This sounds nice. You should consider nominating it for the web symphony in the future, maybe the third or fourth round (or whenever we happen to get more transcribers and arrangers).

It probably wouldn't be hard to arrange it to include brass, guitar and flute.

As for my favorite composer... well, I have a list of top composers, but my absolute favorite changes year-to-year, sometimes month to month. I suppose my current favorite is Satoru Kousaki. It's only as a result of one of my favorite songs being written by him. Don't get me wrong, I don't like all of his music. In fact, I downright dislike some of his compositions, but that's another issue for another thread.

Difficult to pinpoint exactly who is my favourite composer...here's a list of my top favourites:

Beethoven.
Rachmaninoff.
Liszt.
[Keith] Jarrett.
Zappa.
[Thijs] van Leer.
[Koji] Kondo.

EDIT:

How could I forget Bach and Debussy. >_>

Szymanowski and Takemitsu

Debussy, Ravel and Rachmaninoff

That's how I see them. The bottom three are by no means lesser composers and will always be in my favourite list. But Szymanowski and Takemitsu just completely overshadow them right now.

I am obsessed with a particular Szymanowski piece right now called Narcisse (Narcissus) from his Mythes for violin and piano: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=klgcNXqygR4

Do some of you know the Japanese composer "Ryuuichi Sakamoto" ? I've become somewhat of a fan of his lately, and I really like his experimental approach to music.

yes I know Sakamoto.

I love Japanese classical/contemporary/traditional music. The history behind it is really interesting too; even now the Japanese have a very delicate balance between their own music and Western ideas. They do not think of their mainstream music such as the bands and anime composers you could all name more of than I could as Japanese. In my Japanese classes a few years ago people were talking about their favourite music from anime and my teacher turned around and said pssh that's not Japanese it's American.

Yoshihiro Kanno is one composer I have interest to explorer from a while. But there is not much of him in the internet sadly. I have liked a lot what I have heard from him. He also composed the music for Angel's Egg. Very pleasant and enjoyable music.

Boom. Now if only American's can get that kind of attitude about things. Geesh I hate this country's "culture."

Very well, actually. My favorite pieces by him are perhaps Energy Flow, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, and Thousand Knives. I really like his harmonies. For some reason, though, seventh chords and extensions just sound better to me than using only triads (no, I don't search for seventh chords - it's just something I've noticed once I've gotten the score). There's a technique that I noticed in Energy Flow that I've used all the time when I compose.

i get a lump in my throat every time I hear anything by Ralph Vaughan - Williams - so serene, so reminiscent of England .

I still don't have too much experience with non-"mainstream" composers, but I love what I love.

Debussy - Recently discovered more of him in Music Theory IV. I now love Impressionism, especially after this piece (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3geejD5Dksk) stuck out to me. It's just very atmospheric, can't think of any music that is quite like it or effects me as much. Reverie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0CLYpYKHNY) is great, too.

Mozart - Yes, very well known. But he made great music. Recently I've been into his Oboe Concerto, especially this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGlZXU2Iz-o) movement.

Vivaldi - It's not just his Four Seasons that I like, but I think that the Largo movement (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLa0-tPQydI) of Spring is just too beautiful. And of course all of Summer is amazing.

Handel - The Andante movement (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kl9_WB8kRcg) (or one of them, I'm not too familiar with the whole work) of his Water Music really actually got me into Classical and Baroque music. Also the bassoon. The recording I linked to is actually the one I first heard and loved. There are two styles it's typically played in, this is my favorite. I also like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uYOP9cgu34U) piece. Although looking back on it I haven't explored much of Handel's work. I need to change that.

Bach - His Toccatas and Fugues are pretty awesome. There's a particular part in his Toccata in E Major (early in it) that is just epic, but I can't find a recording similar to mine. =(

Ravel - These two pieces are the ones I like the most from what I've heard of him: Le Tombeau de Couperain - Menuet Movement (http://www.youtube.com/watch#%21v=J4lz8ylKS6c) and Introduction & Allegro for Harp, Clarinet & String Quartet (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8aB6EALonk).

