View Full Version : Why write music?

I'm surprised that this hasn't come up sooner, but . . . why do we compose? What's your reason for writing music? I know some people would like to create songs for a living, but that's not what I mean. I'm talking about a deeper purpose. Like, is there a sense of achievement that you feel? We put ourselves through torture each time, so there has to be a good reason.

I started composing when I was little, right after I saw Amadeus. So at first I wanted to imitate my hero. But as I'm growing up, I'm discovering my own style and taste, and for now, I think I've realized that I write because it makes me (and mostly me) happy. Each song I find has its own difficulties that weren't present in the previous song, so I find it a nice challenge. And once I get it out of my system, I usually spend the next few days listening to it nonstop and just unwinding down. It's like it's taken a hold of me . . . and that's as best as I can explain it.

why?

a lot of people compose music to express how they feel...instead of using words...(unless its a song of course)

through music....it may help one to relax, make them happier even probably understand the composer's feelings when it is something they dont want to express verbally

you get stressed and find difficulties when composing...but when you have overcome that point....it simply means that youre one step ahead of achieving greater works...

personally....ive only really truely composed one.....(kind of a bad one too)....but that was really through an emotional phase...when i tried composing out of nothing....nothing is there to be written down

My style is not classical or baroque, but neo-classic and contemporary classic. They're maybe harder to compose, but I love to express my emotion and imagination than get strictly in "composition rules" of older styles.

Your composition is yourselves.

Copland says that it's just a natural thing, like eating. A composer gets up and thinks, "I want to compose."

I compose, because it's fun ;) I enjoy the songs I write and I like to play them.
They are relaxing when I play them and it makes you somewhat proud when you finish a song you worked very hard on ^_^

I compose because it makes me feel complete. It gives me a sense of achievement which is almost unmatched by anything else. :) It lets me make something valuable with my time, while most kids my age are skateboarding or playing video games, wasting time. I compose because after I'm gone it'll give people a glimpse to who I was, who I am, opening a window to the past that would otherwise be a forgotten, dusty picture in someone distant relative's attic... :)

Playing games isn't a waste of time.. It's pure entertainment, and so is composing. What you achieve of them is up to each person.

Anyway, I like what Alfonso de Sabio said. Now when I think of it, it is a good thing to compare with eating. ^_^

Without innovation, we'll be stuck in the the past...

Composing means the evolution of music.

as stated before, it is somthing natural. If we not make compositions, then where would inspiration start.

I compose because it lets others be able to play what I play. Sure, it's fun to just find the notes and just play it, but I want everyone to express what I feel through them. I love music and what's not better than making it yourself?

why write compositions? to wind down, to relax, to share a piece of ourselves to the world, to show feelings we had at the time, for entertainment, for achievement, for innovation, because it's a natural thing we do... all these points are great. why we write? simple: we all love music.
I don't do it to show off, i don't do it for money, i don't do it for popularity points, i don't do it to get someone to like me... i do it because i love music. when you put your heart, soul, mind, blood and sweat into a song, it is the greatest feeling anyone can experience... pure freedom.

Ya know, I never really thought about it... it gave me that feeling, like 'you've made a difference,' but then it became something more...
You know, 11:30, just another note, mom... just another bar, mom...
I don't really know. I love hearing what I do. My idols are the old composers. I LOVE NOBUO UEMATSU!!!!!!!!!! OMG!!!!!!! GLOMP! that's a good enough reason, isn't it? Ah well... I guess it's that i felt a failure at everything except music, and when I had the chance to excel, I did. I've been playing piano for almost 8 years, now... and I excelled, practiced constantly, played rondo alla turca until my parents closed the piano on my fingers (joke)... which also gave me the incentive to compose (gawd, i'm babbling). I like the consequences...
