I'm just curious how many transcribers we have here on Ichigos. Some of us remain, others have left; life moves on. Also post how long you have been transcribing and what education you have (ie. middle school, high school, college, etc.)

This club are only for those who are capable of transcribing by ear. Anyone can post, but to join, you'd have to demonstrate/prove you can transcribe by ear. No midi-ripping arrangements or plagiarism of others.

As for me, I've started transcribing since summer 2006. I'm currently an undergrad college student. That means... I don't have time for this stuff  Well 2 more years of hard grueling work.

I've been transcribing since 2006. I have had experience with MIDI import (as some probably know), but nowadays, I've decided to diverge from that and just transcribe by ear whenever I want to experiment with reharmonization of a piece or if someone just wants a sheet (i.e. I really don't have as much time as I used to). I am an undergrad college student who will start a BM-Clarinet Performance and Mathematics and will probably go for the second degree as a BS-Mathematics as soon as I graduate with the BM (stupid school policies).

I've been on here for a while looking for clarinet music, but I didn't really start doing any transcribing until a year ago. I'm a sophomore in high school, so I have time. Most of the stuff on my site I do by ear, and I prefer doing it by ear because I find it easier and less time consuming than by midi. (And there's more satisfaction when you've finished a piece). However, because it was summer and I had lots of time, I recently have done a few stuff from midis.

Sincerely,
Sango

Just you two? Hmm I know there's Porsche, Nyu, Josh, Lelangir, Gotank, and SpiritSoul at the back of my head. Wow there's so few. Most of us transcribers are college students, and most of the people making requests are high school students (at least that's what I believe). It would be nice if we have new people transcribing for others, especially high school students. College is taking a toll on us, and we need more transcribers!

I've not posted here because i'm starting transcribing, but since few people does....
I'm a university student and i play piano. I can transcribe by ear, but for the proof, it will come when i'll finish the transciption of the kiss x sis OVA op. (Indeed, i think nobody has a try to transcribe it and it is not possible to do by midi-ripping arrangement).
Furthermore, my passion for the music is recent, and as i'm at university, i think study the musicology^^

Well, I'll be here for a while, as college is 3 years away for me. Glad that I can help!

P.S. Am I the youngest person on this site that is actively taking requests?

I don't think many people have noticed this thread!

I transcribe o/

Ive done a couple of pieces for ichigos, but the stuff i do mainly is usually the times when i hear a piano piece i like in a film or something, but i cant find any sheet music for it. Thats when i get off my ass as it were, and figure it out myself.

Seems like it:D

It isn't even limited to Ichigos, but I've noticed this trend from other forums as well. Majority of us who can do this by ear are college students. I'm still scratching my head over this. Why is it so? Are today's teen generation spoiled? :heh: Imagine if all the college students were to stop transcribing for others. The teens would be helpless!

I'm a teen, I've /attempted/ ta transcribe?

Good enough :V

Transcribing [can be] a time-consuming process, depending on how well one wants the end-product to turn out, so that might be part of the reason.

Another reason might be that younger people's interests, as a whole, are shifting. To what? I don't know. But it seems it's not anime sheet music. heh

Also, maybe the demand just isn't strong enough. If the demand were to gets higher, then I people would rise to meet the challenge.

This is all just speculation from me though. I really don't know the actual reason.

I dunno...I don't see the appeal in, say, just playing over the melody in a random anisong with your instrument. Wanna play Fuwa Fuwa time on alto sax? That's cool but...it just doesn't seem gratifying to me. I transcribe to learn theory and comp. techniques. Actually playing the music is pretty secondary to me, since so much anisong stuff is very mechanic in that regard. I think that, when it's not wholly computer-based music, it's just studio musicians churning out tune after tune. And because most of it is computer-based, the essence of the composition is what appeals to me, not how it's performed.

I'm an undergrad senior. I started transcribing at least four years ago, but only two years ago started this whole anisong business.

Could be because the younger ones haven't chanced upon online sheet music/got into this type of music. I started soon after discovering sheets were available online at all. I first heard a midi and thought, "?? Did they actually play and record this?" (Yes, I know midis are completely mechanical. That was the source of my doubt as to its recording. The concept of "transcribing" was completely, wholly foreign to me.)