I need to expand my horizons. Making this post helped me realize that.

^ I would *highly* recommend Ravel's Daphnis et Chloé if you haven't heard it yet. Beautiful orchestration.

My favorites:

Ravel - for his Daphnis et Chloé, Le Tombeau de Couperin, Ma Mere l'Oye, and his piano stuff. Love it. :)

Bach - Chorales, especially St. John Passion.

Stravinsky - ballet scores, esp. Firebird and Rite of Spring, along with Petrushka - and Pulcinella.

Vaughan Williams - Oboe Concerto, Lark Ascending

Yeah, I'm pretty crazy about Bach. Crazy. About. Bach.

Seriously, that dude blows my freaking mind. His pieces for cello, violin, piano (or his Baroque equivalent), organ, or voice are all amazing. I actually just wrote an essay about my Bach love-fest. Also, this is a poem about how much of a music crush I have on Bach:

"Soli Deo Gloria"

I was thundering away on the elliptical machine
early Tuesday morning
when St Matthew's Passion flooded through my headphones.
Hilary Hahn moved my legs, the Baritone and orchestra
with the elegant jerk of her violin bow.

I was bursting with that ecstatic remorse
which drove Judas to his sorry end.
"Gebt mir meinen Jesum wieder!"
I screamed in syncopation with him
(My accenting the two thousand year off beat)
running in place to my own treasury.

Then I thought of the musician himself--
Johann.
I pulled up a chair to his desk,
slipped into his pantaloons,
put on his wig.

His quill in my hand, I kissed the parchment
with unfathomable counterpoint.
I wrote like a Fury,
summoning sound ex nihilo
and encoding it in ink.

I reached the end and paused.
Here was an Oratorio in two parts
that so excelled any natural sound.
Show me a song-bird
whose song matches mine!

I was far too pleased with myself
to acknowledge any Greater Creator.
This cantata could fill any canyon,
eclipse heavenly light itself.
(Such are my excesses and hubris.)

But I am not Bach.
His pen traced the last note,
and with humility more striking
than his polyphony, he wrote:
S.D.G.

Sooo I haven't actually been exposed to that many composers. But even so, Chopin is definitely my favorite. There's something about his music that just sounds very....polished? It's hard to explain but so far other composers I've played haven't had as much of an effect. When it comes to more modern composers there was a little while that I was OBSESSED with Dario Marianelli. I feel like my obsession with pride and prejudice in general might have had an impact on that though.....haha

john williams is an instant favorite for me, any of his music i love, and all of his soundtracks he's written are unique and different. my favorite by him would be the star wars music. i grew up watching the original trilogy, and have turned in to something of a geek for it. the classic main theme i can play by heart on trumpet, and every time i hear the imperial march i get chills. that's rare for me to get chills from music. but he painted the music well onto the canvas that was my childhood. oh nostalgia, how i love thee.

My course focuses on post 1900 music and how this composer did this to be different and another did something else to be different and boxes being thought outside of and lines being crossed etc.

Not once has Rachmaninoff came up and to be honest I have gained a lot more respect for him because of this. He made it for himself writing the music that suited himself, even if it wasn't astoundingly different to anything you'd find in earlier periods. Music would have suffered a great loss had Rachmaninoff jumped on some bandwagon like everyone else.

Joe Hisaishi (Princess Mononoke), Koji Kondo(Zelda), Hiroki Kikuta/Kenji Ito(Secret of Mana/Legend of Mana), Yasunori Mitsuda(Chrono Trigger), and Nobuo Uematsu(Final Fantasy) and Frederic Chopin(Revolutionary Etude) are the ones who've influenced me the most.

I would recommend the one I mentioned previously here. Not someone very well know around here.
