View Full Version : What instrument do you play?

We all know that Ichigo's is a great place to find music and such, but what instrument do you guys play? It doesn't have to be common stuff like the piano. Anything is fine and you can list them out too. You don't need to include any description if you don't want to.

Let's see... I play the...

- Piano
- Flute (I'm at best with this instrument)
- Acoustic Guitar
- Alto Saxophone
- Tenor Saxophone

I think that's about it. :3

Well, to help keep the music section alive, and because I'm a fellow Ichigo'ian.

Lets see, I properly play (in the way of grading and exams, and are proficient in)

Flute
Alto Flute
Clarinet
Acoustic Guitar
Electric Guitar
Harp
Oboe

And the instruments I can play (but don't do exams or any form of grading or I'm not particularly proficient at. eg. not a high music level.........yet)

Contrabass Flute
Mandolin
Bouzouki
Bass Guitar
Violin
Banjo

I think that's it. Maybe..........

Whoa... That's a lot more instrument then I can handle! I couldn't remember all of those fingerings! I would've lost my mind to it! But it's cool playing these instruments, especially the harp and violin. I always wanted to play those, but never got the time to sit my butt down and at least learn the notes.

What the hell? All those instruments and no piano?

And for the thread: I play Piano, King of the Instruments! =D
In the future I'd like to pick up guitar, violin, ukulele, and some sort of wind instrument.

Awesome! Those are all great instruments you all are playing! I can only play concert instruments. Trying to get away from it besides the guitar and piano. I should really learn how to play the violin... It's quite true to stick to one instrument and master it. There should always be the main instrument and the supportive... I think.

Order of most (sort of) proficient to the least:
Classical Guitar (which I play like an acoustic)
Piano
Violin

I play the guitar the most (only for fun), sometimes jamming out with my friend who plays drums and singing when no one's home.

Piano, I took for three years, learned a few songs (for example Fur Elise, medium difficulty arrangement); it's not fun practicing it 'cause I only have a unweighted keyboard.

I faded in and out with the violin, even though it's my favorite instrument. I wish I owned one, helps to have the instrument to practice with ;)

I have to agree with you there. It's quite hard when you have a piano that's not real. The first piano I had was electronic, which didn't have enough keys on them. So then my parent had to get another one. It looked real, but it was still electronic. Man... I wanted to get a real piano, but my family doesn't have enough money for those.

It also reminds me that my tenor saxophone wasn't mine at all. It was my school's and I really want to own one, but all we have was a rented alto saxophone, which I stink at it.

acoustic guitar and its irritating becuas eno one on this site puts up tabs for guitar players

Taemond
May 27th, 2010, 08:30 am
What the hell? All those instruments and no piano?

:heh: I tried to learn to play piano, I could never press the keys down at a constant speed making some notes too long or short and I always went out of time. And yes that is different for something like harp you pluck the strings, not press a key (it didn't help me that some of the piano's had differently weightly keys <_<)

And salsalover, all you have to do is request tabs on the sheet music request section. I'm sure someone would be able to do it. Its just that tab is pretty much only used by guitarists and sheet music has more advantages.

animefans12
May 27th, 2010, 10:46 am
Well, it is true that the piano is quite difficult if you can't make the speed, and that's okay. I, myself, have trouble with that a couple of time. You just need to slow it down at first, learning the notes, then start speeding up the tempo. You should then now play at a normal speed with the music. (It takes me at least a week to do it smoothly. I can't sightread very well... Unless I practice it intensely)

I feel so inadequate.

I only play the piano, but I'm also pretty good at hand-percussion (like congas, tambourine, shakers, etc.) because I can keep a good beat in my head. I also sing. My parents and brother are all professional musicians, and my mom always told me that if I could accompany myself singing on the piano, I would never go hungry, no matter where in the world I was.

Even though I'm a receptionist now, I still think about, like, flying off to Japan or Sweden or something and playing in a hotel lobby. :D

Don't worry about that. If you just know one instrument, you could master it. I mean, some people can't play more than one instrument in my school, but they're especially at master level with the one instrument they have. Some of us just have the time to learn another instrument and enjoy it. (Like me, I don't really enjoy playing the guitar sometimes, but I do enjoy playing the piano and flute!)

The guitar is hard at first, don't worry. When I first started off, I did the same thing you did, mindlessly just strumming random chords and notes.

I've been playing piano for almost 8 or 9 years now. I used to play violin in elementary school, but I gave that up to focus on one instrument. I'm thinking about picking up bass and/or guitar soon.

