seriously wat's the difference between soccer n football.

firstly i dont call it football because football can be associated wif rugby or soccer. So i use the term "soccer", not "football".

Footbal is the British (European) word, soccer is the American word. Americans always fuck things up so they call their rugby-with-armour football. Rugby is not football. American football isn't football either, you only use your feet for the kickoff and to run towards the other side of the field holding the ball in your hands.

thks for the detailed explanation and u are right to some extent.

rugby IS football in the british term in the dictionary. http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book...ary&va=football (http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book=Dictionary&va=football)

and in American football, you do not only use your feet to kick the ball during the kickoff and when you are running with the ball. You use your feet to kick the ball during punting too. In punting, the kicker drops the ball and kicks it before it touches the ground. By punting, a team can send the ball farther away from its own end zone before surrendering it, thus weakening the opponent's field position. and oh, u can score by KICKING the ball between the goalposts and over the crossbar too.

so u say that i shouldnt use their American term, soccer, because they keep on fucking things up?

*sigh* rugby isn't football, rugby is a different sport than football.

edit: that site does it completely opposite of what it's supposed to be, they say:

an American game played between two teams of 11 players each in which the ball is in possession of one side at a time and is advanced by running or passing

That's the British game, the Americans call that soccer.

Look, I'm not even going to argue with someone who can't use English correctly about something that's language related. You obviously don't know what the hell you're talking about, hell, you don't even know proper English.

okay, well then, let us conclude this little debate, shall we?

your point:
-American football isn't football either, you only use your feet for the kickoff and to run towards the other side of the field holding the ball in your hands.

my point:
-wrong. you know nuts about the American football.

your point:
-Rugby is not football
-rugby isn't football, rugby is a different sport than football.

my point:
-correct to some extent. Rugby is a different sport from football but you cannot deny the fact that it is stated so clearly in the dictionary that FOOTBALL=RUGBY. if you are still not convinced, go here http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book...ionary&va=rugby (http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book=Dictionary&va=rugby)
nuff said.

your point:
-edit: that site does it completely opposite of what it's supposed to be, they say: an American game played between two teams of 11 players each in which the ball is in possession of one side at a time and is advanced by running or passing

my point:
-I dont quite get you here. read the rest of the meanings. that is juz one of the many meanings of football.

your point:
-Footbal is the British (European) word, soccer is the American word
-the Americans call that soccer.

my point:
there you go. So was i ever wrong in using the word 'soccer'?

your point:
-Americans always fuck things up so they call their rugby-with-armour football.
-Look, I'm not even going to argue with someone who can't use English correctly about something that's language related. You obviously don't know what the hell you're talking about, hell, you don't even know proper English.

my point:
my my...such harsh words everywhere. you hurt my feelings there. I was just trying to reason out with you. you dont have to take it out on me. seriously....sheesh...

okay, let me say this once again.
i am in no wrong in using the term 'soccer' unless this forum forbids the use of american terms.

angelic, i respect you as an admin in this forum and the very least you can do is to respect the way i use my english. YOU ARE THE SECOND ADMIN IN THIS FORUM WHO SHOWED DISRESPECT FOR PEOPLE WHO CANT USE ENGLISH WELL. i apologised if you flare up just over such a simple issue. all i ever did was to try to see things straight.

enuff of this crap. this thread is dead. all thks to you, angelic. all i ever wanted was some casual interaction with the good people here but what happen? it is partly my fault too and i apologise to everyone who has to read all this nonsense. gd riddance!

I don't have any favourite soccer team, but I really like watching the big tournaments and cups. :)

does it really matter? Americans call american football "football" and the rest of the world calls football "american football". Americans call football soccer. It's just like English people call potato chips "crisps", and french fries "chips".

Noone ever gets mad over the chip/crisp/fries thing, so why get mad over football/soccer/american football? The english language is full of those type of nuances.

...

anyway, on topic... I followed and played soccer (football) when I lived in england... but that was 15 years ago so I can't remember much...
