I've noticed that when I sequence a midi, I VERY MUCH prefer the sound quality of the midi when I play it in Quicktime as compared to WMP or Real... Why is this? I guess they just use different sound banks?

Anyone else notice this? :blink:

EDIT: Just realized this may not be the best place to post this, but the question was sparked by listening to my own compositions in different midi players... So hence I psoted the inquiry here... Sorry if it's the wrong place, mods/admins! ^_^

Well, it might use a different soundfont bank. I think there's a Microsoft default one, and the one your soundcard uses. Maybe Quicktime uses the Microsoft Default one.. :think:

I believe Quicktime has its own instrument set. MS uses one by Roland, so your MIDI's will sound like on a Roland Keyboard. I consider this one better than most sound card ones, even Creative (talking about the default sound banks here).

The MS Soundbank is easy to locate btw, it's a file called GM.DLS. I'm still looking for ways to replace this 4MB waveset with a bigger better one but I can't find much about it on the web. Recent Winamp Plugins allow loading custom DLS files for midi playback, aswell as advanced options for output if you use Directsound (like reverb) for playing midi files.

I use MIDI out to my Yamaha DGX200 and it sounds really good, especailly since it wasn't that expensive of a keyboard ($300 I think :think:)... but as far as SW synth, I think MS's Roland is good for some instruments, but the built-in SW synth on my AC'97 (built in card) is better for some others. I don't really like the Quicktime one.

I could use my Roland Keyboard :ph34r: but it would sound the same as the Microsoft wavetable ^^;