Piano - 10 years
Violin - currently learning for 8-9 months, I started in 3rd grade, dropped it, and I've picked it up again.
Guitar - currently learning without a teacher >_< - 5-6 months

I've also played flute and recorder before, but those were like...epic fail, lolz. And I'm a percussionist in my school bands(bells, xylophone, chimes, etc.).

Yes, I can't forget the violins also. :3

Lanza de Relampago
June 3rd, 2010, 02:35 am
Yeah, violins sound the best, but are also one of the hardest to play. Guitars have chords and frets to play with, pianos have keys, flutes and other woodwinds have holes to mark, but violin is just a plain black or brown neck with 4 strings.
Sounds awsome when played though.

RainingSilver64
June 3rd, 2010, 02:42 am
Umm...violin isn't actually all that hard...to start playing anyways.
It takes a while to get used to holding it and the bow properly, but with a good tutor/teacher(private lessons) and some tape, getting the basics is easy.
>_< It's the harder techniques(and songs) that really start to kill you...

And it's not like all those other instruments you mentioned are easy...

Lanza de Relampago
June 3rd, 2010, 02:45 am
Well that may be, but the tape feels weird (in my case), and i cant really play with it a whole lot. The vibrato and harmonics really are easy for me though.
However, Saxaphone was simple to learn, but guitar has so many notes, i gave up to too much memorization.

RainingSilver64
June 3rd, 2010, 02:52 am
Lolz, what kind of tape did you use? I can't even feel the tape on my violin XD.

I would love to play a wind instrument(I've always wanted to play trumpet >_<), but after flute...well, I have sports asthma, so I have trouble holding out long notes on wind instruments.

I only started guitar a few months ago, but I agree, it does have a lot of notes. But playing single notes isn't the only method, and although I don't play by single notes, I'm sure there's some kind of pattern(like all other string instruments) that will save you time from having to memorize every single note(if that's really how you want to play it...).

Lanza de Relampago
June 3rd, 2010, 02:54 am
I dont bloody know, i just used some special tape they suggested, and i still didnt like it.
It's not just single notes, but also chords that make it alot.

RainingSilver64
June 3rd, 2010, 02:55 am
Lolz.

Yeah, there are a lot of chords too. That's all I pretty much know for now, seeing that I'm currently without a teacher. I can't play 99% of the songs I want to learn because I don't know the chords ><. Just goes to show how long I've been playing, lolz.

animefans12
June 3rd, 2010, 11:49 am
Don't worry. You guys should just learn by yourself. Even though you can't memorize them all, do it in little chunks. Nobody is going to kill you for learning little by little. That's how I learned my guitar. (Though I still have many other scales and chords to memorize... TT )

Ana72
June 3rd, 2010, 01:36 pm
I can play violin and guitar. Honestly, I am more interested with the guitar. Each time my brother plays it, I just watch while he is strumming. Since, guitar is a string instrument; it was already easy for me to apply my skills in playing violin. Ohh, my father was the one who bought the violin for me when I was in high school.

Is it true that the electric guitar is much easier than the acoustic? I'm playing the acoustic guitar right now if you're wondering. *Did I mention that on the thread? No? Guess I gotta change it*

M
June 14th, 2010, 06:46 pm
The easier part about the electric guitar is that the strings usually are a lot looser (less blisters), and the tone is usually distorted so bad strums turn out okay, sometimes.

The core difficulty (memorization) is still just as hard, and the electric guitar has it's own components of complications (focused mainly on modulators and amps).

Stop by Guitar Center or some local guitar store and check them out. Electric guitars have lower action than acoustic guitars. Choosing an electric guitar that's right for you is overwhelming, not to mention the amps and misc. stuff involved.

I play only the piano. I want to learn the electric guitar in the future as my 2nd instrument.

Solaphar

I'm surprised at the number of multi-instrumentalists here. In comparison, I only play four instruments, and all at a fairly mediocre level,
since I don't practice as much as I should (Severe lack of self-discipline, and also no one to kick my a** into doing it).

Piano, Electric Bass Guitar, Violin, and Classical Guitar (In the order that I started learning them).

Instruction: Had some piano lessons many many years ago as a kid. I had two lessons on bass guitar, last autumn, but didn't like the
teacher. Violin I picked up on my own. Classical guitar, I recently took a group class for it, and am planning on taking another one in a
couple/few weeks.

Besides the instruction listed above, rest is self taught. I'm planning on finding a violin teacher for at least a few lessons, just so I don't
teach myself improper technique. Since I don't play it all that much though, who knows when I'll get around to that.

