Why would a guitar amplifier emit a loud humming sound whenever you touch your thumb to the tip of the phone plug?

Don't worry, nothings wrong, and its not your guitar that's causing that. The amp reads electric signals sent from the guitar through the cord, your body has electricity in it so the amp picks up that which is what causes the humming noise. This is completely normal for any sort of amp, so you have nothing to worry about, just don't go doing anything stupid like pressing the lead on different parts of your body to see if the sound changes:heh:
