The last part is my friends' idea. I will have others soon, like Saturday, so wait a while for better stuff.
Errr... There are some wierd things in it that sound like mistakes, but it really is like 4 of the same note overlapping. Yeah, I know it's simple, but hey. I just turned 13. Gimme a break. By the way. I play all instruments except double reeds, flute, and clarinet. Come see me if ya need help an stuff. THX!

Thx, archangel, I appreciate it! ^_^ I do have about 3 other ones that aren't really bad (I actually wrote the full orchestra part for "O joyous joy") but they're on another drive which I cannot get to right now.
As a response to your comment about the notes being too loud, I'm sorry about that. I was just so eager to post my song. See, my full orchestra and the good version are on the other drive. I just put together that song with the chords and stuff in about 10 minutes on Digital Orchestrator. I look forward to hearing your future compositions too! by the way, this is the music writing program. It's really good for scores and stuff, but you have to write two different tracks for a piano part. It also doesn't do 8va, or triplets, or grace notes. You have to write in yourself. have fun (for all you ppl dying to hear something you've composed, download it and write it in dig orc. it helps)

k, update to anyone whom has somewhat curiosity...
I have continued to write music. I've finished a christmas piece with a vocal in it. not the greatest. That piece was experimenting harmony. I am still finding new ideas, but it's all in my head... lol. I now have finale 2004 to use to write music. and yes, I would like my songs to be on a cd. but I need to write more songs in order to do that. I'm also checking out recording studio equipment such as recording programs: protools, cubass, Neuendo... Also looking at microphones to record both instruments and vocals, and also stereo equipment to of course listen to the songs, and a keyboard worth 1000 bucks. Either that, or my dream synthesizer MOTIF ES8 which is $4,000.
Thanks again to all of you for your support and comments!!! They are much appreciated and has helped me write more songs.