The bass is what I practice the most these days, so I guess I'd call it my "main instrument".

animefans12
June 17th, 2010, 04:16 pm
Well, I teach myself how to play. I did take some piano lessons when I was young in New Jersey and moved to Florida, but quit doing it a year ago. First reason, I don't have any time. Second reason, the instructor basically doesn't teach me anything. It's more like I'm learning myself and wasting money, so I decided to teach myself. TT

But those are all great instruments to play. Some people just don't have the time to sit their butts down and practice a couple of scales, notes, songs, etc. ESPECIALLY playing another instrument. So it's great that you all can play while balancing the time of your own schedule. :3

I started off with the clarinet in 4th grade, learned cello in 5th (and subsequently was in both Orchestra and Band until Middle School, darn schedule conflicts )': ). In 9th grade, I picked up bari sax. In 10th, I learned flute for Marching Band, and a few months after that I learned piccolo.

Unfortunately I do not own a bari or cello anymore. ): I really wish I could buy instruments from my old school for cheap. Oh, well.

I am itching to get my hands on some sort of double-reed instrument (I would LOVE to learn the english horn eventually - it is my favorite). Oboes seem to be the cheapest, so I want one. And perhaps a new piccolo, too - marching band slaughtered mine.

ALSO, obscure instruments are the sexiest things ever, so I want to at least try any of the lower flutes (alto and bass probably), bass sax, contrabassoon, etc. etc. Bass clarinet, too, but that doesn't count as being obscure.

Everyone is very musically talented. I struggle to keep up with one instrument. I play the Acoustic and electric guitar. I am learning the electric bass and piano as well. Is keyboard and piano the same? I did get corrected before for saying a piano and keyboard were the same thing.

^Well, the keyboard's keys are just plastic and does not have the same weight of an acoustic piano's keys. A piano will require you to develop better techniques than a keyboard for perform.

Well... That's your opinion at least. I wouldn't state it as if it were a fact though... "better techniques" is very subjective language, in my opinion; Open to interpretation. Also, if key resistance is an issue, there are many electronic keyboards that have thoughtful and realistically weighted keys. Especially how resistance decreases as one goes higher pitch (as with an acoustic piano).

As for multi-instumentalism, I don't think there's anything wrong with it, however I think it may be better to focus on getting somewhat good at a single instrument before trying to branch out and learn more instruments, although this is debatable too, as mere exposure to a variety of instruments may possibly help one gain a broader understanding of instrument-playing techniques in general. As a specific example: Perhaps you might discover that techniques performable on one instrument, influence you to derive those techniques for application to another instrument. Furthermore, exposure might help in composition, especially in how the timbre and range of different instruments affects the overall sound palette. (Okay admittedly that last part sounded a little like I was talking out of my ***).

My point is this: There are upsides and downsides to multi-instrumentalism and to derived instruments, especially derived electronic instruments.

If you're good at playing electric guitar, it doesn't necessarily mean you'll be good at acoustic guitar.

Perhaps think of it this way: If you're skilled at piano, you're a good pianist. If you're skilled at keyboard, you're a good keyboardist. Is one better than the other though? I think that should be left to the player. Oh, and they are similar instruments, Gonzarelli, but I believe it would be a mistake to say that they are "the same".

Hopefully that makes sense.

You sir are a man of knowledge.
I appreciate the sentiment, but I was just expressing my opinion. =)

Just so long as you realize that techniques that work well on one instrument may not necessarily work as well when applied to a similar instrument. I think that may have been what nyu was getting at, despite my disagreeing with his exact choice of words.

Also, I hope that in what I said, you'll realize that while the piano and keyboard are not the same, there's no reason to look down upon either instrument. There are skilled players of both.

You sir, aren't
;P
I think humor is better when it doesn't come at another person's expense (at least not to their face like that). Just my opinion. =)

Anyway, maybe we should cut short this little side discussion so as not to get off-topic for too long.

I play the bassoon. Bassoon is actually my main instrument despite what my username says.

As far as proficiency goes trumpet would probably be second. It's what I played in high school and before. Clarinet would be third, it was my first woodwind. Piano would go somewhere in there, although I really am not proficient at it. Just enough to get through my Class Piano courses.

And actually the saxophone would be the one I'm least proficient on. Long story. I intend on changing that (for marching band). But bassoon will still be my main instrument. Forever.

