I am currently learning the violin on my own and i really need help. I am trying to learn vibratos. The sound of my vibrato comes out normally, or at least i think, but my technique is kind of different. I kind of the little 'taps' on the string but very lightly so that the string doesn't come up entirely. But the video that i have watched showed me that my 'taping' was correct but the problem is that in the end, they move their hand. My hand doesn't really move. Is this normal. Do i have the technique completely wrong or is it alright?:(

Vibrato comes from rolling the finger on the string, not tapping. Tapping doesn't roll. That's why the arm or wrist has to move, so the fingers can move.

there are 2 ways of vibrato
either:
1) use your wrists and rock your hand back and forth, which will generate the rolling of the finger slightly up and down the fingerboard
2) use your entire arm but keep the wrist more or less stiffer than in method 1, same motion more or less, same effect

tapping is for trills, not vibrato

oh ok thx! ill try practicing that...umm how much time does it usually take?? like does a month of the exercise will make me able to do a normal vibrato?

You have to let your hand get pretty loose. Most likely, you're doing vibrato with your arm and a stiff wrist, but your wrist cannot be stiff. It will take a long time to get right, and over time if you try to stay open minded, you should be able to get it. Also, if you have some sort of instructor or teacher, ask them about it. If not, get a teacher soon. =p

I'd say do the fingers going back and forth on the strings, It probably will take about a week or longer to get it down, but that's how a good vibrato is formed :)
