Entry for Alice in Wonderland competition.
I'll begin with a biiiiiig sigh of relief of exhaustion, brain stress and overthinkage! I've encountered about a gazillion difficulties and gosh has it been hell to pass them.

Can you guess how manu mushrooms there are?

The initial idea was to show a scenery where Alice walks into a shamwowmazing scenery with stained glass butterflies, but then I realized using a daytime light with enhanced light effects is rather wonky, so I attempted something I'd never done before! A NIGHT SCENE 8D.

i hardly see any sailor moon style... i think you have incorporated more of your style than anything. i believe there is a lot of things to consider in your drawings... but maybe you could just submit a drawing or two so it'll be easier for me (maybe us) to tell you about what i think of your drawing(s).

if i may add... it seems as though you don't erase much... so in that sense i think i admire your skills. i think you're the type of person who make sure that each stroke has its purpose.

You are doing pretty well. But what I see is that you are not trying too hard for make a better work. It looks like if you dedicate more time to detail, fix and clean up your artworks, you will get a very nice final result.

...I agree with Nyu; maybe you should focus on one piece of art instead of uploading multiple (unfinished...?) sketches... however, they do look really nice :D

lolwut? He just posted like ten paintings in here that probably took at least three hours each. Compare that to your MS Paint drawings of ropes and random triangles, and I don't see where you could be pulling your advice from. =P

I don't know where Nyu is getting his advice either, since kelogs posted EIGHT paintings. Sure, there are sketches too, but sketching teaches you a hell of a lot. If we all just did nothing but finished paintings, it'd take us forever to learn anything. In my opinion, a lot of quick sketches beat a few finished paintings any day, anyway.

As for your paintings, kelogs, I'm not a huge fan of the coloring style. It looks a bit too photo-shoppy for my tastes. (Please, never touch the dodge and burn tools ever again. Adobe added them to Photoshop for the sole purpose of ruining your paintings.) If you want, download Open Canvas from portalgraphics.net, and download some event files. They're basically stroke-for-stroke playbacks of paintings from other artists, and they're very useful for learning how different people get different sorts of effects in their paintings. Good luck!

I simply saying that he can do better. I never mentioned sketches. He separated the painted ones from the sketches. And some of his paints have room for improvement.

Meh, I was only referring to the sketches; the paintings are too awesome for me to critique -_-

The one thing that I find you should feel better on (not drawing-related) is your self-confidence; your drawings are definitely better than many other "artists", so be less pessimistic and be more positive :)

Oh, did you mean how a few of his paintings were sketchier than his other ones? If that's what you meant, then he was probably just leaving well enough alone; the ones he left sketchy wouldn't have improved much at all from cleaning up the line art and stuff, and might have even ended up looking worse. That's the reason I'm guessing he left them "unfinished," anyway. I thought you were referring to his sketches, though, which is why I was confused. I was like "does Nyu expect him to do nothing but paintings?!" XD

Huh? It doesn't matter how good his drawings are compared to yours; you could be a hundred times better than him and I'd have said the same thing to you. You told him he should focus on showing us more finished pieces, when you've yet to show us one painting, hence my comment. All his sketches probably took him longer than the drawings in your thread took you, which is why I don't understand why you're telling him to take longer on his drawings. =P
And I'm probably the most unrealistically optimistic person you'll ever meet. I grade myself hard only because I expect a lot of myself. ;)

zomg! im so sorry ive been at camp for four days... DYING TO RETURN AND CHECK MY MESSAGES! indeed. very tired physically and mentally.

umm okay this is going to be hard to reply to. hrm... and i cant see which is criticism or constructive criticism D;

to Nyu;
thank you! for my coloured pics, i try put in hella lots of effort. if you could tell, i only started photoshopping about 2 months ago (and the only thing i can still ONLY do is New Layer, change color and brush size, thats about it).
the halloween picture was done with a mouse >.< i'm still trying to acquire a unique, effective and really good looking colouring technique, hence why they dont look like those superduper pro inspiring ones! :D
and for the sketches and 'coloured over sketches', they look crappy and bad detailed because i actually was never able to get hold of rubbers, for one i lost them constnatly or for two i had no $$ and for the last... dunno how many years, i've grown a habit of being 'rubberless' and now, i can only draw and leave it. they look realllllly sketchy because half of my sketches actually begin as nothign, as in 0 idea. the ideas come AS i draw, donno if thats common but yea.
P.S. those pencil sketches, they were done ONLY within 20-40 minutes of a period in art at school, hence why i was unable to place detail on.

to Mushy
i just... want to improve and become like one of those really pro artists before i do any major projects :( that halloween picture, i spent a week on that and it turned out horrible i_i -scarred for life- but i like doing small and short pieces, like the ones i've coloured other than the halloween one because it allows me to get used to everything and learn!
plus, if i spend too long on a piece, my mind becoems more focused and realises more. which means, if i begin to line my work and clean it up, i will constnatly be erasing this and that, then i look here and erase that, then i look there and erase that too and next thing you know my portrait looks like a bunny?

toHopelessComposer
im sorry for my crappy painting skillz sir!! but, i dont even know what dodge / burn tool is... i just change colors in the palette and paint... thats ALL i know how to do T_T
but dont worry! ILL LEARN AS FAST AS I CAN >=D

Holy crap...!

OK, first of all, STOP FEELING SO NEGATIVE. Your painting skills are not crappy at all; I don't know if pessimism is like, a fuel to help you continue drawing, but seriously, feel better for yourself...!

As I said, you are doing pretty well. For to be just 2 months with photoshop you showing you can do very well. But looking at many of the paintings it just makes me think that you can do better of what you are doing. You have potential to improve fast and give better result. That is what makes me think the paints.

Ah, alright then, that's great. That's what you should be doing. =D
Your color choices will improve with time; just analyze everything you look at and try to remember the way different things look under different lighting conditions. I thought you were using the dodge and burn tools right now because of the way you're currently coloring; it looks like when you want a brighter version of a color, you simply slide the value bar up, instead of changing the hue as well. Different colors look 'purer' at different values; yellow, for example, looks most yellow at a brighter value, while blue looks 'bluer' at darker values. When a color is closer to it's "natural" value, remember to make the color more saturated. When it gets farther away from its natural value, push the color more towards a gray. There are exceptions, obviously, but that should help a little for now...practice and observation are best, of course. =)

Also, always use the largest brush size you can; it'll make your drawings look cleaner.
And if I were you, I would stick with solid, TOTALLY OPAQUE brushes for now. It'll help you learn to choose your own colors faster, instead of relying on the program to blend the colors for you. Instead of saying "Oh, this red ball has blue light on it, so I'll paint a solid red ball and then airbrush some blue on top," you should be saying "a red ball with blue light shining on it has a grayish-purple tint to it, so I'll use a purple-gray color here." It'll look a lot better when you learn what colors to use, and you'll learn which colors to use in different situations a lot more quickly this way.

Good luck, yo!

oh cool! a free lesson! lol. but seriously... i learned... or at least i will try to understand it. but for now all i can do is memorize it.

sorry i don't have any constructive things to say about your painting since i don't really know about it... and especially because i don't know anything about photoshopping. but if i need to say something about it... i say your sketching skill and your painting skill is just about the same. for me... my sketching skill is colossal compare to my painting.

i think it'll be fun to watch what you.
