Are you trying to write that as a slur or as a phrase marker?

Sounds like you want a tie. Okay, I'll run with that!
So what you need to click is simple entry tool (eighth note on top bar), and then select the icon where two quarter notes are connected. Then select the first note, and it should draw the tie out for ya.

Are you talking about the beaming? How you see four groups of eighth notes in your first picture and two groups in your second?

If this is the case, press the letter "l" when selecting the third, 5th, and 7th eighth note in the bar.

:heh: Sorry, I told you the wrong one.
If you're using Finale Notepad, you can't do this - in any other one, click the tool with the treble clef. You'll see a "Staff" tab appear - click it. Then click "New Staves...". If it's not a treble clef staff, click the tool with the bass clef, then double-click on the first measure and change it to treble.

If you want an "8" above or below a clef, I think you have to have Printmusic, Allegro, or Finale - use the clef tool (click the bass clef tool at the top). Then double click at the measure at which you first want it to appear. Or if you want an "8va," click that one tool that is a right-curved line - you'll see the 8va. Then you click and drag.
(Note: None of these things work on Notepad.)

Look at my first post and click on it to zoom in you see how the first eight note is tied with the other one in the chord. Is this a slur or a phrase marker?

Yep, it's a type of slur; it's actually a tie. In Finale, you can't do this too easily - what you have to do is go to the first note, then press "t." Then what you do is you have to click on "Window" in the top menu and make sure the Specials Tool Palette is checked. Click on the tool that has three notes in a chord with ties in it - this is called the "Tie Tool." With this tool on, click on the tie, then go to the "SpecialTools" menu that appears - on "Tie Direction," click the one that you need (up or down). Then drag the tie so it hits the other chord. It doesn't play back that way, but it does notate it correctly.
