...Interesting thread. Maybe repost this into the "post a recording of yourself playing something" thread?

You're right. Technically, only music containing singing qualifies as a song, however, over time, people have corrupted the meaning to have it refer as a blanket term for a musical piece.

Also, I agree with Mushyrulez. That thread exists so people don't clutter the place up with their own individual threads. Perhaps next time the OP would be wise to look around more carefully prior to posting.

Exactly. But to be honest these people are 9 times out of 10 non-musicians. For a musician to use it is just ignorance. I don't mean to be a bitch or offend anyone but it really is a pet peeve of mine and on the majority of music forums you get worse responses than this for misuse of that word (Y)

I've made the mistake myself, in the past, and every once in a while I still slip up and make that mistake, which is why I tend not to get on people's case about (it would hypocritical of me).

Also, I think it's also a bit presumptuous to assume that all musicians should know that definition. Many musicians pick up the misuse of the term from non-musicians and simply perpetuate it. That said, I think it's more helpful (and educational) to explain the difference, than to simply declare that "These are not songs". I suppose it's my pet peeve when people assume that others possess certain knowledge, just because they think others should have that knowledge. The best prescription for ignorance is education, not criticism. Just my opinion.