I only do this once in a blue moon now, and visit these forums even less, oops. It was in fact the other way around for me and I had loads more time when I was in middle/high school, after I stopped lessons and then discovered this genre of music. (I loathe scales and practicing. My scale practicing was literally limited to during my lessons.) Presently a uni undergrad now so I fit right in with you guys? Hahah. Pushing like a decade but my ear is terrible.

I like to hear from other transcribers too; it helps to improve my own attempts. And non-music student here - I'm in the sciences.

Here's a nice transcribing-related video I found. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHhXQu3knco) Make sure to read the video description below it.

Even though he focuses on guitar, what he says can be applied to any instrument as he notes in the description below the video: "This short tutorial gives a quick demonstration of the some of its features that can be very useful when trying to figure out how to play a song on guitar (or any instrument for that matter)."

Some things he doesn't mention in the video (but which I personally often use) are high and low pass filters.

I also sometimes do frequency analysis, like, if there a sliding/bending pitch somewhere and I want to faithfully recreate it, then I'll take measured portions of the slide, one at a time, and figure out what pitches it's hitting at that certain point in time, during the slide, and make a note of the frequencies, so that I can convert those freqs into wheel bends later. It's also useful if you're not sure whether a certain note is being played. This feature will give you a probabilistic estimation of the frequency span (it's not perfect or exact, just think of it in terms of probabilities). And that feature has a bunch of settings to mess with too. Hanning window, Bartlett window, etc.

At the very least, that video can help people who are considering taking the leap into transcribing to get started.

Wow! I have been doing it completely by ear with the original track only. This helps out tons!

Haha! Talk about a time-saver.

Here's a guide we wrote http://forums.ichigos.com/showthread.php?t=14654. Each of us have different ways of transcribing. I use Adobe Audition, but you can use Audacity as well.

People who are new to transcribing, the first thing they'll do on their first attempt is listen to it as a whole, say "that's complicated", throw their hands in the air and say I give up. When transcribing do not let the song overwhelm you; in other words do not take it in as a whole. Rather, break it down into pieces and focus on only the parts you need. In the guide I also said to use headphones, not speakers. If you've been using speakers, transcribing off of youtube, then it's going to be very frustrating no doubt.

Hope that helps anyone trying out.

I use audacity 'cause you can listen to say just .05 seconds of music to listen to a single note. But I'm getting in a non-efficient habit of transcribing little tiny bit by little tiny bit, whereas I wanna get in the habit of listening and remembering entire, say, 4-8 bars phrases. That would speed things up.

Oh wow, I did not see this. Amazing... I didn't know that most of you guys were college students. I just started my senior year in high school. I always thought the majority of transcribing was done by high school kids. I know quite a few people that are much more talented on the piano than me. Sango Uchiha seems to be the youngest here. It's good to know that we have talented young people. (Lol look at me talking like an old man.) Even though I just started in the summer I might be slowed to release new material, since im not very fast at transcribing and because i haven't started college apps.
If anyone is interested, I use a program called Transcribe! made by Seventh String. It's a really good and fairly accurate, once you figure out which notes to ignore it can REALLY be a big help in transcribing especially when I come across a particularly hard section. It gives chord names and notes. Sometimes i feel like I'm just plotting the notes it tells me to.
I'm curious to know does everyone here use Finale? What programs do you use?

I use Noteflight. It's okay and you have a limited number of scores that you can use, but it serves its purpose.

P.S. Just Sango is fine :D

Sango, are you really Japanese?

also I did a piece but its not exactly up to standards, I'm really swamped with thing till after November. So if anyone would like to fix it up for me you can message me. The Piece is called Love theme, from the anime Innocent Venus.

I transcribe using a computer and my piano xD. I listen to the mp3, and play notes. I usually break it down by arranging left and right hand separately.

No, I'm not Japanese. I'm from America. Actually, my username evolved from an inside joke.

Just curious, what exactly is the reason for this club?

I've done my share of transcriptions. Been doing it for a couple years, since spring of 2008. I'm a recent Uni grad. I'm actually not very experienced, musically. I took old-fashioned lessons for 6 years, I performed in a recital only once, and I never took any music courses in school.

I've used midis when they are available for some songs. But I also go by ear. It's easier most of the time. I like to use Audacity, and I sometimes use Adobe Soundbooth. I also like to use the Widisoft programs, usually to get me started or when I'm stuck.