Oboe d' Amour
Bassoon (I don't on a Contra yet... ;_;)

You're all pieces of work, huh. Such ranges of instruments. Did forum collaborations ever go through? Impressive, everyone - keep at it!

See, I only play the piano and only hit gr8 or so. Dabble in a few other small things: e-guitar, flute... played the clarinet when I was in the middle/high school band. But I'm not quite able to even touch most of these nowadays. School. Work. Etc. All of which are seemingly in the furthest possible field from music (sciences, bro). And I know I still have a long way to go with improving even my piano skills.

And !@#$% my small hand span. Takes so much extra effort.

I'm a singer for 7 years, I'm doing Master studies in singing in Belgium, I already give some beginner lessons and concerts, I'm semi-professionnal but I still have so many things to learn, it's a never ending path ! But one day, who knows ! ^^
With a pianist friend we used to have a little duet in which we played anime covers, but unfortunately we have to stop since he leaves now near Spain and me in Belgium ! So if there's a pianist near Liège let me know ! ;-)

^Haha. I know how you feel about wind instruments! Especially with the flute, it's a tiny too delicate. For my first flute, after having one marching band season with it, it was in a "okay" condition since it was rained on, smashed on, heated on, and freezed upon. :P So I now have two different flutes, one for marching and the other for concert (which has the B flat foot).

Edit: I looked them up! I've seen the theremin before (on The Big Bang Theory :P or something similar to the theremin, anyway! The waterphone looks really cool :) do you use a bow to play?)

I play the violin/guitar, only recently started learning the guitar, but having a blast =D

Having awesome fun playing/recording VGM as per usual hehe
It's good to see so many other ppl out there who play/enjoy VGM stuff
Hey, Chris | Amaterasu, I've seen you on OCR. Didn't even realize you were on this forum until I saw your YouTube channel just now in your sig.

You only started playing guitar recently? Could've fooled me. You sound great. Self-taught on it or taking any kind of lessons?

And the violin sounds great, as always.

P.S. Loved the Dark Theme intro cover, that's a regular tune in my winamp playlist.

Edit: Responding to the following post below, I'll send you a PM, so we can keep this thread on topic. =)

Hey Solaphar,

Had been lurking around here for a while, used to scavange for music sheets haha. I also used to lurk on ocremix too haha, whats your username there?

And also, thanks for your kind comments, gonna keep improving my playing and videos, and hope I can churn out some higher quality covers and remixes in the future =)
I started playing guitar August last year, gametabs.net was my teacher =D

Vivaldi: Concerto in F (AAARGH the scales...)
Rutter: Suite Antique (cheesy, but I love it really...)
Faure: Fantasie (Faure's a bit of a hero to me, and it's a fantastic piece. Learn it :P)
Debussy: Syrinx (I needed another piece, and it's really different to the rest of them, but still sounds lovely)
I use a bow. I don't like hitting it, because it's not as pretty, and I get scared that I'll hit it too hard... but I do occasionally. I really love the theremin...

Hahahah I'll have a look at the Faure then!
Syrinx, yay xD I love that piece :)

Ooh I see. Did you have to buy the bow separately? Could you use a regular violin bow? xD

Edit: Just looking up ^^ I saw that Solaphar continued the conversation in a pm to keep on topic, so I think I'll do the same xD

Hey umm I play the Violin mainly,
But I used to play the piano and guitar when I was 4 years old. Lol I still do but not as much as I do with the violin.
Btw I can't sing at all. I get jealous when I hear people sing lol

^LOL. I have the same reaction as you when someone sings. I just can't seem to sing well (probably cause I don't use my voice much anyway?) and whenever I try an attempt to sing, I get to shy and embarrassed anyway.

Wow, too much people playing more than one instrument
I play the violin
Maybe in some years more I'll start to play the piano, I wish
I can sing too. I don't know If I'm the best singer ever but I like to do it, even if a violinist can't sing and play at the same time xD

Piano, flute, and I'm getting lessons in learning the Lute. I've always wanted to play the lute, although, it's extremely hard to find music for it. :/

Have I already posted here??? Anyways, I used to play the guitar, but then I found the piano. I can't read sheet music, so I try to play by ear. I've made 4 songs on my piano (bit difficult because I can only record 5 songs, each with 5 parts you can record). I mainly started playing piano because I love classical music, and the one epic song, To Zanarkand

Oh, lots of multi-instrumentalists. I only play the concert harp these days (Started with a Celtic harp). I tried piano when I was younger, but it did not end well.

As for voice...Does singing my favorite anime OPs in the shower count?
